VERNON WELLS IS BACK!

Vernon Wells is back!  Sure, it's bold to make that statement, but no one is rooting harder for this guy to succeed than me.  Part of the reason the Yanks were so good in April was because of Vernon Wells. Much of the reason the Yankees won yesterday was also because of Wells.  When Wells hits, he contributes and the Yanks always have a chance.

Now look, today he could very well suck the life out of me again and go 0-4, but I am tired of reading that Vernon Wells was a waste of money and not a good addition.  The truth of the matter is, he's 34 years old, not 44 and if he can get that confidence back, like say... yesterday, there is no doubt he will be helpful again down the stretch.  The key word is CONFIDENCE though.

I'm tired of reading the "back to reality" pieces surrounding him. I have a different take...I want Wells proving them wrong.

Wells has always been a good hitter and him slumping in California with the Angels was bad, but we all knew it wouldn't last. Let me re-phrase that; Cashman knew it wouldn't last. Vernon Wells Jr., Vernon's dad knew it wouldn't last ( read GUESS WHO BELIEVED IN VERNON WELLS THE MOST?). We Yankee fans were puzzled with the signing this off-season, I was right there with you. But Wells came and Wells proved he still had it. April and May were great for Vernon. Finally, he is back to reality. But I predict, and I hate predicting, that he's back and it the bad slump is over! Slumps don't last, that's why their called "slumps."

Vernon was asked about it recently and said "I just have to ride it out." That's the right answer. When you slump, you don't retire, you don't ask to be taken out of the lineup. You grind it out. Maybe you take a mental health day, but you're in the cage working on your hitting and battling until you get back. Wells will get back and Wells looked like Wells yesterday.  My take is Vernon Wells will be fine. And you know what? Instead of writing about how much he sucks, why not praise the guy for carrying us on his back this season with the absence of Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson during that strong beginning of the year. He, Lyle Overbay and Travis Hafner might have slowed down, but it's not over, it's never over...
