WHAT'S UP BIG PAPI'S SLEEVE?
This picture scares the crap out of any Yankees fan I bet. First Terry Francona walks, then Theo Epstein jumps a sinking ship, now David Ortiz tells ESPN (Read it HERE) that he’s interested in playing for the New York Yankees.
“Too much drama… I don’t know if I want to be part of this drama for the year,” says Papi. Translation…”I don’t want to be a part of a ball club that is collapsing, I want to be with a winner.”
Then Ortiz continues about the Yankees: “It’s great from what I hear… It’s a good situation to be involved in. Who doesn’t want to be involved in a great situation where everything goes right?”
Look, is this surprising? No. Ortiz knows his days in Boston are over. This is typical, Papi is trying to butter up the Yankee brass, expressing his want and need to put on pinstripes, he wants a job after all and he wants to be part of a winning ball club, not a club that can’t make the playoffs.
David Ortiz is buddies with Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez and it’s no surprise that when loser’s lose, people scatter. Look, David Ortiz will never be a New York Yankee and the reasons behind that conclusion are simple. First off, he’s going to want big money, money I cannot see the Yankee parting with. We have bats that do the same damage as Big Papi’s and why do we need more drama in the Bronx anyway?
Plus, Ortiz wants a multi-year contract. Something that the Yankees surely won’t provide. While he batted .309 with 29 home runs and 96 RBI’s and making $12.5 million, I strongly doubt the Yanks would every pounce on this guy as a logical solution to the Designated Hitter spot in the lineup.
Yes, George Steinbrenner once wanted David Ortiz in the Yankees lineup, read about that HERE, but let’s not mince words… George is no longer with us and Papi is getting older, those days are long gone. If George was still with us and the Yankees were in this position, losing in the first round of the playoffs, there’s no question, David Ortiz would be coming to the Bronx as a knee jerk reaction to losing. But this is the era of patience and there’s no way Papi will be in pinstripes…ever.
