SORRY SEVERINO, IT'S TIME TO MOVE ON!

It's the end of a journey for Yankees fans. The early years of Luis Severino were exciting to watch but those times faded fast, and the last few years have been hard to watch. It's all come to an end, and sadly it needed to happen.

I'm glad Severino's days in pinstripes are over. I'm not trying to be mean but, I couldn't watch it anymore. He's headed to that other New York team now, and I do wish him well. I want to see him succeed when he isn't pitching against us. In a strange way, I feel like the Yankees are finally going in the right direction when it comes to the starting rotation. The Yankees are finally showing that they are looking for stability in the rotation by moving on. It's progression. Or a weird addition by subtraction if you will. Honestly, the same can be said for Domingo German. It's time to move on.

What comes next, no one knows especially since Brian Cashman is washed up and fails too often with his reclamation projects. At least now there are new possibilities on the horizon, and I am not mad at that. The Yankees have been on the same path of failure for a while now so the idea of "new" anything right now doesn't bother me.....may the baseball gods help us and not let Cashman screw it up again.

I have no problems watching Steve Cohen spend money on Severino. At the end of the day, $13 million is a drop in the bucket for him and I hope Severino succeeds. I'd like to see him prove me wrong, but I just don't see Severino as a starter anymore. His mechanics don't bode well for a long or productive future as a starter. Matt Blake tried to fix that, and he couldn't. I can't say I have any sort of faith in Blake at all, because I think he contributed to Severino's failure. I don't know how Severino comes back from that now, and in the end, Cohen is spending a nice chunk of change to try and make a miracle happen. I'll eat my words if I am wrong, but I don't think I am.

So Sevy....thanks for 2017 and 2018. I think the Yankees mishandled you and now you get a fresh start and hopefully we do too. See you in the Subway Series and Sayonara!

SEVERINO GONZO!

And just like that, Luis Severino as a New York Yankee is history. I'll miss the guy!

The New York Post writes:

"Luis Severino isn’t going far in free agency. The former Yankees right-hander is signing a one-year, $13 million deal with the Mets..."

I wish the guy well. I always liked him in Yankee pinstripes.

Good luck Sevy!

GIVING AWAY OUR PROSPECTS TO GET JUAN SOTO ON THE TABLE

The off-season rumor mill sucks when it comes to the MLB and the New York Yankees. One BYB Facebook reader wrote this the other day.

Bill Waterhouse is not wrong.  If you see that BYB doesn't write every day in the off-season, it's because 90% of the stories that are coming from baseball insiders is click bait and really not even true.  It's a game and you're all falling for it.  For us, journalists, bloggers, we have to report on some of it and we do if we find it interesting, but again, Bill Waterhouse is not wrong. In fact, I appreciate him for saying it.

But now I have to share a story that piqued my interest a lot, because it has everything to do with rumor, and some of that rumor has to do with the Yankees unloading prospects. True, not true, I don't care. What I do care about is stating for the record that the Yankees made a huge deal about guys like Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez and now those two names are being floated as players that may be moved in a way to claim Juan Soto.  amNew York writes this gem. But the original story comes from Andy Martino who I'd love to strap a lie-detector test on him because I know he's full of it. But for part of my opinion on this story, let me share what was said:

"According to SNY’s Andy Martino on Wednesday, the Yankees and San Diego Padres have begun “exchanging names,” on a potential trade that would send Juan Soto to the Bronx...

The Yankees could offer the likes of Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe to headline the prospect pool while younger pitchers like Clarke Schmidt and Michael King could be floated as well, per Martino."

So, with everything the Yankees are trying to build to make this team better, why would we give away prospects we have touted for a guy that is a big question mark in the Bronx?  Let's not forget the years of 1996, 1998, 1999 for instance.  A mixture of new free agents and young guys who had a chance to make an impact.  The mixture was crucial to the championship run we all witnessed.  Losing guys that could repeat, the Jeters and Marianos in this new generation would be a mistake, just like when Stick Michael blocked George from shipping them out of the Bronx in the 90's. We need our young guys today. They actually helped our team this past season!

And so that's why if this rumor is true, it's just another indication that Brian Cashman is truly clueless.

Now look, I know we need some big boppers and I know that Soto is a trade and not a free agent and we got to give something up for something good... but then maybe this isn't the move for the Yankees?  Think about 2009.  The Yankees signed 4 free agents and won a championship.  Keeping the younger guys and adding to them feels like a better move.

Now look, I'm in the minority here, but I'd be fine with the Yankees sending Volpe to San Diego.  I'm not a huge fan, I don't like to way he presents himself; he comes off as a big dork with the press; he's not lights out and I feel like the guy isn't some superstar we all think he is.  But I respect ANYONE who likes him and wants him in New York.  But what's more... why do we need to make trades to make our team better? We're the New York Yankees. We have money.  Sign some important free agents and mix them in with our young guys.  That would be a helluva lot better than trading away the farm we've been building, wouldn't it?

Look, time will tell... I just know that I want our team to be better and right now we're doing a whole lot of nothing, and fans are angry.

COULD THE YANKEES ACTUALLY GET YAMAMOTO?

Source: Yuki Taguchi/WBCI/MLB Photos

What does the #18 mean to you? It means Johnny Damon and Didi Gregorius to me and likely others. The last time #18 was worn by a Yankee is was when Andrew Benintendi played for the team. But to Yoshinobu Yamamoto, #18 could mean everything. As reported by SNY, "According to league sources, the Yanks have purposefully held the number 18 for Yamamoto over the past year. That is not only Yamamoto’s number with the Orix Buffaloes, but is traditionally considered the "ace" number in Japan." So could this small gesture lure Yamamoto to the Yankees? Let's drill deeper.

Source: NY Times

"Hiroki Kuroda, a onetime NPB ace, wore 18 with the Yankees. Masahiro Tanaka wore number 18 as an ace for the NPB’s Rakuten Golden Eagles before signing with the Yankees, but took 19 in New York out of respect for Kuroda, who was still on the team," reported SNY. God I love that Tanaka! He truly gave ace-like performance as a Yankee and could Yamamoto be next?

There are several teams linked to the Japanese ace right now including the cross town rival New York Mets. But guess what? #18 is about to be retired to honor Met favorite Darryl Strawberry. According to the New York Post, "Yamamoto, by all indications, would be the right fit for both the Mets and the Yankees. Which doesn’t mean he will end up here; there’s more teams with money to spend now than there’s been since the dawn of free agency in 1976, when the numbers were still low enough that even small-market teams like Montreal and Cleveland were big free-agent players. But when the bids begin to build, assuming Yamamoto is bullish on New York, he can do what precious few have ever done: Craft a full-scale bidding war between baseball’s two fiscal monoliths."

Yet to throw another wrench into the free agency mix, there's Shohei Ohtani who the Post calls "the biggest prize on the market." Although the Yankees and the Mets for that matter are longshots for a deal with Ohtani, Steve Cohen has shown how deep his pockets can go. He even tried to throw his hat in the ring for Aaron Judge. And we know how that went down.

So could the Yankees go for it? The asking price before a bidding war ensues is $200 million. And the bidding war could also include the Dodgers, Red Sox and Giants- all who have #18 available by the way. But if Yamamoto wants to be a Yankee and the Yankees are willing to go for it, we may have our modern day Tanaka come spring.

HOW DOES THAT "ALEX BREGMAN TO YANKEES" STORY MAKE YOU FEEL?

We're used to the Yankees being linked to every free agent on the planet. We're also used to Brian Cashman bringing in old leftovers looking for lightening in a bottle. We're also used to gross trade rumors that make our skin crawl. I found one that makes me violently ill.

Leave it to MLB.com to come up with some outlandish ideas. In case you missed it over your long holiday weekend, THIS one definitely meets up to the outlandish part. I'm not sure what Anthony Castrovince at MLB.com is smoking, but he definitely does not get to speak for every Yankee fan, especially not this one.

So, Anthony's bizarre idea involves a four-team trade that sends Jasson Dominguez to the White Sox and cheating ASSTRO Alex Bregman to the Yankees. Why? Lots of moving parts to a four-team trade but, to make it super simplified the ASSTROS hypothetically won't have enough money to give extensions to elf Jose Altuve and Bregman and Altuve would be top priority. So if they can't keep both, trade Bregman to help replenish their farm while bolstering the infield for the Yankees.

This whole idea is so far-fetched it's laughable to me BUT let's be crazy and say these talks are actually happening for the hell of it. Do we really think the Yankees are okay with moving Dominguez? If they were, they'd be right to ask for the moon and more for him. He made quite the impression in his short time in the majors last season and the Yankees have been high on him since they drafted him. He's young, got a high ceiling and has moved his way up the ranks quickly for a 20-year-old kid who will be part of a dangerous outfield in the future. The Yankees are not looking to move Dominguez, and certainly not for Bregman and other pieces.

Now let's tackle the whole "Yankees fans will get over that 2017 stuff when Bregman is banging out dingers and doubles, improving the club’s on-base ability and making the Bronx Bombers way less Aaron Judge-dependent" argument. Sorry Castrovince, you don't get to speak for all of us. Bregman is a cheater and a tool who isn't deserving to wear pinstripes. That would cheapen the Yankees brand and I will say it and think it every day while I am on this planet. He's not fit for the uniform no matter how many dingers and doubles he can hit even when he isn't cheating.

Integrity means everything to me. Bregman has none. He disgraced the game he claims to love and make millions off of. He got caught and wasn't even sorry about it. His apology press conference was a slap in the face to every baseball fan. He is a piss poor human being and not fit to wear the pinstripes. This kind of trash should stay in the environment it has thrived in. It's thrived there because the organization and owner Jim Crane have no morals. That "2017 stuff" as Castrovince likes to put it, was a dark time in baseball and the Yankees already have enough shenanigans going on within the organization. The Yankees have a culture problem with the way they think and execute.....adding Bregman just adds fuel to the fire. Let's just anger fans and possibly Yankee players more. Brilliant!

This whole idea is one of the dumbest stories I have ever read. Thank goodness this trade scenario is too far-fetched and stupid to ever really happen. I wouldn't be able to stand it.

LACK OF CONFIDENCE WILL BE THE UNDOING OF BRIAN CASHMAN IN BELLINGER PURSUIT

It's already starting with Cody Bellinger

After the Yankees have been attached to Bellinger before the season even ended, it is now being revealed that there are mixed feelings about Bellinger coming to the Bronx. Why? Well... if you're asking me, I'll tell you;  I believe the Yankees front office, and Brian Cashman are unsure with themselves to make the right decision. That's right... they are under a microscope. Every move is being watched by us fans, and no matter what he does, we will kill him through social media or outlets like this.  So, the "hurry up and wait" way of thinking this off-season will ultimately be the Yankees undoing. The same Yankees who have glaring problems... not with their players as much as their front office and analytics department.  It's a mess... and it needed to be fixed before we went out and tried to pursue players... but nothing is different at all.  Hal's not paying attention...  but us fans are.

Inside the Pinstripes writes:

"Although New York has been linked to Bellinger on multiple occasions, it does sound like the Yankees have some concerns, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"The Yankees like free agent Cody Bellinger but some Yankee people are worried about his hard-hit rate even after his brilliant season," Heyman said. "He seems like the perfect fit as an excellent center fielder who bats left-handed and hit .306 after a couple of rough injury years.

"But some analytics work against him (my thought: hard-hit rate favors guys who whiff, aka Joey Gallo, not Bellinger, who hit .279 with two strikes by putting the ball in play)."

And this is the problem.  The Yankees picked up Gallo based on their analytics department. The idea was that he got on base a lot through walks and of course he hit home runs.  But Gallo really did neither in New York, and Gallo was also a strike out machine with no batting average to speak of.  He was a bum.  He was a bum before the Yankees signed him and he still is. But yet, that's what our analytics department got us.

Bellinger on the other hand is a typical, normal major leaguer with hot streaks and of course cold streaks... like an Aaron Judge or a Giancarlo Stanton or any other player out there.  So, what's my point? My point is analytics analysis is destroying this team because the Yankees are clearly looking at the wrong information.  And so, at this point... Cashman is skittish and not confident to make hard decisions.... decisions we desperately need to make a better Yankee team!

Yankee fans everywhere... this is gonna be the same off season as every off season.  The Yankees suck. They aren't going to better our team. Cashman isn't sure what's going on and to be honest... he doesn't know what he's doing.

The bottom line is the Yankees need Bellinger. Will we get him? I feel like we won't.  Stay tuned... it's still a dumpster fire.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! NOW STOP "BASHING" STANTON!

Happy Thanksgiving, BYB family! I hope your day has been filled with family, fun, great food and traditions. You may be stuffed right now, but hopefully not too full for another course of Yankee news. Good news is it's not so filling and far less calories.

In case you missed it, in your mad dash to prepare your Thanksgiving menu, Cameron Maybin longtime friend to Giancarlo Stanton thinks Stanton has been bullied in New York, read more HERE. Interesting little tidbit, Maybin went from former major leaguer to Public Relations specialist, or maybe psychologist. At any rate, it was an interesting little piece of insanity.

I really dislike these blurbs where other players feel the need to jump in and "rescue" someone else or just throw their two cents in, and that's what Maybin is doing.

"I've watched this guy year after year. He never jabs back at the fans or the criticism. He just keeps his head down and continues to try to work." Honestly....does that deserve a cookie? Congratulations, taking your licks (especially when you are underperforming) and taking the higher road is called being a professional. This is especially true when you are a role model to kids everywhere. If you want the criticism to stop, then do your job. It's as simple as that. Don't give New York fans and media a reason to make jabs and you won't have to dodge them.

Maybin takes it a step further, "I know he's had some unfortunate injury seasons, but I feel like if you're a New York fan, we've seen people who haven’t been able to handle the pressure and have folded. I think we have such a short memory. We don't take time to appreciate greatness. I just think the guy is a physical specimen…nobody wants to be hurt. I know he's hurt, but damn, can we appreciate what he has done? He's been one of the better playoff Yankees during the playoff struggles that they've had."

The Yankees have never apologized for having high expectations. The lights shine brighter in New York and the weight and responsibility of wearing that uniform is not a good fit for everyone. Maybin must have a different definition of appreciating greatness, which is interesting because he was a Yankee. He knows what the definition of greatness is to the organization and that is winning the World Series. Being a champion is greatness and that is what is appreciated. We all recognize and appreciate effort and know he has had some great moments. No one denies that, but this is not the place to recognize bright moments amongst mediocrity. The Yankees have been mediocre for too long.

So we hear you Maybin, you believe your friend is underappreciated and unjustly criticized. "I'd love to see him play in a place like Cincinnati…I want to see him play in the NL Central, a division that's a bandbox, somewhere where he might have a breath of fresh air," Maybin said. "He's been under scrutiny for years now. As a friend, I'd love to see him finish his career in a place where he's not getting bashed."
Would someone like to tell Maybin that there are a lot of Yankee fans out there that would also like to see Stanton play for Cincinnati? Or how about Detroit? Literally anywhere else, pick any other team. Honestly, if Stanton wanted to play in the NL Central, he could be a big boy and tell the Yankees that he would be open to a trade and would waive his no-trade clause and let the Yankees find someone else to pass some of that salary to. That won't be easy at all, but if the pinstripes are too heavy and the pressure is too much he could try and help his own cause. For the record, Maybin says Stanton hasn't said that at all.

Playing in New York isn't easy. The expectations here are not what you will find in Oakland. Sorry Maybin, but act like you have been here before and stop whining for your friend.

At any rate, there's your last course Yankee family. Enjoy the rest of your holiday!

THANKFUL FOR NEW LEADERSHIP— LET'S FILL MORE JOBS!

I have been following Brad Ausmus since his playing years. As a catcher, he is a thinker and knows how to anticipate plays on the field beyond looking at numbers. Could he be a manager-in-training? Well, yes, he's done it in some tough markets like Detroit and Los Angeles. His hire was one of some key moves the Yankees need to get done before the start of the 2024 season. So, yes, I am thankful for new leadership, but we have more jobs to fill.

"They’ll be among the many clubs bidding on 25-year-old Japanese pitching sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who was posted on Monday and figures to land a deal north of $200 million. The biggest need is outfielders, and Brian Cashman wants to add two. The expectation is that one will be a long-term plug-in left field that will cost significant dollars and the other will be a stopgap option for center field until Jasson Dominguez returns from Tommy John surgery sometime next summer. A quality bullpen upgrade is a possibility, as well," reported NJ.com.

But there were promises that real change would happen. And so far, nothing is indicating that the Yankees are going to blow things up. Sure Ausmus is a step in the right direction. But without players who can compete consistently and execute on the "changes" then the Yankees will be right where they were last year and the year before that...no where but the couch during the postseason excitement.

According to Randy Miller for NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, "The Yankees’ winter additions will be determined by payroll. If it’s at $235 million now, it could be above $280 million just adding Yamamoto and either Bellinger or Soto, will Steinbrenner allow that? If so, will Cashman be able to afford another outfielder, even a stopgap one? We’ll see what happens. So far, all we know is they’ll have a new bench coach, a new hitting coach and, at Aaron Boone’s recommendation, the minor leaguers will be bunting more." If you have the time to read the whole article where reporters are discussing their speculations, it is a fun read, but really does not get me any closer to feeling like the Yankees have a plan for preseason acquisitions.

I feel like the Yankees are throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what lands. The other side of this is that players have to want to come play for a team that has been absolutely miserable to watch. With the same makeup and more bunting can the Yankees really compete in a league where players are younger, more athletic and can execute with runners in scoring position? So the bottom line is this, the Yankees have a new bench coach and the best pitcher in Gerrit Cole and hitter in Aaron Judge in baseball. Who can compete around them? And how do the Yankees ensure they get them and can play them the way they need to be played? Let's fill more jobs and be intentional about it. Let's put together a team that we can all be thankful for come next Thanksgiving after a great 2024 season.

BRAD AUSMUS IS A SOLID YANKEE CHOICE!

 The Yankees did something right.

We needed a guy with major league managerial, coaching experience and we got it in Ausmus.  MLB.com writes of Ausmus:

"....managed the Tigers from 2014-17 and the Angels in 2019, going a combined 314-332 in those stints. He also served as the manager of Team Israel in the qualifiers of the World Baseball Classic in 2012, as an assistant for Team Israel in the 2023 WBC and as the Athletics' bench coach under manager Mark Kotsay in 2022.... Ausmus brings a wealth of experience gleaned from his 18 years as a big league catcher for the Astros, Padres, Tigers and Dodgers. Ausmus collected 1,579 hits and won three Gold Glove Awards during his career..."

We wanted credentials, we get it with Ausmus and not only that, but Brad also started out as a draft pick of the Yankees way back in 1987. Wikipedia writes:

"A 1987 draft pick of the New York Yankees, he chose to alternate between attending Dartmouth College and playing minor league baseball. "

And so, what does this all mean? Well for me, it means progress on that Yankee bench.  I was never a big fan of Carlos Mendoza. Ausmus brings more weight and hopefully able to sway Boone when Boone becomes complacent or just not good.  Also, and one can cross their fingers here, Ausmus can handle managing the New York Yankees if the Yanks are bad enough under Boone's direction in 2024 and Hal wants to fire the son of a bitch.  Ausmus has the experience, longevity in the game and is respected.  I like this move a lot.

Welcome Brad.  I'm looking forward to having you join us. We need your leadership, that is for sure.

DON'T WORRY... WE GOT YERRY DE LOS SANTOS

Season saved. Yanks are looking great.  Have I failed to mention all season that hitting was the Yankees problem? Oh, I didn't? Well, someone needs to tell Brian Cashman who is literally chipping away at lost soldiers in his way to duct tape this team together like every other Yankees off-season.  DOES NO ONE SEE THIS AS THE SAME AS ANY OTHER YEAR? AM I LIVING ON BIZARRO WORLD?  Well, don't worry, we just got another pitcher for "bullpen security".  We're good now.

The New York Post writes:

"The Yankees are adding a young arm to increase their bullpen depth.

Yerry De Los Santos, who spent the last two seasons with the Pirates, has reached agreement with the Yankees on a contract, according to his representatives from Epitome Sports Management, who announced the deal Monday on X, formerly known as Twitter.

De Los Santos, 25, appeared in 22 games last season for the Pirates and pitched to a 3.33 ERA."

I have no doubt that Los Santos can help. But also? Not what the Yankees need.

I'm so disenchanted by this Yankees front office.  Honestly? Do better.

YANKEES WILL LOSE OUT TO THE RANGERS FOR HADER

The way the season has gone, and now the off-season being slow and the Yankee front office being defiant and not accepting responsibility, I don't see a lot that's gonna happen to better this team.

I mean, I know what they're doing right now... they waited for Yoshinobu Yamamoto to post, and he did, and Cashman is now in some back room seeing how much money they have to try and get him in pinstripes. They will wheel out Hideki Matsui and Masahiro Tanaka to speak fondly to Yamamoto of the Yankees organization and then they will make a pitch, hoping to not be out bid.

And if they can get him, that would be great. If they can't, we wasted a ton of time.  Oh, and also, one Yamamoto does not make a successful Yankee off-season. They still have a ways to go to please the Yankee fan base, trust me. Remember we can't hit!!!

But hitting help is for another post. This post is about Josh Hader, a guy that the Yankees should absolutely go after, but a guy that they will not get because of non-aggressiveness and them putting all their eggs in the Yamamoto basket.  Inside the pinstripes writes:

"The Rangers should be prepared to pay. Reportedly, Hader and his agent are seeking to beat the five-year, $102 million deal that New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz signed last offseason."

And in that same article? Not a mention of the New York Yankees. Why? Great question.  By the way, if the Rangers are interested and they have the team they have and they can show Hader the money, there is no question that deal is sealed.  Hader to the Bronx will not happen.

Feels eerily like every other offseason in the Bronx, don't it?

THE YANKEES ARE "FAVORITES" TO SIGN CODY BELLINGER... SORT OF

The Yankees need to upgrade their offense in a big way this offseason. They could do that by adding Cody Bellinger to the roster. He's the biggest catch out there not named Shohei Ohtani and everyone's watching him and wondering where his new home is going to be.

Rumor has it HERE that the Yankees are favorites to woo Bellinger....but they aren't the only favorite. Yup, in fact the Yankees are supposed "co-favorites" for his services along with the San Francisco Giants. I guess we shouldn't be surprised, right? Last winter the Giants were also chasing after Aaron Judge so why not do it again this winter? Hopefully, it's the same outcome again.

Now the question is, how much will Bellinger actually get? I've seen some crazy and wide ranged predictions out there from 6 years at $150 million to 12 years and $250 million plus. Baseball contracts can be hard to predict anyways, but I am sure that right now Scott Boras is just loving the wide range of possibilities for his client.

I know some fans are not keen on adding Bellinger to the mix, but if we can get him on the lower end of that crazy contract spectrum range, I am game. The Yankees desperately need another lefty bat AND they need to get more athletic. Cody has some nice pop in his bat AND he's athletic. I can see him in the outfield with Judge, easily. Also, I really could see the Yankees liking him for his abilities at first base. We saw what happened last season to Anthony Rizzo so he only adds more options to a team that really needs them after the dumpster fire season we just had. Cody can hold down first base easily, and give DJ LeMahieu some breathing room, also.

I've always been a Cody fan. I like his family; they are good people. I am also a big fan of his father Clay who I was fortunate enough to interview 7 years ago, check it out EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: CLAY BELLINGER. I loved Clay as a Yankee. I loved the Home Run he robbed in the 2000 World Series, that will always be my favorite memory of him as a player. Now, I envision big plays like that for Cody just following in his footsteps....and it gives me chills.

The Yankees have a lackluster offense, and I think Cody could help get this flat team back on track. The Yankees have to do something, and Cody has Yankee makeup in his blood. This could work.... if the Yankees grow a brain and don't mess this up.
