ONE MORE ROUND
I’ve always been a fan of the movie ROCKY. It’s a good movie, but it’s really a great human story with a heart, kinda like BYB. We’ve all been the southpaw slugger for South Philly in our live at one time or another.
No matter who you are, where you come from or what you do for a living, we’ve all been a long shot at something. One of my favorite relationships from Balboa’s story is his bond with his friend and trainer Mickey Goldmill.
I bet we’d all love to hear someone yell from our corner when the punches have knocked us down. A voice to cry out, “GET UP! GET UP, YA SON OF BITCH! DON’T LIE DOWN TO THIS BUM! DIE HARD! One more round, ‘cause Mickey loves ya.”
The second half of the 2014 season is off and running and the New York Yankees NEED Mickey Goldmill in a big way. It is time to go. Every game is a playoff game! And starts now. The Yankees swept the Reds in our house! And now we're only 3 games out of 1st in the AL East. Bottom line, we can do this! We need to play as if they are 10 back. Let it go!
Nobody cares that the Yanks lost almost all of their rotation. No one wants to hear that they have injured, older players and that the trade market is not bursting with options. Play like there is no tomorrow!
Our club is a .515 club, and the East is still a crowded house. It’s anybody’s division…to call back to a dark time in Yankee history, the Sox of 2004 wore shirts that read: “Why Not Us?”
Well, Yanks…why not you? This team CAN make the playoffs. It is not going to be easy, but does that mean you call it a season? Get the hell outta here.
This is Derek Jeter’s last stand and if these Yankees have any heart at all they’ll circle the wagons and follow their Captain into Hell. We read about all that is wrong with this club. The age, the injuries and why they are flawed in their very foundation…but let’s focus on what they do have, shall we?
The Yankees have speed; a great defensive outfield, a strong pen and a guy who makes players around him believe it can be done…that player?
“The Shortstop, number 2, Derek Jeter, number 2.”
Yes, it has a Hollywood storyline, but what in Jeet’s career hasn’t been? The day he reached 3,000 hits he went 5 for 5 and number 3,000 was a dinger. If you believe it can happen then you have won half the battle. Believe, Yanks! Believe and fight!
I know it won’t be easy and remember Rocky lost that first fight against Apollo Creed…but he left every bit of his soul in that ring. I know Derek Jeter will do the same. I can only hope that the Yankees (old and new) will hear the raspy, graveled bark of their own Mickey Goldmill, “ONE MORE ROUND! ‘Cause Mickey loves ya.” It can be done.
There have been far more flawed clubs than this Yankee group that have done the improbable. So here we go, folks.
To quote Kilmer’s Doc Holiday, another movie character I’ve always liked, “Indeed, sir. The last charged of Wyatt Earp and his Immortals.”
Jeter and Company can find a way. It ain’t over yet.
