YANKEES SIGN 1ST BASEMAN RUSSELL BRANYAN
So the New York Yankees continue to add some potential bench players for the upcoming season. According to the New York Post's Dan Martin, the Yanks signed first baseman Russell Branyan to a minor league deal and a spring training invite.
Although Branyan's a powerful left handed hitter this should not affect the Yankees interest in signing Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, or Raul Ibanez. If Branyan begins the 2012 season on the Yankees roster he will add some pop off the bench and give Tex the occasional day off. Casey brought up Branyan's name in a piece he wrote about two months ago, WHY THE YANKEE BENCH WILL BE A FACTOR.
Branyan had 146 plate appearances last season with both the Diamondbacks and the Angels but has been in the Majors since 1998, playing in both the AL and NL. For a career, Branyan has 194 HR's and 467 RBI. Branyan's best year was just a few years ago in 2009 where he hit .251, had 31 HR's, and knocked in 76.
