Apparently Johnny Damon is ready to continue playing. Here's the problem, no one wants him.
There's a good bit in the Tampa Bay Times about Damon and his willingness to play for absolutely anyone, or even manage, but on the major league level ONLY. Oh yeah right... you even have demands now, dude?
Marc Tompkin writes:
"Johnny Damon turned 40 in November and (apart from the WBC)
hasn't played since August 2012, but he said he's not necessarily done,
open to playing or managing, but only in the majors."
I have a theory about Johnny, besides him being old (and by old I mean younger than me); I think he's ticked off many with him talking out of both sides of his mouth.
Look, Johnny had a tendency to get easily offended if a team doesn't re-sign him, or takes shots at players or clubs when he's taken money from a new one. He did it when he came over the the Yankees from the Red Sox and I remember it well. Here's that quote from 2005 from MLB.com: "We know George Steinbrenner's reputation. He always wants to have the best players and I think he showed that tonight... I made contact with them and told [Francona] they really need to get
going because if not, I'm going to be on another team... I'm not sure if they knew I
meant it, but now I'm a Yankee..."
Then, he pulled the same crap in 2012 when he called the Yankees efforts to NOT work out a deal with him "unfortunate".
He blabs alot and while I appreciate anyone who had enough confidence in himself to still do the job, Damon sometimes comes off as arrogant. Plus, consider this Johnny, maybe the clubs are going in a different direction, like younger. Or, maybe they'd be more inclined to sign you if you wanted a minor league deal... you know, start over.
Now, truth be told, I like him as a person, but personally, who the hell does he think he is demanding ONLY a Major League baseball job as player or manager? I find the whole thing hilarious.
Anyway... it's Monday, I thought I'd fill you in on the Johnny Damon saga... or lack there of.
It's over Johnny... It's over! And there's Rambo... or Johnny Damon, trying to still keep it going...
God Bless him.
