Family and community are important elements of a person’s life. When a family or community gets together to accomplish something big, usually everyone gets involved to help in some capacity, be it making phone calls, or collecting donations, offering space or just showing up and making sure things are run smoothly and organized. It’s nice to see, and the concept has been going on for many decades. It's kindness... and it's what makes the world go 'round.
Well, Bleeding Yankee Blue received an email from a guy who wants to make a difference in his own community and so, we read his note and recognized just how courteous and determined he is to making sure his "guys", volunteers mind you, get the proper quarters they need. His name is Dan, and he is the Captain of the South Orange, New Jersey Rescue Squad (Website is Southorangrescuesquad.org.) He simply wrote me this:
“We are having a fundraising party and auction on Saturday, May 31st at Bunny's Sports Bar in South Orange, NJ. At this fundraiser, we will be featuring a lot of great Yankees memorabilia up for auction.”
I was curious... and I'm not gonna lie, I was pretty much interested from the jump. I could tell this guy meant business. He wanted to do the right thing and I reached out to get more information. The first thing I asked was how he was going to do the fundraiser. Well, he's auctioning off incredible Yankee memorabilia, among other things. Here’s the list so far:
- Joe Girardi signed Jersey with the inscription "2009 WS Champs"
- Alex Rodriguez signed jersey. It is both framed and has a PSA/DNA authenticated and certified
- Signed Derek Jeter baseball
- Gift Basket from the New York Yankees that includes a signed Brett Gardner and David Robertson baseball & official Yankees clothing items and Yankees glassware.
- 4 tickets to a luxury box at a Jets game.
Oh, and add in a gift basket of BleedingYankeeBlue.com clothing and accessories as well, because we are now donating our outstanding hoodies, a Jorge Posada limited edition BYB T-shirt, a women's tank top, a baby onesie and a bunch of different BYB wristbands. Why? Because this is an incredible gesture from a guy who’s volunteering his time to save people’s lives in South Orange New Jersey as part of the rescue squad, and he wants to make sure the other volunteers get what they need as far as a decent facility. I have no problem helping this guy out and you shouldn't either!
Now, you’re asking, “Where exactly does the money raised go?” Good question. I wanted to know too and the answer is complicated, but in a nutshell, the South Orange Volunteer Rescue Squad is in desperate need of decent quarters when they are on duty. Right now they are temporarily in a location that is in no way manageable, but they are doing the best they can with what they have.
It's cramped, they need proper crew sleeping quarters, indoor housing for all their ambulances, a decontamination area and a meeting area separate from the training and multi-purpose room. The goal is to raise enough money so they can construct a new building on the "Firehouse lot" next to the South Orange Firehouse on Sloan Street, for those familiar with the area. In other words, the money goes to help build their new facility and they need your help! They are a 501c3. It’s legit ladies and gentlemen. All donations are tax deductible.
For more information, please go to the South Orange Rescue Squad Facebook page HERE and read more about it and tell them you're attending. It's a party! It's a fundraiser! If you are around on May 31st and want to party and donate (CLICK HERE) for a good cause and be part of an auction for Yankee memorabilia to help volunteer rescue workers raise money in their community, you need to jump in and help out. Plus, you could get some pretty amazing Yankees stuff!
The address and phone number of Bunny’s Sports Bar in South Orange, NJ is: 14 W. South Orange Ave, South Orange, NJ 07079. (973) 763-1377.
Show your support for a community doing the right thing… I tip my cap to you, Dan! Atta boy kid!
