When Mariano Rivera was seen injuring his knee on YES camera's yesterday during batting practice the social media blew up, rightfully so! Lots of concern for Rivera and the Yankees and also, lots of speculation. Too much speculation if you ask me, but I think fans were just so genuinely concerned some got caught up in guessing what was wrong with Mo.
Well, as the game progressed all we learned was Rivera's initial diagnosis was a strained knee. Once again, many Yankee fans on twitter and facebook, who obviously moonlight as doctors, began speculating the extent of Rivera's injury and that the Yankees season is over. Anyway, I just wanted to list below the facts as we know them from the New York Yankees and from Rivera himself:
*The Yankees closer confirmed that he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, as well as a partially torn meniscus, in a batting practice mishap on Thursday.
*At the very least, the all-time saves leader is expected to miss the rest of the 2012 season.
*Rivera regularly participates in shagging fly balls during batting practice, considering it part of his exercise regimen and one of his favorite times of the day. Rivera lunged for a ball hit by Jayson Nix near the warning track in left-center field when his knee buckled and the 42-year-old lost his footing, landing on the dirt before crumpling against the outfield fence. Rivera immediately grabbed at his right knee in agony.
*Rivera was taken to Kansas University MedWest hospital for an MRI during Thursday's game, which revealed the tear. An initial diagnosis offered the more encouraging term of a "twisted knee," but Royals head team physician Vincent Key confirmed the Yankees' worst fears hours later.
*The Yankees want to have Rivera travel to New York to be examined by their own physicians, but they are not expecting a miraculous change of fortune
*Girardi said that he would sleep on how to patch his bullpen together, but it seems likely that David Robertson will be pressed into service as the new closer, with Rafael Soriano elevated to eighth-inning duties.
BYB will, of course, bring you all the latest Rivera injury/recovery as it becomes available. Get well soon Mo, we love you!
