The Yankees signed 34-year-old Christian Bethancourt to a minor league contract, adding organizational depth behind the plate without using a 40-man roster spot. Bethancourt is a journeyman backup catcher with a career .229/.259/.362 slash line over parts of eight major league seasons. He's played for six different organizations and hasn't appeared in the majors since 2024.
Sure, it's a low-risk move. But that's the problem.
The Yankees continue to settle for depth pieces instead of finding legitimate talent. Bethancourt is a solid defensive catcher with a strong arm, but he has never been a consistent major league hitter and isn't the answer for a team with World Series expectations. He is not a star. In some regards he is just as good as Austin Wells and that ain't good.
At some point, "organizational depth" has to become "major league talent." The Yankees desperately need a catcher who can actually impact games, yet they keep rolling the dice on reclamation projects and career backups. If this is the front office's idea of improving the roster, it's no wonder fans are frustrated.
