The baseball commentators and sports pundits had great aspirations for this team early on. And why not. After an incredible May that had them at 21-7, you think to yourself, this team is cruising. But of course, we all know it is a long season. We are in fact seasoned fans and we don't need Aaron Boone telling us it is a long season and how hard it is. We seriously don't. After that abysmal loss on Monday night to a team that literally has only won just a few more games than the Yankees entire May, I wonder, are the Yankees even championship material?
"Nobody would call the Yankees an unstoppable force, but they certainly ran into an immovable object on Monday night. The result? Helping the White Sox in their quest to avoid infamy," reported The New Post on Tuesday morning. I had to turn the game off. And I know, it's a win one, lose one kind thing. Anyone can be great for a day. You can't win every game. But this loss was avoidable. And in the mix of this absolute mess, the Yankees lost a key player who was simply playing his heart out.
"Jazz Chisholm is staring down a stint on the injured list.The Yankees infielder is likely headed to the IL with an ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury after injuring himself during Tuesday’s blowout loss to the White Sox, manager Aaron Boone told reporters Wednesday. The team is now trying to determine the severity and if he will need surgery or not, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reported."
The Yankees need to look at a record like the White Sox have this season at 29-91 and try to cruise because as we are regularly reminded this is a long season. But instead, they have to fire on all cylinders and in the process, lose players to injury. Ridiculous.
The Yankees come into the series tied as the best team in baseball. But honestly, it is hard to see that when they leave runners in scoring position like that's their job. Bases loaded, pop out. Bases loaded, pop out on repeat. That was the protocol on Monday. And I realize, again it's one game. But every game counts. Just like the hit series The Bear touts with its "Every second counts" mantra.
I guess Mr. Cop Out said it best, “Every time you lose is a missed opportunity — we’re playing for a lot every freakin’ day,” manager Aaron Boone said. “So it sucks to lose. Really good, exhilarating when you win. But either way, you turn the page. The bottom line is credit to them — everything they hit tonight was a hit. I thought we played hard. … We just couldn’t punch through, we didn’t hit the ball out of the ballpark and we couldn’t stop them," reported The Post.
The tomorrow's another day might be a modern day of coping. I say, take every opportunity to be great because tomorrow is not a guarantee. So, do I think the Yankees have what it takes to go all the way? No. I don't. But I don't have an ego. Prove me wrong. How's that for motivation? Better than that coping mechanism.
