This Red Sox-Yankees Series is electric. Truly speaking—for the Yankees to be playing this well without being at full strength is nothing short of amazing, almost surreal. The Yankees and the San Francisco Giants have the best records in baseball since the All Star Game. And there are a number of reasons why the Yankees are on the uptick despite the injuries. One of them is momentum and the other is performances like we saw Tuesday afternoon from Yankee go to guy, Jonathan Loaisiga.
If you missed it, "Loaisiga navigated out of that bases-loaded, no-out jam, inducing a flyout and striking out the next two hitters to seal the Yankees’ 5-3, seven-inning victory over the Red Sox in the first game of a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium," reported MLB.com. The energy, the confidence made me feel like Ron Guidry was on the mound. Yes, I said it and I mean it.
"We’ve played more than our share of really close ones,” said manager Aaron Boone. “The good thing is, I think our guys are really comfortable in those situations, whatever the outcome may be. 'Lo' was great; he didn’t flinch. You could just see his confidence out there, like, ‘I’ve got this,'" reported MLB.com. The YES Network appropriately tweeted, "Nerves of Steal!" regarding the tremendous save by the Yankee reliever.
There is most definitely something special about "Jonny Lasagna." He is so crisp and precise with his pitches and I love his focus and confidence most of all. He has been stepping up all season but this 6-out save on Tuesday's first of two wins has to be his finest work yet. “We’ve seen it all year from him,” said Boone. “We’ve put him in huge situations all year and have leaned on him heavily. We’ve been waiting to see this guy for the last couple of years, and to see him develop into this kind of pitcher has been exciting, but I’m not surprised anymore,” MLB.com.
It is terrific that the Yankees are doing so well, but equally exciting is the performance of Jonathan Loaisiga. And as the days of summer chip away into fall, the Yankees in are in perfect position to keep their plans for the postseason alive. Let's sweep up the Red Sox tonight and keep the winning streak going.
