HARD LOSS IN THE BRONX

Ivan Nova has been phenomenal this season. We have seen a real resurgence to his pitching. So there was no reason to think that last night, in one of the most important games of this home stand, he would crumble.

Granted, he still had excellent command of his pitches. The Red Sox just were able to hit against him. So much so, that Nova threw 48 pitches in the top of the 3rd inning alone. Jacoby Ellsbury, and Shane Victorino both had RBI's that inning. Robinson Cano hit a 2 RBI double in the bottom half, but that would be all from the Yankees until the 7th.

The Yankees made a rally in the 7th coming back from a 7 - 2 deficit. Brett Gardner got things started with a line drive that brought Ichiro Suzuki home. At the end of the inning, the Yankees were up 8 - 7.

The 9th inning gave us Mariano Rivera, and much to our chagrin, his sixth blow save of the season. With 2 outs, pinch runner Quintin Berry scored on a single. The bottom of the 9th would go on without the Yankees scoring, and we had free baseball.

In the 10th, Joba Chamberlain came in. Now, I won't defend Joba. He struggled this season. However, a critical error by Umpire Joe West, gave Victorino the opportunity to single, and bring Ellsbury in to score. Seriously, West, that call should have been strike three. You know it, Joba knows it, Victorino knows it, and all of Yankees nation knows it. You got to get those calls right in these critical, make or break moments. Joba would be ejected by West for making it clear that he knew it was a blown call.

Well, there is no crying in baseball. I should note that I even tweeted to Joba, offering him brownies if he pitched a successful inning. Maybe next time, Joba?

Final Red Sox 9 - Yankees 8

We come back and win today.
