“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow.”― Mary Anne Radmacher
It’s been an ugly June. The Yankees ended the month tied for the third worst record in all of baseball. It feels like forever since New York has won a series.
The media, in New York and elsewhere, has turned on the team. Each day headlines blare accusatory headlines at the Yankees. Talking about how much they stink. How far they have fallen. How their season is slipping away.
Fans are joining in the lament. They wail and cry on social media. They curse and scream. They pile on Joe Girardi, or the players, or the management.
Enough.
We are a Yankees’ Nation. We have absolutely nothing to prove. There is no better pedigree in all of baseball or even all of professional sports more revered than that of Pinstripes. You should not have to be reminded of this.
The Yankees will always be a class apart. Let the other teams think they are winning. Let the other fans crow. Hold your head up high. You are a Yankee Fan, and nobody can change that. You still support the best team in baseball. You know who will win when it really matters.
Remember, the Yankees were not even supposed to get this far. They were supposed to fail right out of the gate. Get a hold of yourself.
“Things don’t go wrong and break your heart so you can become bitter and give up. They happen to break you down and build you up so you can be all that you were intended to be.”
― Charles Jones
The mistake being made is that the Yankees need to win for us to support them. That is completely backwards. Yankee Fans need to support their team when they are down and let them know we are there for them. Get your head in the game.
We are here to help them win. If you are not doing your job, your blood does not run Yankee Blue. Perhaps you should cheer for another team. Then you will know what it’s really like to be a suffering fan.
The Yankees have lost a lot lately. But take heart, this will not continue. The cliché is that one cannot appreciate winning without losing. It is cliché because it is true. Nothing worth having is easy. It is not that you fall, but that you get back up. You may have heard these phrases before but hear them again. Really hear them.“Champions keep playing until they get it right.”― Billie Jean King
Don’t throw tantrums. Don’t give up. Don’t act like a loser. Act like a Champion. Comfort yourself with the class and dignity the Pinstripes require. Ignore the haters. You are above that pettiness. Give them a faint smile at most and continue on.
Your team is still the New York Yankees. They are the best team that baseball has ever seen. They have rewarded you time and time and time again for supporting them. Now is the time for us to pay the Yankees back. And it should never be with our backs, turned upon them.
It is literally the very least we can do.
