Oswald Peraza has poured everything he has into his time with the Yankees, especially this spring. Yet, since 2022, he’s never truly been given a clear path within the organization even though he's been exceptional. As I’ve mentioned time and time again, I’ve always felt that the Yankees handed Anthony Volpe the keys to the kingdom before he had fully earned them. Now, don’t get me wrong—Volpe is the Yankees’ shortstop, and that’s fine. But in my view, Peraza has always been the stronger defender.
Now, as spring training winds down, the Yankees are facing some tough decisions. And right now, Oswald Peraza is at a career crossroads. The harsh reality? The Yankees might not have much choice but to designate him for assignment. Jacob Mountz of FanSided recently pointed out that Peraza is “in danger” of being DFA’d. But let’s be honest—that’s not breaking news. It’s just the reality of the situation.
"Once considered a future star, Peraza is in danger of being DFA’d in the coming weeks. While the Yankees will clearly want to keep one of their most promising prospects in recent history, their hands appear to be tied. Peraza is out of minor-league options.
"He will need to make the Major League roster out of spring training to avoid being designated. This spring, Peraza has struggled, posting a meager .194 batting average. And without hitting a single dinger thus far, it seems his once-lauded power potential is no longer a viable threat."
At the end of the day, the Yankees need to make the smart move. This organization often focuses too much on the present without considering the long-term picture. The right decision would be to keep Peraza on the active roster, utilizing his defense and bat to give other players a day off when needed—or better yet, slot him in at third base. The way they operate, something will happen after they DFA him (if they do) and then they'll be scrambling.
Now, when it comes to the 3rd base race, Oswaldo Cabrera might be ahead of him in the pecking order, but Cabrera fits the mold of a perfect utility player in my opinion.
So what I say is this; Give Peraza the third base job, keep Cabrera in a flexible role, and let these young guys prove themselves.
That’s my stance, and I’m sticking to it.
