OK, say what you will about Joe Girardi, his over managing and his over
tinkering. Yesterday in Detroit he showed me something. Joe Girardi truly gives a
crap about this team.
I was able to catch 5 minutes of the Yankee game yesterday. It was the 5
minutes that the fly ball apparently fell into foul territory and Raul Ibanez came in and had to the go after the ball because it turned out to be fair.
The ump called the ball play right around the time Raul was running
after the ball but there seemed to be a delay and it wasn't caught on
camera but Girardi had then run out and argued the the ump's hands were up indicating it
was a foul or dead ball. He was fuming and eventually bounced but
Michael Kay mentioned that Girardi had said he'd protest the game during that arguement.
Now look, I'm not sure how Girardi saw the play or what the angle was but he
obviously saw it differently and the Umps. The umpries in fairness gave Girardi alittle more time than normal to argue
because clearly they realized they messed up. But I told my buddy right
then and there, "If I'm Joe, I'm bringing my team off the field."
Sure, looking back now, with the Yankees winning, that would have been a stupid idea.
That's why I realized that Joe's no dummy.
He got booted, got his team
motivated and in the end, he was smart enough to NOT make a knee jerk
move like I would have made. He didn't take his guys off the field. Instead
he realized there was a lot more ball to be played and he was merely
giving his team a chance to win. He believed in his team, something that
I've been having a hard time doing the past several days.
But that's what makes him the manager and me the fan and blogger. I have
the luxury to make boneheaded decisions and not getting crucified if I do. My thoughts become opinion, his could put the team in jeopardy...he's smarter than you think guys.
So yeah, rip on Joe all you want, but yesterday's screaming
match was not only a passion play by Joe, it was also strategic. It
won't be presented that way in the straight press, but it was. He
deserves more credit than he gets sometimes. Joe's actually done a
pretty decent job.
Bottom line, the Yankees have now split that series
with Detroit and are no doubt looking for 3 in a row...and you know what
that means, right? 3 straight wins is a streak.
Go get'um Joe...go get'um.
