The way I see it, Andy Pettitte will do what he always does when his team's back is against the wall, he'll step it up and be "that guy"...the one that lift's the Yankees' spirits and helps prevent the losing and the bleeding and that anger from Yankees fans. We've seen Pettitte do it in his career and in the post season and now, after a year off enjoying his retirement, Andy Pettitte is back and he'll look around him, see just what needs to be done and lead our team. That's his way, that's the Yankee way and no one does it better than him.
Yes, we are down, we have injury, but we are definitely not out. Guys like Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte and to some extent CC Sabathia, Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira have been around the Yankee organization long enough to know that while no one truly believes in giving up in baseball, everyone knows that losing is a cancer and the best thing to do is come back the next day and win. Once you win 1, you win 2 and then you have a winning streak and maybe go 5 in a row...or more! Momentum is key to winning, but first you need the guys on the team to lift up the rest. Andy's that guy.
Last night sucked. Hiroki Kuroda had no business pitching. I say that because the inconsistency of Kuroda is now tired and old. I don't want to know what he felt like, whether or not he threw good pitches and just got beat. No. I want to hear that he let his team down, that he can't find a rhythm and that he knows he needs to do better. Where's Larry Rothschild when you need him because if starting pitchers can't pitch and the bullpen gets worn out night after night, there's no way we're making it to October. Starters need to pitch until the 7th or 8th inning. The bullpen needs to be used as support, not necessity. Where's the rhythm? Where's the momentum? I'll tell you where it is and where it begins... with Andy Pettitte.
So yeah, while Andy doesn't pitch tonight he knows his role...win. We need to take a moment and realize we got our ass handed to us yesterday. We need to get into the cages practice hitting 101 and tonight we start by putting our trust in Phil Hughes who is coming off a stellar outing. Once Hughes gives us a win, look for mighty Andy to take the baton and lift this ball cub, it's spirits and help get alittle something going for New York. I expect vintage Andy Pettitte now...he may be 40 but he still has that fire in the belly to help us get there. How do I know? Well...he came out of retirement for us, didn't he? I'd say he's our guy, in fact, I have no doubt about it.
