In 1941 Joe DiMaggio hit safely in 56 games (HERE.) His streak ended with 91
hits, 15 homers and 55 RBI’s. He had a .408 batting average during the
hitting streak. It is a record he still holds today. With Robinson Cano hitting safely in 22 games (Read HERE), there is some talk over whether or not the
record will ever be broken and if an MVP award could be in his future.
I have to be honest here; Cano is my favorite current player in the
majors. He is an incredible second baseman having a .990 fielding
percentage already this season. In fact you guys voted for him on BYB, read ROBINSON CANO IS YOUR FAVORITE YANKEE SECOND BASEMAN. With the exception of 2005 and 2008, he
has hit over .300 every season. Before the hitting streak started, he
was batting .295. He is now at .320. His batting stance and swing are
possibly the smoothest I have seen.
With Robbie playing the
way he has been playing, it is easy to see how he would make a great MVP
candidate. Honestly, I think he was robbed of the MVP award in 2010.
When you compare his stats from 2010 and this season so far, he is
easily having a better season this year. Robbie’s talent seems
effortless. Joe Girardi said “him hitting in 20 straight games doesn’t
really surprise me.” I can’t see how anyone would be surprised. Robbie
is easily one of the best players in the league right now.
Now, I am not going to compare DiMaggio and Robbie. I feel like DiMaggio
is easily one of baseballs greatest legends and the game is different
now then it was then. To compare them would be unfair to both players.
But, if there is anyone in the major leagues that can break the record,
it is Robbie. Of course, I realize that there are a lot of things that
factor into this. He could easily go 0 for 3 and on his fourth at bat
they walk him or any variation of things can happen. But he is very much
capable of breaking DiMaggio’s record.
Robbie’s streak is
currently the longest in the majors. It is also the longest since Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez hit safely in 20 and 23 respectively in 2007.
This is Robbie’s career high game hitting streak. There is no telling
how long Robbie’s streak will last but it is exciting to watch.
