IT'S BIZARRO IN YANKEE GAMES THIS YEAR

Every Yankee game feels the same this year.  They generally score a few runs, 1-3 early, then have to try to hang on if they want to win.  They have so many games where they score early, but then can’t score any additional runs in the 6th to 9th innings, and often for even longer than this.

This pattern has occurred in 20 games in just July and August alone. Check this out:

  • July 1 vs. Tampa Bay – Yanks score a run in the 4th inning, then shutout rest of the way and lost 2-1
  • July 2 vs. Tampa Bay – Yanks scored 3 runs by the 4th inning, then shutout rest of the way and lost 6-3
  • July 4 vs. Minnesota – Yanks scored 6 runs by the 2nd inning, then could not score rest of the way and held on for the 6-5 win
  • July 5 vs. Minnesota – Yanks scored 1 in the 5th and led 1-0 until the 7th but could not score rest of the way and lost 2-1 in the 10th
  • July 6 vs. Minnesota – Yanks had 9 runs by the 4th inning and could not score the rest of the way, but held on for the 9-7 win
  • July 7 vs. Cleveland – Yanks got 5 runs by the 3rd inning, then none the rest of the way, but held on for a 5-3 win.

  • July 8 vs. Cleveland – Yanks 3 runs by the 2nd inning and led 3-1, but failed to score the rest of the way and lost 5-3
  • July 9 vs. Cleveland – Yanks had 3 runs by the 5th and led 3-0 but failed to score rest of the way and lost 9-3.
  • July 11 vs. Baltimore – Yanks get 2 runs by the 3rd inning, then none the rest of the way and lost 3-2 in 10 innings
  •  July 13 vs. Baltimore – Yanks score in the 1st inning then fail to score rest of the game and lost 3-1

  • July 18 vs. Cincinnati – Yanks get 4 runs by the 5th, then fail to score rest of the game and hold on for the 4-3 win
  • July 21 vs. Texas – Yanks get 2 runs by the 4th inning then fail to score rest of the game and lost 4-2
  • July 22 vs. Texas – Yanks don’t score until the 13th inning, then get the winning run in the 14th and win 2-1
  •  July 23 vs. Texas – Yanks score 2 by the 3rd inning, none the rest of the way and held on for a 2-1 win
  • July 25 vs. Toronto – Yanks had 6 runs by the 3rd inning, none the rest of the way and held on for the 6-4 win
  •  July 29 vs. Texas – Yanks had 2 runs by the 5th and none the rest of the way and lost 4-2
  •  July 30 vs. Texas – Yanks had 2 runs by 3rd inning and none the rest of the way and lost 3-2
  •  August 5 vs. Detroit – Yanks had 3 runs by the 5th, then didn’t score for 7 innings and lost in the 12th inning to Detroit, 4-3.

That is 20 of the last 37 games that have followed this bizarre and disturbing pattern.  I can’t figure out why our offense would be so much better earlier in the game than late.  But it really does feel like every game is the same.

What do you think? Comment.
