YANKEE RUMORS & BYB: PART 18

Kyle Drabek: Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun has a report that suggests that the Yankees are interested in Drabek. Read about it HERE. I like this kid but he suddenly had control problems and it seems to be a mystery. The Yankees are clearly looking at every pitcher they can before they make a determination on who to go for and I just hope they aren’t running out of time. Drabek can get back if Larry Rothschild was to work with him, I firmly believe that, but what I really am not too keen on is another project. We already have Phil Hughes and AJ Burnett and to a lesser extent Ivan Nova. I just want a pitcher that will eat innings and chuck it in like a sling shot. Drabek may be a cheap alternative, and he will bloom in the minors if that's where the Yankees were to start him, but I’m not so sure it’s the best option. If Drabek didn’t have the control problems he does now, we wouldn’t be having this conversation…I’d go for it.

Matt Thornton: According to Buster Olney, the White Sox want to trade Matt Thornton, a lefty reliever. Read about it HERE. Thornton is a 35 year old pitcher who posted a 3.32 ERA last season. Not too shabby. I think I remember the Yankees being connected to Thornton for 2 seconds during the season but then it went away. A lefty reliever is someone that the Yankees could use, although I believe that starting pitching needs to come first. If you have that quality starter, you don’t necessarily need to rush to get that second lefty in the pen, you have Boone to plug the hole. We’ll see on this one.

Tim Lincecum: The report out of San Francsico is that the Giants have “exchanged broad numbers and ideas” with Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum. Read HERE. Lincecum only wants a 1 or 2 year deal. I’m telling you, I find that very very odd. Why if your happy in a city and a team like the Giants, would you only want to keep it to minimum years? Something’s up. In this day and age where teams are slowly realizing that locking up players for long term deals only blows up in their faces, it should be the reverse; Lincecum should want to stay long term and the Giants should be less inclined. It’s weird and it’s also just my assessment.

Matt Garza: Joel Sherman New York Post reports that the Yankees are interested in Matt Garza but there is no official meeting as of yet. Read HERE. It is interesting to watch Theo Epstein’s new life as a non-rival GM unfold. I actually see a lot of potential trades between the Yankees and Cubs because of Cashman and Epstein’s fondness for each other, plus, at the end of the day, they aren’t at odds because it’s different leagues. Garza is a good pitcher, but I’m not so sure I would be willing to unload a lot for him. He’s not an ace, he’s a good pitcher, that’s it.

Prince Fielder: The Mariners are reportedly very interested in the Prince. Read HERE. They are so interested that they have made Justin Smoak available to do it. It’s funny how things work. The Yankees lost out on a last minute deal between the Mariners in the summer of 2010 when they were afraid to pull the trigger on Jesus Montero, Nova and Eduardo Nunez for Cliff Lee. Suddenly the Texas Rangers swooped in and dangled Smoak and the deal was done. Now, he’s just another guy the Mariners are willing to unload.

Stay tuned here for more rumors and trade stuff!!
