It's no surprise that the Yankees need to figure out what to do with Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano, it's a dilemma, no doubt. If they try to retain both, how can they do it, yet still try and get under their $189 million luxury tax line by the year 2014,especially if the Yanks think about wanting to add pitching. It seems like a mess and it's not going to be easy.
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com writes (Read HERE) that Randy Levin believes both guys will be brought back to the Yanks, a scenario I just can't picture at this point. Why? Because if the Yankees are seriously interested in a pitcher like Cole Hamels or even some other arm, how is it possible that they do that, yet still offer someone like Robinson Cano a long term deal and still hold onto their star center fielder too? It just seems to me that the Yankees will be out there spending again, don't you think?Look, you have to assume the Yankees will want to lock up Robinson Cano for a long time, he's a home grown guy that falls under the umbrella of a Derek Jeter, Don Mattingly and every other guy the Yankees "breed" in their farm system and highlight when they make it pro. Cano fits the mold, he's a Yankee for life in my eyes and while some might disagree, I believe what I write.
Someone like Curtis, whom I absolutely love in pinstripes could also be signed, Levine is right, but then you have to wonder, will the Yankees then just have to pass on someone like Matt Cain or Cole Hamels if they become available this winter? Look, if the Yankees don't win it all this year, there is no doubt Yankee brass is going to start growing impatient. That will mean they may try and make a splash to get a big pitcher. Well, that costs money, especially if they want Hamels. Then, if they were to get him, you really then have to eliminate either Cano or Granderson from returning when their duties are complete, especially after it was being reported that Brian Cashman insisted the Yankees would not go over the $189 million mark. So, someone most likely can't get signed. If I had to put money on it, my money is on Cano to return. That's just how I see it.Now it's true, the Yankees are capable of doing anything and if Granderson were to have another amazing year like he did last year, it would be way too difficult to no re-sign him. I'm just not sure what would happen at that point...the only way would be if the Yankees went back to their old ways. But seeing just how insistent they are about NOT going over the $189 million threshold... I'm just not sure...can you tell I just can't decide on this one?
