YANKEE CHRONICLES: JOBA, NUNEZ, GARDY & CHRIS DICKERSON

Joba Chamberlain: Joba could be back in August.  That is literally a few weeks away.  The latest on Joba is that he threw a scoreless inning for the Gulf Coast Yankees.  The Associated Press is reporting that Joba touched 98 mph on the gun.  You want to talk about determination and a want and a need to get back the the Yankees big team? Look at Joba.  Now there is talk that he may pitch for the Tampa Yankees on Friday in his next step... read HERE. So far this summer, Joba has pitched 4 scoreless innings and struck out 6.  Impressive...I'm ready for some Joba, how about you?

Eduardo Nunez: Nunez played 3 innings this week.  It was the first real action  he has had since that thumb injury back in May.  That's crazy to think about because the whole plan was this guy to get him more field practice in the infield so he can be a better defender.  He will officially join the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees in a week if he has no setbacks or further injuries.  I am telling you... this guy is not in the Yankees future plans.  I know Cashman has stated that Nunez is a shortstop, but I predict this guy will eventually fall by the waste side, or be transformed into an outfielder (read WHY NOT MAKES NUNEZ AN OUTFIELDER?)  By the way, there is a great piece that I just noticed for the first time by Howard Magdel in Capital New York echoing similar thoughts to BYB.  Read it HERE.  In a nutshell, Howard says of Nunez: "The problem with Nunez is that his defense is fairly awful everywhere. One of the motivations for moving him to the outfield was how poor his defense was at shortstop, his primary position through the minor leagues. And even at shortstop, an O.P.S.+ of 86 isn't really okay unless his glove is strong.

Cashman obviously knows this, which means either he believes Nunez can further develop defensively, eventually allowing him to take over for Derek Jeter whenever the Yankee captain is ready to step aside, or alternatively, that Nunez simply doesn't fir into the Yankees' plans. The latter is far more likely.

It is a sobering reminder that the Yankees really don't have anyone in line to succeed Jeter, whenever he leaves the scene."

Brett Gardner: The report on Brett Gardner's MRI results should have been released Wednesday, but we don't have the results yet, so I would expect it today and when we have it, we will post it here on Bleeding Yankee Blue.  It's a real shame what happened to Gardner this season, but the Yankees are doing fine with the other guys and I'm just happy they're winning. I will say this, when the season changes and the Yankees are in the playoffs and the season is 5 games or 7 games...speed will be a factor...hopefully this guy gets back.  We shall see. Chris Dickerson: We here at Bleeding Yankee Blue believed for quite a while that Chris Dickerson was the guy the Yankees should have called up to fill the void of Brett Gardner.  Read CHRIS DICKERSON IS THE SOLUTION TO AN ABSENT BRETT GARDNER. It appears that suddenly though, the platoon of DeWayne Wise, Andruw Jones and Raul Ibanez is working.  If that combination continues to do well, I will clearly be proved wrong...and I'm OK with that, I like to be wrong when it comes to my Yankees, especially if they succeed with the moves they made.
