And there's been speculation for a while now that the Red Sox would in fact re-sign him anyway. So... this really isn't much of a surprise.
According to ESPN, "The Boston Red Sox made a contract offer to pitcher Jon Lester when he met with the team's owners earlier this week, according to a major league source.
The terms of the offer were not disclosed, and the source said he did not expect Lester to make a quick decision.
Lester met with the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday and was scheduled to meet with the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney."
This is simply a wait and see situation at this point. Lester of course will get a ton of interest, but if I had to put money on it, he's either going to the Cubs with Theo Epstein or back to Boston.
Suzie Pinstripe of BYB just wrote this in her piece BYB HOT STOVE: VOLUME II:
"The Blue Jays are on a spending spree again and this time they have their eye on Jon Lester. Toronto is one of the six teams in the market for southpaw Jon Lester,WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford reports."
Where are the Yankees? No interested, as far as we can see.
