I see a future for Aaron Hicks and it's not on the New York Yankees. One can hope.
Look, I sound like a total dick and I admit that. The reality is that Aaron Hicks is probably a pretty great guy and a dynamic teammate and I think that is very fair to say. But being a nice guy doesn't mean you get to hang with the big team. Hick's talents are lacking, and it's been evident for a few years now. We wrote ENDING THE AARON HICKS EXPERIMENT on March 17th here on BYB. Let me be clear... nothing has changed. We still want this guy gone.
Well, it looks as if maybe the Yankees are defeated when it comes to Hicks as well. Our buds over at Empire Sports Media write this of Hicks and it all started on Opening Day:
"There may be a changing of the guard underway in the outfield after Yankees manager Aaron Boone elected to bench Aaron Hicks in favor of Oswaldo Cabrera on Opening Day......based on Cabrera’s spring, where he hit .333 with a .390 OBP, including four homers and 14 RBIs across 54 ABs, Boone has finally come to the conclusion that his young super utilityman has earned a starting job....
Last year over 44 regular season games, Cabrera hit .247 with a .312 OBP, six homers, and 19 RBIs. Hicks, on the other hand, hit .216 with a .330 OBP, eight homers, and 40 RBIs across 130 games."
And now look, this is one game we are talking about in the 2023 season. There will be more, and no doubt Hicks will play once in a while. But what the Yankees are signaling here is that youth, energy and the willingness to try as hard as you can is what Cabrera offers... and Hicks? Well... maybe his time has come.
Good piece Alexander Wilson.
