WELL, WELL, WELLS

When it comes to Vernon Wells, Bleeding Yankee Blue believes... and we have since this slump started for him.  Today, it was clear that Wells has worked though some stuff and is hopefully now back and out of his slump.  Look, no one is saying that he's about to go on a .500 batting average tear or anything.  We are suggesting that confidence rules and anytime you get a 3-run double when it counts...let's just say you're flying high. Wells is and every Yankee in that clubhouse felt great for Vernon today because they all saw the poor guy struggling.

But let's start with how everything happened.  I went to the stadium today with my son.  To be honest, I wasn't even sure we could fit it in, because he had a tournament game this afternoon and the plan was to go to the Bronx, have a nice lunch, see a few innings, meet a few people and exit "before the traffic" as Phil Rizzuto would say.  It worked out like clockwork.

My son and I got in, ate and sat in our seats.  After 2 innings, we ate again... because that's what you do now at the new Yankee Stadium.  You're able to walk around, grab an ice cream and keep walking and all the while you can watch the game. it's Glorious.  At one point I texted our Bleeding Yankee Blue writer, Steve Skinner and we met up for literally a moment.  It was great to finally put the face to the name.

The Tom Selleck look alike (Not Magnum P.I. Selleck, Mr. Baseball Selleck) was with his lovely daughter and after we rapped a few minutes, my son and I had to jet.  Luckily, before we left, we saw the new kid, Zoilo Almonte crank in 2 runs.  This kid brings energy and hopefully that energy will be contagious as we move forward.  Bringing the kids up, finding the right formula is never easy, but Almonte fits in nicely right now.

Today, this is how things went down. CC Sabathia went 7 innings, allowed 6 hits and 5 runs.  The big blow for him was giving up an Evan Longoria home run and a Grand Slam later.  Once the Yankees were able to secure the lead with the Wells 3 run double though, it was David Robertson and Mariano Rivera coming in and shutting the Rays down. For Mo, it was his 26th save of the season.  Pretty damn great if you ask me.

Let me map out the hitting for you. After Longoria's shot in the second, The Yankees Zoilo Almonte knocked in 2 to make it 2-1 like I said earlier.  Then, in the 5th with the bases loaded, Almonte was walked in.  Then the wheels appeared to fall off... Wil Myers hit a grand slam.  That would be considered Sabathia's big mistake of the game.  Could he recover?  Well, well, Wells... that's when this happened.

With David Adams, Lyle Overbay and Zoilo Almonte on, Chris Stewart was called back for a Vernon Wells pinch hit.  That hit was ruled a double because of fan interference and 3 runs scored to put the Yankees ahead.  Then, like I stated... DRob, then Mo... then go home, Yankees win!

Final: Yankees 7 - Rays 5.

So what did we learn today? We learned quite a bit.  The Yankees have energy again and it was a win like this that was how they played all of April. Clawing back, fighting back and working together.  Zoilo Almonte was on base all day! Vernon Wells just woke up! Meeting one of my favorite writer's in person makes me realize just how far BYB has come and that there are real good people out there.  I also learned that you never leave a Yankee game!  Unfortunately (or fortunately) life got in the way today... and that's OK with me.  But one thing's for sure tough... the Yankees DO have life, they DO have energy... and hopefully that carries over the next several months... because I loved every minute of today's big win!

Go Yanks!
