Quick note, just because we wrote GENTRY SAYS THE YANKEES SHOULD SIGN MIKE OLT the other day because Mike Olt was released by the White Sox. The idea of the Yankees maybe signing Olt as a back up option at third base makes perfect sense, and a great idea, but apparently the Padres needed Olt more than the Yankees.
According to several sources, but we'll go with San Diego Tribune on this one:
"The
Padres have signed third baseman and former top prospect Mike Olt to a
minor league contract. The deal does not include an invitation to major
league spring training.
Olt,
27, was released by the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday and quickly
scooped up by a Padres organization lacking third-base depth."
That's the key word there. Depth. We need that, and sure, the idea of a back up in Rob Refsnyder is fine, but Ref is not a 3rd baseman, Olt is.
Whatever the case... just passing it along. Carry on.
