The Steinbrenners have a fondness for Brian Cashman and Brian Cashman has a fondness for the Steinbrenners. It wasn't always that kind of relationship, but with the passing of George, it almost seems like the relationship between the 2 parties is different now. It doesn't mean Brian Cashman doesn't have to do his job, he does, it just means that signing 1 player from the free agent market doesn't mean an instant World Championship like George would have expected...in fact, there is some patience involved now and it almost looks like Cash is allowed to do his job a bit better. Remember in 2005 when Cashman nearly left the Yankees? It was right about that time that George may have realized that Brian Cashman was one of the best GM's in baseball and he later gave Cash more control...and in turn, Cash stayed. Thank God, or who knows if we would have won in 2009. Now, let's not forget, even though George is gone, it doesn't mean it's Cashman's way or the highway. The Steinbrenners and Randy Levine insisted on Rafael Soriano last winter, someone Cash was against. In some respects, Cashman's instincts were right about RaSo, but he did a decent job after coming off injury down the stretch. So yes, the Steinbrenners still have say, but Cashman really has been allowed to take the reigns and do what he thinks is best for the Yankee organization. I like that.
According to Joel Sherman, read it HERE, the Steinbrenners and Cashman are expected to strike a new deal next week, meaning, Cash will be back with the Yankees and the new business of Yankeeland will take hold, looking for Pitching pitching pitching and most importantly, offering CC Sabathia all the money they've been stashing under their pillow for the past 3 years. We all knew the CC Sabathia opt-out clause would take affect, we're just waiting for the announcement.Brian Cashman is coming off a $6 million, 3 year deal. I have no doubt he'll be paid more and I expect 3 more years, I just don't know what that figure would be.
We can bitch every year that we don't make the playoffs and claim that Brian Cashman's got to go, but this may be the hardest job in baseball. You have to get players that can perform, not to mention perform in New York City and you have a strong fist pounding over you every day if it doesn't work out the way you thought. But Brian Cashman loves his job and loves the New York Yankees. Cashman could have given up a long time ago, he didn't. Hell, after an embarrassing loss in this first round playoff this year, he could have jumped ship, but he didn't. That's because he believes in his Yankees and it is clear to me, the Hal has a true respect for Brian.
Look, the Steinbrenner's winning attitude hasn't changed because George is gone, they expect it, but guess what? In our Yankeeland world, Cash expects it too, his approach is not as aggressive as George's would be. I'm hopeful and positive this deal gets done next week and it's business as usual in the Bronx, because one thing's for certain... not having October baseball in New York sucks and we need Cash to fix it, no doubt.
