It's an affiliation that can never be broken despite the fact that the Dodgers moved across the country more than sixty years ago from Ebbets Field in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Despite the abandonment and tears, Dem Bums will always hold a special place in Brooklyn Dodger fans' hearts. And this team, this year, right now has to bring out the grittiness of the past to Fenway Park in order to take down the mighty Red Sox. This grit was signature game play of legacy Dodgers teams of the past that used to face their arch rivals the New York Yankees year after year. The Dodgers need to go Brooklyn on those Sox and bring home a victory that will make both coasts proud.

When my mom, who turns 76 tomorrow, was growing up she thought there were only two teams: The Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees. They were "The Rivalry"- well before the Yankees-Red Sox. The Yankees beat up on the Brooklyn Bums six times in the World Series. Eventually, the Dodgers would take one from the Yankees, two years before they left Flatbush for Hollywood. The Dodgers have won the World Series six times as an organization. Overall the two teams have met 11 times in the Fall Classic, more times than any other pair of teams from the American and National Leagues.

Fast forward to this series- The Los Angeles Dodgers versus the Boston Red Sox- two teams that have not met in the World Series in more than 100 years. "That was in 1916, when the Red Sox beat the Brooklyn Robins in five games. A young Red Sox left-hander named Babe Ruth — then with just seven career home runs — went 14 innings to win Game 2 at Braves Field. The Red Sox played there to sell more tickets than they could have at Fenway, less than two miles away," reported the New York Times.

This Series is the perfect storm- legacy teams in vintage ball parks, with big salaries and big markets; great for baseball and great for fans. "In that way, nearly everyone on the field will be hoping to achieve something new and priceless. For all of the Boston bling and Dodgers dollars, this World Series will play out before passionate fans, on opposite coasts, by franchises steeped in history in two of the majors’ three oldest ballparks (sorry, Wrigley Field). As (Dodgers' president Stan) Kasten said, sincerely this time, “It’s going to be as pure of a baseball experience as you can have in the modern era," reported the Times.

Here's hoping we see the sunny California crew go Brooklyn on the Fenway faithful and bring home a world championship, something they have not done since 1988, the last time they even played in the Series. Of course, we all wish this was the original rivalry playing before us this October, but if we had to pick two teams to bring the fun back to Yankee fans, it's definitely these two teams. May the best team win and may that team be the Dodgers...bring out those Ebbets Field ghosts and #DoDamage.
