There is plenty of reaction about the Jesus Montero for Michael Pineda trade since it happened. Plenty of people have plenty of opinion about it. It's truly an interesting debate and both sides of the US or A are fired up. Seattle is more angry than happy it seems and the Yankee fans that were finally content with the possibility of Jesus Montero becoming a beast in East will have to settle with him being a, well, Beast in Seattle. Seeing him with MARINERS written across his chest just doesn't seem right, does it?
There have been plenty of comments about the whole thing, but 2 comments I found to be thoughtful and interesting and I wanted to feature them this morning. One comes from someone who didn't want to leave a name or even a nickname for that matter... that's fine, but the comment was a good one, so here it goes:"From a Mariners fan reporting from Seattle, we are all scratching our heads and are ANGRY after we found out about this trade. None of us doubt that Montero is a great player, but we got the pleasure of watching the BEAST Pineda was last year and saw what a bright dominant future he will have. Pineda is literally a right handed CC. Both are 6'7" and throw 97-98 mph. Not only that but Jose Campos was one of our prized pitching prospects. The Mariners are desperate for offense after a few anemic years, but Yankee fan, you should be excited because if you ask any Mariners fan, if they had a choice to reverse this trade and keep Pineda, 100% would say yes. Michael Pineda, you will be missed!!"
You can't tell me that wasn't emotionally driven. This is clearly a die hard Mariners fan that is crushed by the thought that one of their toughest pitchers was shipped to the Yankees. I'm human first and a fan second and I feel this person's pain. It would kill me if this happened to us. Sure, Jesus Montero had the potential to be the future leader of the New York Yankees, like Derek Jeter and Willie Randolph and Yogi Berra before him, but Brian Cashman needed to be strategic this off-season. We needed pitching. He needed to get the bloodhounds off his scent and make a move that he thought would better the Yankees... and he didn't want the media or other teams getting a whiff of what he was doing. He was successful on that front. No one saw this coming and that's the brilliant part of it, but now Pineda needs to pitch like everyone expects him to do in the Bronx, and everyone knows, that's a different animal here. If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere. They don't say that about Seattle... you know what I mean? The second one comes from tedsfrozenhead. Another terrific comment on Pineda:
"Pineda was great at Safeco, but not sure if Yankee Stadium is going to hold all those deep fly balls he relies on when he is not blowing people away with his stuff. Look for his road stats to be more indicative of how he will play as a Yankee."
What can I say? It's a smart assessment and something we should think about. Safeco is a big field, Yankee Stadium has a short right field porch. What will happen? We'll have to see. Larry Rothschild is the best at this type of stuff, so hopefully he can harness that. Yoda Rothschild at his best I suppose.
Look, this trade has been the talk of New York for the past 36 hours. It's nuts. Everyone has an opinion, we have several. I wrote WHY MONTERO FOR PINEDA WILL PROVE GENIUS and this morning we just released WHY I HAVE MIXED EMOTIONS REGARDING MONTERO FOR PINEDA. Plus, there will before as we move forward. We appreciate you reading us and commenting. Our writers love to write for you, and this story is huge, different thoughts and different opinions, but ultimately, I almost feel like for both teams, it's a win win.
So enjoy the weekends.., keep talking about this trade...comment, tell us what you all are thinking.
Oh, and pray the Giants win today! GO BLUE!
