And the Yankees don't seem to have a shot.
Well, folks, if you were holding out hope that Roki Sasaki, the dazzling 23-year-old Japanese pitching sensation, would don a San Francisco Giants uniform, we’ve got some news for you—and it’s not great if you’re a Giants fan. Giants general manager Zack Minasian confirmed on Monday that Sasaki won’t be heading to the Bay Area. So, scratch them off the list!
But there is more; Mets, Yankees, Giants, Rangers, and Cubs are reportedly out too.
It’s a rough day for us Yankees fans if true. Will Sammon at The Athletic reported Monday that the Mets were out, and then Jack Curry of YES Network delivered the blow that the Yankees have been informed they're out on Sasaki too.
Ronald Blum of the Associated Press confirmed that both the Yankees and Rangers are out of the running and so where does that leave Sasaki? The Dodgers, Padres, and Blue Jays appear to be the finalists to sign the Japanese right-hander according to reports. Sasaki has to sign by January 23. It's tough to see the Yankees miss out, especially with the competition heating up.
The Dodgers have long been seen as a frontrunner—because, well, they’re the Dodgers, and they love collecting star players. And the Padres are making serious noise in their pursuit of Sasaki too.
Stay tuned as the Sasaki saga continues to unfold, and maybe next time, we’ll have a bit more to chew on. Until then, keep dreaming about where this young phenom will land!
