I'm a big fan of watching new Yankees show off their numbers and say a few words to the fan base. There's an energy and excitement about it. Despite my anger toward the entire Robinson Cano incident, he will be missed, but that being said, I was happy to see Jacoby Ellbsury introduced today, sporting his #22 and saying some kind words to the organization and to us fans. Reading the Boston Globe piece, I found his quotes refreshing:
"I’m proud to be a New York Yankee... From the get go, the Yankees showed a great interest and showed that
they really wanted me... I always enjoyed playing here, I love the tradition, the fans, it will be nice having
them on my side now, but it’s just a great place to be, [I’m] honored
to be here, and I’m excited.”
I noticed the way he said how the Yankees showed "great interest" in him and I thought about Cano and how he felt being shafted by the Yankees. I wondered if Cano was onto something. Is it possible that the Yankees just assumed Cano would come back and just threw all their energy into free agent Ellsbury? Who really knows at this point, and I'm sorry that I'm raining on Jacoby's parade, but it did cross my mind.
There was more that Ellsbury said today. ESPN had some great quotes too:
"Now I'm looking forward to the next seven to eight years of my career. Hopefully we can be holding that trophy....I talk a lot about the tradition, the great players that play here,
the commitment to winning...That's important ... and [so
is] just going out there and having a good time. The guys that have
played here told me, 'You're going to love playing here,' and the chance
to win championships...Their commitment to winning, that's what really excites me."
I'm happy for Jacoby. I feel like the guy was overpaid, but that's my opinion and life goes on. But I liked the way he handled the whole situation since the signing. He even took an Ad out Thanking the Boston fans.
That's class. But now, he turns the page. He's ours now and it's really exciting for Yankeeland who hasn't had a "big time" free agent in a while.
Welcome Jacoby and Kelsey... #22 is a good number and I'm sure you'll handle the Bronx just fine!
Good Luck.
