HERE COMES THAT MICHAEL MORSE RUMOR...

Didn't we do this already? Didn't we here at Bleeding Yankee Blue lead the charge to wake up the Yankee world this off season and suggest that Morse may be the most perfect fit ever for the Yankees this off season? That's right, Michael Morse, a right handed bat with pop as well as experience in the outfield and first base? I was positive we were getting Michael Morse and then, what felt like in the dead of night, the Seattle Mariners swooped in and made a deal with the Nationals and that ship sailed. I was pissed then.

Not to recap... but let's.... What did we settle for? Do you remember? It was Juan Rivera. And what happened with that? He was released and we quickly signed Lyle Overbay, a first baseman who bats lefty.  Right... I know, the whole thing is wacky at this point.

Today, Pete Caldera of the Bergen Record has a nugget of a piece titled GM: We're Buyers, writing simply, "Cashman did not specify a type. 'We’re looking for guys who can help us,' he said. Seattle sluggers Kendrys Morales and Mike Morse are possible targets given the Yanks’ need."

That got me thinking, "Here we go again." Sure, I guess we really didn't know we'd need a righty with power, but looking back, we still kind of did and Morse would have been perfect then.  Now we are looking at this guy again... maybe... and if not, well, we better be.

Lookout Landing has a piece HERE explaining how Morse is a trade candidate writing, "... Today's entry into the trade candidates series is Michael Morse, who may represent the biggest question mark of all Mariner assets.... When he's on, he's on. Morse is a streaky player, but one capable of doing sizable damage at the plate when healthy. He has monster power, and barring further injuries, could hit 15+ homers after the break. His last (and only) healthy season in 2011, he posted a .390 wOBA with Washington. He can play multiple positions, though not particularly well. Morse has experience in both corner outfield spots, as well as first base..."

Hey look, Morse has also been hurt and unreliable at times, but I'll tell you what, I wanted "the Beast" in the Bronx in the off-season and he's better than what we have right now in our offense that's lacking. And look, I'm not saying we cut Overbay loose, we love that guy and he'd done great work for us this season (And we'll have a piece tomorrow breaking Overbay down), but I like Morse and I'll roll the dice on him.

If we hear anything more, we'll let you know... but right now... it's that time of year... the trade rumor season!

IT'S NOT A SURPRISE, IT'S YANKEE MAGIC

It’s funny.  Over the years there are guys that the Yankees collect that just provide this level of play that we hadn’t ever seen before, or, just when you thought a player’s baseball life was over, they turn it on when they button up the pinstripes.

For some reason, Shawn Chacon and Aaron Small come to mind immediately. 2 guys who had less than mediocre careers, who suddenly come to New York and raise the bar and play, or in their case, pitch wonderfully, right when we needed it most.

Enter 3 guys we thought were just filler when they were signed to the Yankees.  Lyle Overbay was a first baseman that was signed late, but the timing was right.  It just so happened that Mark Teixeira got hurt and with it, Juan Rivera was barely lighting it up as our first baseman fill in and that was obvious… he was an outfielder.  So we ditched the reunion with Rivera for a guy we needed… not to be an all-star, just to be a fill in.  Overbay’s fill in role has been wonderful.

Vernon Wells deal had been criticized because “who needs another broken down player.” Well, as my buddy said the other day…”Vernon Wells has a chip on his shoulder with the Los Angeles Angels’ name all over it.”  He’s right.  Since coming over to the Yankees, Wells has proved that he’s in fact NOT done and good for him. We signed Wells for next to nothing with the Angels picking up the most of his salary and he’s already done some pretty great things.

Travis Hafner’s only job on the Yankees is to hit home runs. Not field, not pitch, not even put on a glove… hit home runs… that’s it.  So far this season he has 6 home runs and a .286 average. He looks great at the plate, he looks comfortable and willing and able to stand in the box whenever we need him to. Why? Because he knows his role and wants to please.  Remember, this is a guy that gets hurt a lot and there is deep concern that we can’t mess with this guy’s health, so, we take him out of the humidor in the dugout every time he’s needed and when he comes to the plate, he knows he has 1 job… mash the ball… that’s it.

3 guys, 3 “broken down players”... rejuvenated and ready to execute. Why? They're New York Yankees… that’s the difference. You gotta love it.

GUESS WHERE JUAN RIVERA ENDED UP?

Juan Rivera got a job! I'm glad. I felt bad that the guy was busting ass this Spring for the Yanks and as soon as a real first baseman in Lyle Overbay became available, he was dropped like a bad habit.  Hey, that's baseball, but the timing was right and it appears that everything has worked out for everyone now.

Juan Rivera has signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks.  You can read that report from MLB.com's Tyler Emerick HERE. Emerick says: "The D-backs signed outfielder Juan Rivera to a Minor League contract on Tuesday. The 12-year veteran was last with the Yankees in Spring Training before being released.

In 109 games with the Dodgers last season, Rivera hit .244 with nine homers and 47 RBIs."

Boom... there you go.

SHADES OF 2009... MINUS THE PIE

Another comeback win in the Bronx... this time Lyle Overbay put us ahead. I'm realizing how important it is to have that first baseman replacement there for Mark Teixeira... Overbay was a smarter choice than Juan Rivera, and the timing was right.

The Yankees swept the Blue Jays in 4 games and I'm not the type to brag, and I won't, but where did all those Blue Jays fans go who were telling me on Twitter that the Yankees season was over before it even began? Again, I'm not bragging, but I did say not the rule the Yankees out, just let the season play out, that's all I said and that's what's happening.

Brennan Bosech cranked out a home run today in the 2nd inning. That was all the Yankees did offensively until Lyle Overbay hit a 2 run shot in the 7th. That put them ahead and just like clockwork, Mariano Rivera shut the door.

Final Score: Yankees 3 - Blue Jays 2 and a 4 game sweep.

There are some nice comebacks this season, real nice and it reminds me a lot of 2009... minus the pie of course.

THE REASON JUAN RIVERA WAS RELEASED

Juan Rivera had a good run this spring hitting .305. Juan Rivera is a nice guy and Juan Rivera could have been put on the 40 man roster by the Yankees, but according to Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News (HERE), the Yankees chose to release Juan Rivera instead.

Look, it's business. The real story on why this happened is easy to understand. Trust me, as a fan, you can understand why Rivera was released. The biggest thing was Juan Rivera was not a true first baseman and Lyle Overbay is, and has better experience there. Rivera was the square in a round hole at first base for the Yankees.  Overbay is round... you know what I mean?

Also, you need to understand that signing Vernon Wells pretty much starts to eliminate a spot for Rivera in the outfield as well. I mean, how many outfielders can the Yankees actually have? We already have Vernon, Ichiro Suzuki and Brett Gardner. Then, Ben Francisco, who is solid. You also have Thomas Neal  who I believe will be with us in our minor league system and Brennan Boesch can play the outfield too.  I just don't know if we really need more.

And, if we did, then we'll call up Melky Mesa or Ronnier Mustelier. In a nutshell, what seemed like a sure thing for Juan Rivera turned into a guy underwater breathing out a straw. He's was suffocating and eventually got snuffed out with the Yankees last minute moves in acquiring Wells and Overbay.

I like Rivera and he did well for us, but it's clear the Yankees have other plans and the timing worked out when first baseman Lyle Overbay showed up.  Rivera ended up losing out to lack of experience at first and overcrowding in the outfield, that's it!  One thing that sucks is Rivera put in his time. Unfortunately though, he ran out of time and with Ben Francisco and Lyle Overbay making the club, again... Juan Rivera is replaceable.

I wish Rivera the best. The timing was wrong, but he'll land on his feet somewhere. Unfortunately there won't be a sequel to the "Juan Rivera is a Yankee" flick anytime soon.

PHIL HUGHES WILL START SEASON ON THE DL

This is actually NOT the X-Ray of Phil Hughes' bulging disk or spine or anything.  To be honest, sometimes if I'm busy, I can't get to a computer to document what the Yankees are doing for you. I know you respect that, and if you don't, get over yourself... we're doing the best we can here at BYB. So who's spine is it? Who knows... I needed an image to get you clicking on this story... hopefully it worked.

Truth be told, the report out of Yankeeland is that Phil Hughes will "likely" start the season on the Disabled List.  What else is new? Derek Jeter starting the season on the DL? Oh yeah, that is true.  Well, at least we have Mark Teixeira. Oh wait, he's hurt too.

But at least he tweeted that he's recovering fine, read HERE.  No worries, we have Lyle Overbay at first, or Juan Rivera... or something.

Nevermind, Curtis Granderson is healthy right? Um.  Well, I'm sure he feels healthy but we're in what, the fourth week of his 10 week recovery sentence? Bah.

Girardi doesn't need to commit.  The Yankees will let it happen because health is the most important thing, especially in April.  So ladies and gentlemen... expect Hughes to start on the DL.  No real news here except for the fact that this injury bug is annoying already...

THE VERNON WELLS TRADE IS BIZARRO

As the Yankees and Angels wait for the acquisition of Vernon Wells is approved, read HERE, There is no doubt, I have questions.

Look, as a Yankee fan, I just don't get the Vernon Wells trade.  Sure, you can look Wells and his Spring Training numbers, like my bud Travis Willis commented to me late last night, and tell me just how important this trade is, and I see the numbers, I get the point, and you know what? I understand and I respect that opinion, believe me. Willis wrote this below:

Love that opinion on Wells, and trust me, if those numbers translate to the rest of the Yankees season, I'm the first guy at the gate. But from my own perspective, it's the Spring, and it's 14 games and I am not so sure a small batch like that matters. I could be wrong... and I hope I am, but that's me.

(In Photo: Ben Francisco)But the Yankees confuse me... that's all.  Let me tell you what does matter in my opinion.  What does matter is what the fans think, and many of us, the majority of us are scratching our heads wondering why guys like Melky Mesa, or Ronnier Mustelier, or even a Ben Francisco or Juan Rivera or Thomas Neal or Brennan Boesch aren't being used?  Players, that are trying to earn a spot all spring who will soon either be released or moved to the minors to make room for Vernon Wells.  It's strange, it really is.

In other words, if the Yankees plan was to go on the cheap and get the best bang for our buck, then why are the Yankees now willing to pay $13 million for a 34 year old outfielder? Is it because they don't have to pay $42 million and it's a steal? I guess.  Again, I'm asking, I'm not pissed, I'm not angry... I'm just confused... it's Bizarro, much like the bad guy Superman used to fight in the comics... it's backwards.

The Yankees and Brian Cashman are continually keeping us on our toes.  The Yankees and Brian Cashman have made it pretty clear that they were going on the cheap to make it under the $189 million, 2014 cap.  Hal also mentioned that they weren't "done yet" and I guess this is what they meant. But Vernon Wells is not the Vernon Wells that I used to love with Toronto.  Vernon Wells is not a franchise player anymore.  Vernon Wells is a 34 year old outfielder that can't move around as well as a Melky Mesa, or even a Thomas Neal.

What Wells has done in his career is rake, but can he do it these days? An important question. Can he contribute when we really need it? If he can't, are you really going to go out and get a Vernon Wells Yankee jersey? Is he the merchandise player the Yankees really need? Will we rally if he can't do his job?

Again, I'm a fan with questions. I'm saying this move is bizarre. I am saying it's weird and under the radar, and a surprise and all of that.  If Wells comes over and the deal is done and he fits in nicely, I'm "Team Wells", believe me. No one wants the Yankees to win more than me, but I just can't wrap my head around this move... can you?

VERNON WELLS TO THE YANKEES IS INEVITABLE

 Update from Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports HERE: The Yankees will pay less than $10 million over 2 years of the money owed to Wells.  Angels will pay $32 million of his $42 million contract.

This thing is moving quickly...

Here's a question... Why couldn't we just stick with Melky Mesa? Just asking.

I know you've read it all over the Internet, but it's worth me reporting it on BYB right now. The Yankees are close to a deal to acquire Vernon Wells, a 34 year old outfielder from the Los Angeles Angels. You heard me right.  Look, my opinion on this is simple. If the Yankees didn't sign Ben Francisco or Juan Rivera or Thomas Neal, I would understand this... but now, just 1 week before the 1st game of the 2013, I don't get it.  That being said... it's going to happen and soon.

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News tweets HERE that the deal "will get done."  I am dying to know who the hell the Yankees are going to give up.  Let's hope I'm not going to be heartbroken.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.com HERE, tweets that this all depends on a physical.

YANKEE RUMORS: SANCHEZ, CROSBY & OVERBAY

We all know that the Yankees have "hinted" that they are "not done yet."  We have heard Hal Steinbrenner say it.  We have noticed Brian Cashman making minor moves, but not "Yankee type" moves that we're used to.  That being said, they are trying to better the club as we are just a week or so away from Opening day.

The most recent report of trying to get extra corner infield help comes from Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, HERE, who, doesn't actually know if the guys he suggests are available, but "wonders".  Like for instance, he suggests Gaby Sanchez of the Pittsburgh Pirates.   I guess this is kind of like me who wrote that now that guys like Bobby Crosby and Dallas McPherson were released, read HERE and HERE, they would be available too.

The difference is those guys are considered free agents and really are available.  Anyway... I'm sure the Yankees are looking at everyone is my point, I'm not quite sure Heyman's helping, but whatever. It's an educated guess and he's a baseball insider... I'm just a blogger... but all ideas makes sense.

Nick Carardo of the Boston Globe reports (HERE) that the Yankees have actually scouted Lyle Overbay. I find that appealing believe it or not. According to Cafardo: "Tuesday is the big day for Lyle Overbay. He has an opt-out in his contract Tuesday and right now, barring a big couple of games (he was in the lineup today vs. the Blue Jays) he probably would make the Red Sox.

If the Red Sox don't elect to keep him on the major league roster but want to send him to the minors, they have to pay him a $100,000 bonus as required by the new collective bargaining agreement.

But it appears Overbay will have other options.

The Yankees may need a lefthanded compliment to Juan Rivera at first base. Yankee scouts have been watching Overbay closely."

Now, truth be told, I have no problem giving Overbay a shot, but let's be realistic. I just don't know if the Red Sox would be willing to give up anyone to the Yankees.  Same thing goes for the Yankees giving up guys to the Red Sox...it ain't happening.  But we'll see, the Sox may think Overbay is damaged goods. I guess we wait until Tuesday to find out.

Just know this everyone... the Yankees may pick up a few pieces to finalize the puzzle, but I just don't see that spectacular name and you guys are smart enough to know that as well. 

That being said, things in Spring Training are slowly coming together for our Yankees and we are molding a team, whomever they may be, for the 2013 season.  Go with it, because the games are going to soon matter.... and I can't wait.

BYB READERS WANT JESUS MONTERO BACK!

So there it is.  We did a poll around a month ago after a very depressing off season of not signing a top player that made Yankee fans say, “You know what? That’s an awesome signing!”  Instead, there were a lot of guys that combined, could be a terrific player, but as an individual, we’re rolling the dice.  Matt Diaz has already been signed and released by the Yankees and Dan Johnson and Juan Rivera aren’t exactly lighting it up.  So I had to know… since some players have left New York, be it free agency or trades or whatever over the past 7 years, if you had a chance to get 1 guy back, who would it be?   

There were 9 players on the list.  I left Nick Swisher off the list, and maybe I should have kept him on it.  The reason why was because I didn’t have any indication from Yankee brass that he was coming back because of his free agency year and so, it was a decision I made. But the reality was, that probably wasn’t fair because believe it or not, as far as write-in votes go, Nick Swisher received 12 votes.  So, I apologize to the BYB readers, but thanks for keeping me in check, with comments and emails, I appreciate it.  Anyway, here are the results of that poll:

 

93 people voted and Jesus Montero was the top of the heap with 31 votes, or 33%.  Losing Montero was like a punch to the gut when he was traded. Probably because there was really no chatter about the Yankees ever wanting to trade him and then... it just happened. To me, Montero leading in this poll made sense.

 Next up, receiving 18 votes was Raul Ibanez.  Ibanez was the post season hero for the Yankees and right around Christmas time, it was clear that the Yankees were going to re-sign Ibanez.  Shockingly, that never happened and Ibanez signed with the Mariners because the Yankees waited to long to make an offer.  That spawned a rant that will be read on BYB for years to come… read YANKEE FANS REVOLT: "ENOUGH'S ENOUGH!" for context on that. 

Chris Dickerson and Russell Martin each got 13 votes a piece, a tie.  Both guys contributed in their own ways and when both guys left after the season, Martin by choice, Dickerson by force, it was sad to see.  Again, Martin never got an offer from the Yankees, a surprise by many of us.  We all knew Dickerson would bounce back, he has the talent and always contributed.  He was a good soldier.  By the way, read EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: CHRIS DICKERSON if you haven’t already. He's on the Orioles now.

Next was good ol’ Nick Swisher with 12 write-in votes… Not too shabby for a guy I left off the list on purpose.  I guess I was thinking too hard.   I apologize again.  

And with 11 votes was Eric Chavez. Chavez did some great stuff while in New York and it was sad to see him leave to go to Arizona. Again, and I hate harping on this, but the Yankees didn’t really engage him and they let him walk.

You can check out the other voting as well, but I must say, you gotta feel alittle bad for George Kontos and Hector Noesi… big fat zeroes for them.  Oh well, life goes on. 

So there you have it, Jesus Montero is your guy!  Montero is the 1 player you’d like to have back if you could, and I happen to agree with you.  It would have made for some fun times in the Yankees catching situation right now, I’ll tell you that.

WILL THE YANKEES PURSUE BOBBY CROSBY?

Just a quick note... and not one that I want to bring you. That being said, it's one, that if you wear the thinking cap of the Yankee brass right now... you have a framework for the making of a bunch of players who come together with the same goal, but when you look at them on paper, they seem like a bunch of misfits. Am I right? Dan Johnson? Juan Rivera? Brennan Boesch?  You feel me so far?

If I'm the Yankees, I now pursue newly released Bobby Crosby.  Not because he's good, but because he's 33 and cheap.

Yes, Bobby Crosby has been released by the Milwaukee Brewers just hours ago, read HERE, and again, it is my feeling as a Yankee fan knowing everything I know and feel about my team right now, that we will at least sniff around the hydrant of Bobby Crosby.  Why? Because he's unemployed and he's vulnerable and knowing the Yankees, they are thinking they can get him at next-to-nothing to fill-in at first base for an ailing Mark Teixeira.  Plus, they already tried with Derrek Lee and Scott Rolen and they are not coming to the Bronx.  At least Crosby is closer to baseball right now than they are.

Why am I posting this? I'm doing it because I want to jinx it.  I am hoping if I do this, they WON'T pursue Bobby Crosby.  No offense to Bobby, I'm sure he's a great teammate... I just want something else.

BEN FRANCISCO SIGNS WITH THE YANKEES

Quick update on the outfield competition in Yankeeland.  It's being announced that the Yankees have signed Ben Francisco to a minor league deal.  As the Star Ledger says (HERE), "Brian Cashman said. '... we’re going to take a look at him.'   The Yankees considered Francisco as a non-roster invitee before the season began. He opted for Cleveland -- which signed players like Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn, winnowing Francisco's playing time... He’ll vie for playing time here against players like Juan Rivera, Matt Diaz, Zoilo Almonte and Ronnier Mustelier."

I like it. Throw them all into a pot and see who comes out on top.  Go for it.

DON'T PEE IN THE POOL

With Mark Teixeira out for 8 to 10 weeks, read HERE, many have gone into full panic mode in Yankeeland.  I'm not yet. An Opening Day pitch has not been thrown yet... it's the Spring. I just can't get crazy about it yet. I will tell you that the idea of certain dudes internally already available for 1st or 3rd has diminished.  

Yes, we have Kevin Youkilis, and he'll fill in for Alex Rodriguez, but we lost Nick Swisher and Eric Chavez, 2 guys that would be have been great at first base in Tex's absence.   No bother... we can't go back in time, what's done is done. We don't have them and no one would have predicted this.

Is Dan Johnson the answer at first base? He may have to be.  Will Juan Rivera also contribute there? Sure, but we may also need him in the outfield.  Questions, questions and luckily for me, I don't have to come up with the answers, the Yankees do.

Brian Cashman isn't too excited about the free agents that can fill in either by the way.  He was asked about it and as you can see from Mark Feinsand of the Daily News's Tweet below, Cashman's statement is obnoxious:

Now, Carlos Lee and Aubrey Huff are out there as possible "plug-ins" for the Yankees,  this is true.  After all ,they are still free agents. But the reality is, they either need to suck it up and just make a phone call to Cash and tell them that they'd be happy to sign on, OR they should just turn their back on the Yankees and tell Cashman to scratch.

Cashman meant nothing by it his "pee in the pool" statement.  He was trying to be provocative, and he believes in what we have internally. But the reality is, that statement is insulting and cuts deep if you're a player still on the junk heap.  Me personally, I don't see how this Tex situation is as major as everyone else thinks it is.  Sure, without him, Granderson and Alex, we lose a shit load of home runs, but there are 2 things we can do... play small ball and manufacture runs the way baseball should sometimes be played, or the Yankees need to go out and get a big bopper or... 2.   Sitting on the sidelines questioning what can be done, is no way to go through life... the Yankees need to act.  The question is, what will Cashman do?  

Quick, someone get Giancarlo Stanton on the phone...not only will that provide stability in the outfield, but we'd also have more options at first. I know... I know, I'm silly. But the idea of Stanton in pinstripes would be glorious.

NO GRANDERSON? NO PROBLEM

It's official.  Look for the Yankees to look internally for power help to replace Curtis Granderson who is out 10 weeks with a broken forearm. (Read TOUGH BREAK FOR GRANDERSON.) That means, no Johnny Damon, no Alfonso Soriano (I actually thought that idea was silly), no Ken Phleps and no, my 10 year old is not available.

Instead, according to Yahoo Sports, "The Yankees will take a good look at the outfielders currently in camp before searching outside the organization. Veterans Matt Diaz and Juan Rivera are the frontrunners to see time in left field, though youngsters Zoilo Almonte, Melky Mesa and Ronnier Mustelier will also have an opportunity to compete."

Read HERE. In a nutshell, what does this mean? I means it's Spring Training and we'll figure it out and still stay on the cheap path the New York Yankees have been on for months. If it doesn't work, we look elsewhere.

In other words... "We'll stay," as Austin Powers once said... we have the talent. Everyone needs to calm down.
