I personally never saw Juan Soto as more than just a competitor during his time with the Yankees. While it was exciting to have him in the Bronx, I wouldn’t necessarily call him a great teammate. Of course, I’m only observing from the outside, but this offseason made it clear to me that Soto is primarily focused on himself. That said, his former Yankee teammates have handled things with professionalism, avoiding any negative remarks, which I respect.
One thing I did enjoy was hearing from Luke Weaver and Carlos Rodón about Soto. Weaver, in particular, shared his thoughts on February 11 when discussing Soto’s move to the Mets.
"I'm just happy for him and his career. I'm happy that he was able to get what he felt was the best value for himself. Obviously, hate to see him go," Weaver said, per SNY. "I thought he was a great guy, a great teammate. And he'll continue to show that over there. We'll just battle it out on the field now and keep it friendly off the field. But for now, he's a friendly enemy, but in the box, he's going to be the enemy."
Rodón also weighed in on facing Soto moving forward, acknowledging the challenge. "I don't know, he kind of hits everything," Rodón said with a smile. "He's a tough out. So it will be fun."
Gotta love Weaver’s competitive spirit—and Rodón’s honesty. It’s going to be interesting to see how things play out when they face each other on the field.
