TAKING THE WIN & APPRECIATING DAVID PHELPS
Mother Nature shortened the game, and to be honest, once again, the Yankees could not give David Phelps the proper run support he needed. Yu Darvish was on the hill for the Rangers, but you know what? Between a combination of a balk from Darvish and a jack from Brett Gardner, we got the win in right before the rain delay. I'll take what I can get.
Phelps went 5 innings, gave up 5 hits and 1 run. He looked confident. He looked like a New York Yankee veteran. IHe's falling in BYB's good graces quickly here. He's carried the Yankees on his back in his last 4 starts and has proved, at least to me and Suzie Pinstripe, that he needs to be a Yankees starter. Confidence is key, and Phelps has it. Read out terrific interview with Phelps: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: DAVID PHELPS.
I mentioned the Yankees run scoring. Here's exactly how it happened:
In the bottom of the 3rd, with Gardy at bat and Francisco Cervelli on 3rd, Darvish balked. Cisco scored.
Then a few pitches later, Gardy laced one.
Then came the rain...
Final: Yankees 2 - Rangers 1
