YOUNG DROPS BOMBS IN NATS WIN

Chris Young couldn't hit a lick in Queens.  Suddenly he's a New York Yankee and things are like he was playing with the Diamondbacks again.  You gotta wonder what's in the water in Citi Field.

As MLB.com has it:

"The Yankees outfielder belted his first two homers of the spring, starting with a solo homer to lead off the fifth inning against Fister to tie the game at 4. Young went deep again in the sixth inning, hammering a line drive down the left-field line off right-hander Casey Janssen for a two-run homer that gave the Yankees a 6-4 advantage."

That's nice to see, and not only that, the guy we here at Bleeding Yankee Blue really want to see lead, Brian McCann... homered as well.  We love this guy... and with Derek Jeter no longer in pinstripes, many of us believe it will be McCann who will lead this club.

Bryan Mitchell started for the Yankees today. His appearance was made up of 3 1/3 innings and he only allowed 2 runs.  Not too bad considering the Yankees scored 6 today.

Overall, a good showing and it seems like every day there is a new star of the game. Oh... and yes, Spring Training means nothing, but what we are seeing are players really getting comfy right now... and that's a good thing.

Final: Nationals 7- Yankees 6

BYB HOT STOVE: VOLUME II

With all the big name free agent pitchers out there, the Yankees seemed to have taken a serious interest in Detroit Tigers' ace Max Scherzer.  According to Jon Heyman and the Yes Network, if there is one free agent pitcher the Yankees are seriously considering it is Scherzer.  For one he is the youngest of the trio of James Shields and Jon Lester at age 30 and he has an impeccable post season record.  Shields nor Lester have a Cy Young Award like Scherzer.  I for one have always liked Scherzer and I say if we are going to lay out some cash, let's go for him!

Word on the street is that the Yankees will "test the waters" with Alex Rodriguez at first base. According to Buster Olney, Mark Teixeira did not make the list of best first basemen.  This is exciting news because perhaps now Chase Headley will be our starting third basemen, a place where he has excelled and showed a lot of talent and grit last season.  After the All Star Break, Headley raised his batting average more than 40 points.  Not only that, but he made the defensive plays of a Graig Nettles and Mike Schmidt.  We need him.  Sign, please!

Russell Martin is off to Toronto but guess who may be on the next plane?  The Blue Jays are on a spending spree again and this time they have their eye on Jon Lester.  "Toronto is one of the six teams in the market for southpaw Jon Lester,WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford reports." The Jays are also interested in Red Sox Andrew Miller who wants a four-year deal.  He could be their next closer as their current closer, Casey Janssen is likely on his way out.

According to ESPN, multiple teams are interested in Cardinals' Justin Masterson.  Among these teams are the Chicago Cubs.  Joe Maddon, the Cubs new manager, will be a good match for Masterson, but he will have to get in line next to or behind other contenders like the Giants, Braves, Twins and Red Sox.  The Yankees seem to not be interested.

And according to SNY, the Cubs are contenders for James Shields and possibly Cole Hamels for guys like Tommy La Stella and Starlin Castro and possibly "top shortstop prospects Addison Russell and Javier Baez, leading to speculating that they will eventually make a trade to acquire a starting pitcher."  The Mets could get into the mix too.  Stay tuned on this one.

HOW THE YANKEES STACK UP: THE CLOSER

We have looked at every position in the American League East and how the Yankees stack up, check out:
Now, we bring you The Closer... it just so happens the Yankees have the best one in baseball. Since 1997 the New York Yankees have had an undisputed leg up not only on the AL East, but on the rest of Major League Baseball in who comes into a game to close it out.

Mariano Rivera is the greatest reliever who ever played the game of baseball, and he is a Yankee. When “Enter  Sandman” echoes throughout The House that Jeter Built, there is no doubt as to what the near future holds for Yankees opponents.  Simply put, the game is over.

Until last season’s mishap while shagging fly balls on the warning track before an April game against Kansas City, Mariano Rivera had 15 consecutive seasons of 28 or more saves as the Yankees closer.  During that span, he saved less than 30 games once, and his ERA was a sparkling 2.02.

Even more impressive are Rivera’s post season statistics.  They read:  96 games, 42 saves and an eye-popping 0.70 ERA in 141 innings pitched. There is nobody better.

Now the certain first-ballot Hall of Famer is coming off a major injury for the first time in his career, and by all accounts he has been up to the challenge.  As Erik Boland reported in Newsday HERE, Rivera has stunned even teammates with his recovery, and has accelerated his spring schedule.  He is claiming that everything feels good and is hungry for competition.

That is great news if you are a Yankees fan. There is no reason to doubt that Mariano Rivera at age 43 will be any different than he has been for the better part of the last two decades.  His consistent, high-level of production on the mound is the rudder that guides the Yankees ship.

Look for a return to 40-plus saves and an ERA less than 2.00 for the Yankee great. That’s my prediction.
Here is how the rest of the AL East stacks up at closer:

Toronto Blue Jays:  Casey Janssen posted 22 saves in 25 attempts for the Blue Jays in 2012.  His ERA was 2.54 – not impressive for a closer – but his WHIP was a sparkling 0.86.  The 31 year-old should get more save opportunities with Toronto’s re-vamped lineup.

Baltimore Orioles: 29 year-old Jim Johnson had a MLB leading 51 saves in 54 opportunities last season with the Orioles.  Even though he isn’t the typical strikeout pitcher that other closers are (he had 41 strikeouts in 68.2 innings pitched), he held opposing batters to a .220 average and posted a 1.02 WHIP.

Tampa Bay Rays:  The Rays’ Fernando Rodney was second in MLB in saves last season with 48 in 50 attempts.  He held opponents to a .167 batting average and posted a microscopic 0.78 WHIP and incredible 0.60 ERA.  In addition, he struck out 76 in 74.2 innings pitched and yielded just two home runs all season.  The 36 year-old will again cover the backside of what is the best pitching staff in the AL East.

Boston Red Sox: Joel Hanrahan was an intimidating presence for the Pittsburgh Pirates over the past two seasons in accumulating 76 saves in 84 save opportunites for the Bucs.  He held opposing batters to a .187 average and struck out 67 in 59.2 innings last year.  However, his ERA of 2.72 ranked him 142nd in relievers and he’ll need to improve upon that to live up to the billing with his new team.

Here’s how I think it breaks down:

Yankees: There is no doubt that Mo’ is back and the Yankees are a better team because of it.

Tampa Bay: The Rays Fernando Rodney will continue to sparkle in the closers role.

Baltimore: Jim Johnson finds ways to get batters out when he needs to and this improving team will keep getting him more save opportunities.

Toronto: Casey Janssen should see more save opportunities thanks to a new look to the Blue Jays lineup and pitching staff.  The question will be whether or not the relievers before him can hold onto the lead.

Boston: How will Hanrahan’s 2.72 ERA translate to the American League?  His jump in ERA and walks from 2011 to 2012 is worrisome.

Let us know what you think?  How do you rate the AL East closers?

WHY CANO EMERGES AS YANKEE HERO

(Photo: Getty)
Years from now, when I'm an old man and my grand kids ask me about the legends of the New York Yankees, Robinson Cano's name will be among those names. I've never seen a sweeter swing in baseball and he does it with such ease, you really have to credit his father Jose Cano for some hard work with his son since he was a kid. Cano won the game for the Yankees yesterday...again. How about that?

With 2 outs in the 7th inning and Casey Janssen now on the mound in place of Ricky Romero, Cano was on a mission. What was that mission? drilling 2 runs. His double was a beautiful shot that went to the center field wall allowing Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez to score. Next came up Nick Swisher, who's been on fire would nailed a single.(Photo: Getty)
We've all stated how important the conversation of Curtis Granderson is in the MVP discussion these days, but no one should forget Robinson Cano. He's now batting .307, has 23 homers and 101 RBI's. Curtis Graderson, who's done everything right this year, is batting .273, has 38 home runs and 107 RBIs. 2 big time players, both Yankees and plenty of discussion.Bartolo Colon does not look durable any more, he looked tired. Cause for concern? I'd say so. Yesterday he allowed 4 runs on 7 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings. Boone Logan was the guy who got the win in this one, not Colon. David Robertson was in yesterday as well and did not let up a run. What can you say about DRob, he is quickly emerging as a true Yankee stopper.

Final Score: Yankees 6 - Blue Jays 4

I love my Yankees right now. how about you?
