If there’s one thing I know about Alex, it’s that he basks in the joy of the New York fans. He would be perfectly happy listening to his name being chanted loudly throughout Yankee Stadium for 3 minutes than walking down a quiet street with no one bothering him. He can’t stay away from it, he’s got alittle ego. Nothing wrong with that. But the other part of this equation is that he’s an absolutely talented athlete and whatever slump he’s in, he’ll fix, and he’ll fix it soon. Why? Because he knows if he doesn’t, those fans disappear.
It’s not in Alex’s nature to suck for too long, just look at his numbers going all the way to Seattle. Every season, his numbers are huge, and the years that aren’t, are still totally respectable for any good ballplayer. And think about this, some seasons he may have been hurt or some, he may have played healthy all-season. It doesn’t matter, because if you break them down, he’s transformed himself into an iconic athlete. Hence, A-Rod is loved by many Yankees fans.
Now, let’s face it, before the 2009 championship, Alex was “on notice” by us fans. He worked to gain the love from the fans, and received it when he did every right in 2009. After that, a weight was lifted, he became relaxed, he matured, and he became a Yankee Icon.
This season, we were all excited for Alex. He was 100% healthy and we were looking for big numbers from the get go. Well, that happened, then suddenly, it disappeared as fast as it came and this is where we’re at…he’s struggling at the plate.
So what can happen to make Alex right? I feel like some of this slump has to do with his surroundings. Jeter, not hitting, Swisher and his slow start, Posada having problems. I think all of it circles round to affect certain players. I believe that.
The best part is when I saw Jeter have the best game of his season 2 days ago, I immediately said to my sons, it’s only a matter of time before Alex breaks out. Why? Because a weight’s been lifted with the Captain and in a player's psyche, they want to be that guy with the big game. Now they’re not thinking about hitting as much as they’re thinking of being “that guy.” Last night, Alex became that guy again, he has that huge hit scoring 2 and winning the game. To me, that was the beginning.
Look, I’m just trying to put this into some kind of perspective for you. Alex is fine, and I predict the hits will now come. He’s way too talented and way to egotistical to let it linger. You know he’s working with Zen master Long and they’ll fix the flaw… Long always does and when that happens, Alex will explode again and rack up pretty amazing numbers. I believe it in my heart. Any other way would be ridiculous. Expect big things, tonight it started and by the Red Sox series this Friday he'll be back, after all, what a great way for an ego maniac to get the fans to chant his name for 3 minutes, right? He could just kick the crap out of Boston. Sounds like a plan… now let’s execute it, shall we Alex?
