A WIN MAKES THE CAPTAIN'S DAY MUCH BETTER
The chanting seemed short. The ovations did too. Probably because that's the way Derek Jeter wanted it... and that's OK. He's always seemed uncomfortable with people fawning all over him. After all, he knows his role...it's to be the best ballplayer he can be and get as many championships as possible doing it. That's his job. I love him for it.
Sure, the celebration was wonderful, seeing Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada all with the Cap, but it seemed to end as quickly as it came. For Jeter, it was nice, but there was a game to play... and he was ready to play it.
The Yankees won today on Opening day. Hiroki Kuroda looked good, and on a day that Shawn Kelley got the Save in relief, we also found out that David Robertson was hurt, yet again, the second time he was given the closer role in a 3 years, and just like that, we now wait for DRob to heal.
There was commotion on Twitter. People saying "Are you kidding?" when the reports of DRob to the DL surfaced. My reply was simple... "Stay calm, it's April." We all know DRob will be back and be great in the closer role. Injuries happen and his was a groin injury. The guy's gonna be fine, he's a gamer. No panicking.
Kuroda went 6.1 innings, allowing 8 hits and 2 runs today. I loved the way he looked. I loved that he got the win on Opening day and didn't spoil it for the fans on Jeter's special day. Great work.
The bats were nice today as well. In the 3rd, Derek Jeter hit into a double play. In the process, Yangervis Solarte scored. In the 4th, Solarte singled and Alfonso Soriano scored. In the 5th, Jacoby Ellsbury singled scoring Jeet. Over all, we looked good. Players were engaged and ready to rock. Jeter himself even hit a nice double but he just didn't bust out of the box like he should have. He thought it was out. We all know that if that was Jorge Posada jogging out of the box, Jeet would have razzed him bad. Let's hope Posada broke the Captain's balls back today!
Final Score: Yankees 4 - Orioles 2.
