Wow! What a great series against the Blue Jays!
All these games have felt like the playoffs and that game on Tuesday night was nothing short of exciting, that’s for sure. The Yanks were down, 1-0, down 2-1, up 3-2, down 4-3, and up 7-4 before closing it out on a spectacular play by Brett Gardner to secure the 7-6 victory. Joe Girardi has called every game a must win and he is right. Tuesday night’s game was inches from disaster but turned out to be a huge win.
Based on Brett Gardner’s reaction along after making that play the other night, you could tell how big of a win it was! That obviously helped the Yankees keep their momentum and win against last night. Huge!
One thing many of us Yankees fans are noticing… it's been fun! Fun for the players and the fans, for the vets and the youngsters. That kind of excitement has been missing in the Bronx over the past few seasons.
Youngsters are performing. Guys like Tyler Austin is coming up big at the right moment after a slow start. Starlin Castro helped us big last night. And even guys like Dellin Betances who has taken over the closer role has done well. Although, after throwing 40 pitches the other night, he had to be removed. But you know what? That's baseball and a solid team will pick each other up. That's what the Yankees are doing, folks!
Here’s a fun fact; Up until May 3rd, the Yankees were 9-17. Since then they are 64-48. If you take away that first month and change, the Yankees have played pretty darn good baseball. Since August first, they are 21-13. That has mostly been with playing a younger lineup, with some younger arms in the rotation.
With 24 games to go, the Yankees are sitting just 4.5 games out of the AL East lead and 2.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot. Is that a lot to overcome? Sure, it won’t be easy with the Blue Jays and Red Sox in our division, but the Yankees play 15 games against those three teams, plus seven against the Rays to close out the season.
Needless to say, the Yankees hold their own fate. If they beat their AL East rivals enough, they can secure themselves a trip to the postseason. If not, they go home with some youngsters who will have gained some great experience down the stretch.
Can a September miracle happen? We just swept the Toronto Blue Jays. What do you think?
