Look, Gardner has only appeared in 9 games this season. And now there's word from Marc Carig of the Star Ledger that Gardner is expected to see Dr. James Andrews on Monday, read HERE. It's never good when you need to see Dr. James Andrews. Sure, Brian Cashman can be calm, cool and collected in public, but there is no question they want some consistancy in left field and Raul Ibanez, Andruw Jones, Jayson Nix and Dewayne Nix aren't exactly consistant.
I've received a lot of email asking me about guys like Alfonso Soriano. Recently Soriano went out to the press and stated he'd like to be traded to a contender. Read that HERE. Look, I love the guy and I'd love a reunion but Soriano likes to strike out a lot. Would it make sense to trade for a guy like Soriano and utilize him in the outfield until Brett Gardner gets back? Then, after the All-Star break let Soriano become a rotating DH, outfielder and bench player the rest of the season giving others a rest? It's an interesting question, but I'm not sure I have the answer.
Some would say that the Yankees could do the same thing with guys like Jayson Nix, or DeWayne Wise. Sure, Wise has absolutely no bat, and neither Wise nor Nix have the power Soriano has, but Wise and Nix do play a decent outfield. Do I trust Andruw Jones and Raul Ibanez in our outfield every night? No, I don't.
So the question is, do the Yankees "Stay" as Austin Powers said to Number 2, or do they look for a rental outfielder with a power bat and outfield background to assure the hole is filled properly?
My take on this is simple, we have a great outfielder out until after the All-Star break and possibly longer with the visit to Dr. Andrews coming... so we need someone. Who it will be is a different and complicated story. Sure, Cashman can suggest the Yanks aren't thinking about filling the outfielder hole, but it's on their mind, believe me. Stay tuned for this...
