Grand Kids was founded in 2007 as a way to improve education, art programs, and baseball programs for inner city youth. Every year, the foundation donates school supplies and baseball equipment is schools nation wide.
Granderson is kind of the "good guy" of baseball. It's hard not to like him. He is an MLB Ambassador. His 2009 book "All You Can Be: Dream it, Draw it, Believe it" was illustrated by fourth graders from New York City Public Schools. He represented the MLB in 2010 at the White House, to be a part of Michelle Obama's "Let's Move," the childhood anti-obesity program.
I'm a huge fan of Granderson's charity. I grew up in the inner city, and I have children who are growing up here. I know how difficult is it to get a decent education from public schools, with their outdated text books. The cost of private or Catholic schools is astronomical. Lots of parents can barely afford to put their child in an organized sport, forget paying the cost of equipment. It's a real problem since education, the arts and sports are such a vital part of a child's character development. Grand Kids gives children, the opportunity to take part in and experience these things. And that's huge!
It's common knowledge that The Boss, George Steinbrenner, was big on giving to charity. It's refreshing to see that it didn't stop with him. Granderson is only one of many Yankees that have charity foundations. From the manager, Joe Girardi, to the CC Sabathia, the Yankees are doing their part to make the world a little better.
