HERE COMES THAT CLIFF LEE RUMOR AGAIN

So yeah, the other day I went out on a limb and suggested that Curtis Granderson is coming back soon, and that’s a good thing. But you have to wonder what happens at the trade deadline if the Yankees are doing well with Brett Gardner, Vernon Wells and Ichiro in the outfield and with Granderson back as well.  Do we or should we trade Grandy? Just a question, I might have an answer.  One of our writers asked that question in ARE GRANDERSON'S DAYS IN PINSTRIPES NUMBERED? as well... read it, it was popular yesterday! Way to go Suzie.

Look, this is what we know; We know Granderson is a good outfielder with home run power.  He’s also in the last year of his contract.  In theory, the Yankees like Brett Gardner and continually push this guy to play center field.  We also already have Vernon Wells for 2 years as well as Ichiro Suzuki. Sure, the “old” question keeps popping up with them, but I call it experience, they’re doing well.  That would leave Granderson as possibly the odd man out, at least in my head.  He’s a guy who’s trade value is high and someone the Yankees can get someone for, possibly a pitcher, to take them through the playoffs.  Bottom line, if the Yankees are going on the cheap anyway, keep what we have right now this season and move the dude nearing the end of his career in the Bronx. Make sense? To me it does. While I don’t love the idea, it’s business and it makes sense and this is just simple thinking here.

Now, We’ve been down this Cliff Lee road before and I hate to even think about going through it again, but what if? What if the Phillies aren’t where they want to be by the trade deadline and are looking to unload some guys?  Granderson would in fact be an upgrade to what the Phillies currently have in their outfield and we, the mighty Yankees could use a guy like Lee to catapult us down the stretch. Now, we’ve heard the stories, “Lee hates New York, his wife hates New York. Yankee Fans spit on Lee’s wife"... it goes on an on.

To be honest, while some knucklehead fans, and there were only a few, were accused of this verbal abuse, know this...the Bronx would also embrace Lee if the Yankees made a move like this.  Would Lee come? Would the Phillies be opened to a deal like this? I don’t know the answer, but there is no doubt that the timing could be right and even if Lee didn’t want to come to New York, he would at least want to come to a competitor, plus he’d be with his bud, CC Sabathia... only for a short time.  Alittle reunion? Alittle playoff run? Hey, maybe I’m just forcing a square peg into a round hole here, but I believe that if the stars align and the timing is right, Grandy for Lee could be in the cards.
