Freddy Garcia just pitched the best start of all Yankees pitchers this season. He looked like a veteran out there. That's because he is. Many don't like Freddy Garcia. They think he's washed up and doesn't fit the Yankees mold. Well, what do you think of Freddy now. A 6 inning 2 hit shutout and then he handed it off to the Three Headed Monster. That's what I call baseball.
Kim Jones asked Girardi about Freddy's velocity, or lack there of it and how he was able to change up his pitchers creatively today. She then asked if that's why he was in the rotation. Joe answered Yes. I've always believed that veteran pitching, intertwined with youngsters make a ballclub better. They feed off each other and it makes for a good dynamic in the clubhouse. The other important thing are veterans usually can be thrown into any situation because they've been there before based on experience and career. I think that was Freddy today. Put it this way, this guy didn't pitch all season. Today was his first appearance and he did damn good. I tip my cap.(photo: Getty)
I'm pleased with the hitting today, thanks to Freddy, he was able to shut the Rangers down while the Yankees built their lead. Teixeira had a home run and 3 RBI's early on and Cano had a nice home run hitting the right field pole later on to give the Yanks some breathing room. Team effort for sure.
The Three Headed Monster made an appearance today and Joba is hot as hell. 1 IP, 2 K's. You have to love that. Soriano stumbled a bit giving up 2 runs, but the way I see it, nobody's perfect. At the end of the 8th, he got the double play he needed and got out of the inning. (photo: Getty)
The post game show today discussed how cold weather and Soriano don't agree with each other. I say, he's a big boy getting paid millions to pitch 1 inning. If he can't handle the cold in April, how's he going to handle the cold in October? Suck it up and do your job. For the record, Soriano wasn't complaining, but for some reason, people need to put excuses out there for him not shutting down the Rangers batters 1,2, 3 in the 8th. Seriously, don't worry about Soriano, he's fine.
2 minor notes... Swisher is slowing coming along, 2 hits today, 1 double and was 2-4.
A-Rod came out and was replaced by Chavez in the 7th. He claimed to have some lower back stiffness, and in the raw stadium today, it was probably smart to take him out, just in case.
Final score today, Yankees 5 - Rangers 2. Tomorrow night it's CC Monster vs. Ogando. CC needs his first win and in my world of "series wins", there isn't a better time than tomorrow night to clinch the series and get your first win too... right CC? Do it for Bleeding Yankee Blue.

ReplyDeleteGarcia was amazing today. He seemed to have a plan for every batter and executed it. Hats off to Gustavo today who called a great game! And my boy Joba, no more "Joba rules", just keep on rolling brother!
ReplyDeleteGarcia was Mussina-like today; he had good location on all his pitches. That's the key to low-velocity pitching. Great first start for him.
