BRENNAN BOESCH JUST FOUND A GIG

Just wanted to give you info on former Yankee Brennan Boesch.  Hardball Talk's Aaron Gleeman writes some good news for the Boesch family.  The dude found a job.

Gleeman writes: "Boesch has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Reds...This year he played at Triple-A for the Angels, hitting .332 with 25 homers and a 1.017 OPS in 95 games, but failed to produce in a brief big-league stint."

Who knows... maybe he makes the big club. Maybe he contributes.  I always liked Boesch... good luck to a good guy.

BRENNAN BOESCH GOT DUMPED

Alittle note just to have in your back pocket for the next water cooler discussion when your buddy says to you, "What the hell happened to Brennan Boesch?" You'll know now...

The last we heard from Boesch, he had a shoulder injury and in the minors.  Now it appears that the Yankees have released him.  You can read that in CBSSports.com, HERE.  Dayn Perry says, "The Yankees' decision to release Brennan Boesch is a matter of timing, not talent," Boesch's agent Brodie Van Wagenen told CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. "Brennan's rehab on his shoulder is going well and he expects to be full strength and able to make a meaningful contribution to a major league team in August."

I mean, it's his agent, he has to say that so when Boesch gets better, someone will sign him.  I always liked Boesch, but the poor guy just didn't catch on in the Bronx. 

Oh, and leave it to Jon Heyman to somehow get his name into Dayn Perry's report. I mean, are you kidding me?  Unbelievable. He's like Forrest Gump... except annoying.

THE FRIDAY DUMP OF CODY EPPLEY

News out now is that Cody Eppley has been released from his minor league contract with the Yankees. You can read about it HERE. According to YESNetwork.com's Lou DiPietro:

"Eppley's release was one of a series of roster moves the RailRiders made Wednesday to accommodate outfielder Brennan Boesch's reassignment from the MLB roster, and the promotions of RHP Matt Daley and infielder Walter Ibarra from Double-A Trenton.

Because he was not on the 40-man roster, Eppley is free to sign anywhere right away, and by releasing him and LHP Clay Rapada, who was let go on Tuesday, the Yankees organization lost a pair of specialists who made a combined 129 appearances for the Major League bullpen in 2012."

Truth be told, the last time I even realized we still had Cody Eppley was last Sunday when then Yankee, Clay Rapada tweeted that he was having breakfast with Eppley and Josh Spence.  Gee. I hope Spence isn't next...

TEIXEIRA, YOUKILIS & THE YANKEE LOG JAM

With the imminent return of some injured Yankees, including Mark Teixeira and KevinYoukilis, the team faces an interesting dilemma. What in the world will they do with Lyle Overbay and the rest of the Yankees who filled in for them? The Yankees, who were brilliant in replacing injured stars with a mix of rookies and available veterans, now have to figure out the impending logjam that will be their active roster. Let us take a walk around the Yankee lineup.

The easiest problem to solve will probably be third base. Assuming Kevin Youkilis’ back is completely healthy, he will probably take over at third. David Adams, who has shown signs of a bright future, will probably go to the bench. Again, this assumes that Youkilis is healthy and stays healthy. This is not an easy assumption to make, given recent history. He came to the Yankees with a reputation for being fragile, and he will have missed more than 2/3 of the season by the end of this week. The Yankees need him to be productive, so we will probably see him get regular rest and David Adams may still get lots of playing time. 

The problem getting the most airtime with Yankee announcers is the first base problem. Mark Teixeira is about to return, and Lyle Overbay has not played a position other than first base in the majors. His clutch hitting has gotten the attention of the fans and Yankees management. It has gotten enough attention that the Yankees are rumored to have considered him playing the outfield. He has 60 games played in the outfield in minor league ball, the last time being when he was only 24 years old in 2001. That is a long time. This assumes that he would even want to switch positions. It also assumes that Mark Teixeira is ready to take on every duties at first. This will probably be another case of the injured player getting lots of rest while his substitute fills in. If they want Overbay’s bat in the lineup, they could always play him at designated hitter. Which brings us to the next problem.

 

So, who is going to be the everyday designated hitter? Good question. Travis Hafner has been the almost-everyday DH, and he has not played a field position since 2007. With a .373 OBP and a .869 OPS (as of this writing), his bat would be sorely missed in the lineup. Nevertheless, since he cannot play the field, we may be better off trading him. We are also carrying four potential outfielders in Vernon Wells, Brett Gardner, Ichiro Suzuki, and Brennan Boesch. Boesch is clearly the odd man out, but with two other strong candidates for the DH spot, it is going to get hard to justify the $1.5M the Yankees are paying him. He seems to be a likely candidate for the exit door.

The problem gets worse once some of the other regulars start coming back. Derek Jeter’s return is probably the simplest problem to solve. There is an opportunity cost for Jayson Nix as starter, but he would just resume the backup role he had prior to Jeter’s injury. Curtis Granderson, slated to return in late June or early July, would add to the outfielder/DH logjam. Following on the heels of Granderson’s return, the Yankees expect Alex Rodriguez back after the All-Star break. 

At that point, where do you put Kevin Youkilis? Which all begs the question, in mid-July, of what to do with four premier outfielders, two premier first basemen, two premier third basemen, an everyday designated hitter, and a 25-man roster where the manager likes to carry lots of pitchers (13 as of this writing). Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman have some tough choices to make.

Some have suggested that the Yankees set up a blockbuster trade for some of our replacement players once the regulars return. This seems unlikely to work. If the Yankees were to get some serious talent, the teams that would be giving them up tend to want young, inexpensive talent. The talent we would be giving up is neither young nor inexpensive. If they can pull something off that would really benefit the team – like where we get an ace starter – we will tip our collective hat off to Mr. Cashman. As well, we cannot forget how fragile some of our regulars are, so we will have to keep some of the backups around.

At the end of the day, the Yankees will probably mix and match players and put the best team possible on the field. If it were up to yours truly, we would get rid of Hafner and Boesch and rotate the other players in and out. Hafner cannot play the field, and we have other DH options. Boesch just is not putting up the number to justify keeping him around. I would trade them for whatever I could get or release them outright. Nevertheless, we can only guess what the brain trust will do. Whatever happens, it will sure be fun to watch.

BAFFLED IN THE BRONX

If there is any positive to come out of tonight's game for the New York Sports writers, it's that the Yankees are in a slump, the same slump the Yanks were predicted to be in by guys like Jim Bowden of ESPN and others.  The Yankees forgot how to hit against a Mets team that really has no business being competitive at all, but they are and they are sucking the life out of my club.  Tonight was a clear cut case of Yankeeland in a panic.  If  you read through the Twitter feeds and Facebook comments, it's mass hysteria.  The Yankees have lost 4 in a row and you have to wonder what is going on right now. But one thing you can do yet is blame Joe Girardi or Brian Cashman.  So far this year, those 2 have done wonders and have done so much more than we expected.  No... you can't blame them, blame our team. We're in a slump plain and simple.

Look, when the Yankees lose, everyone freaks out. Tonight for example, when Brennan Boesch went to field a ball literally just making it over the wall in right field, Twitter lit up. "Boesch sucks" and "Why is he feeling for the wall?"  I don't know, I found it to be a pretty decent effort, yet, this comment came up after I merely asked why debate the Boesch stretch, it was close:

Now, not to be a total dick, because I'm not that kind of guy, but Boesch was just inches away from catching that ball. Not too shabby, but when the Yankees are down, all Yankee fans get hysterical and it's amplified big time.  I didn't mean to single out Mark with that tweet above, but we all just need to chill.

For the record, here's a still of Boesch and his jump, clearly not 4 inches off the ground. Sarcastic or not, you trying playing professional ball backing up toward the wall, no easy task. I'm happy to come to Boesch's defense on that one and furthermore, that home run didn't change the game... the Yanks were down by 5 at that point.

And how about this Tweet from Kevin Kernan about Ichiro:

Look, we all can agree, Ichiro is not having a good season, but done? I remember they all said that about Derek Jeter when he batted .270, but that didn't last.  My point is players slow down, but players, really good players re-adjust and Ichiro will do the same.

But enough about that panic...how about this spectacle we call a game? The Yankees were lifeless tonight all around. David Phelps lasted 0.1 tonight. That's not a typo.  He gave up 4 hits and 5 runs before getting the hook.  Adam Warren followed Preston Claiborne and he gave up 3 additional runs. After that, mop up guy Ivan Nova pitched 5 innings and only gave up 1 run. 

The hitting wasn't great and it broke down like this:

The Yankees didn't strike until the 4th. Brennan Boesch homered in the and it was a solo shot. In the 6th, Boesch came through again singling and Travis Hafner scored. Then Jayson Nix knocked in a run. In the 9th, Robinson Cano knocked in Brett Gardner.  I mean look, in the end, the Yanks made a push, but you can't exactly dig out of a 9 run hole in 1 inning. Not impossible... but doubtful.

Final Score: Mets 9 - Yankees 4.

Look, truth be told, I'm not happy, I'm annoyed, but this is why baseball is such a great game.  As a season unfolds, things happen. Teams win, teams lose, teams slump but if you think about it, the Yankees have been good this season, some of it luck, some of it talent and all of it an exciting journey.  This is the Yankees first slump all season.  It's part of this great game, but now, the Yanks need to get themselves together, think about how to win and go out tomorrow and do it.  That time is now.

GUESS WHERE BRENNAN BOESCH JUST WENT?

Lou DiPietro of YESNetwork.com (HERE) reported that Brennan Boesch has been shipped to AAA and to get some more arms in the bullpen, the Yankees brought up Brett Marshall.  DiPietro writes:

"Marshall, 23, was the Yankees’ sixth-round pick in 2008, and was 2-2 with a 4.60 ERA in six starts for the RailRiders this season...

...Counting Game 1 (Indians series) of the doubleheader, Boesch hit .209 with two home runs and five RBI in 20 games with the Yankees, including a 1-for-4 performance as the starting right fielder in Game 1..."

WELL, WELL, WELLS

Vernon Wells had a big night last night in Colorado. He hit a 2 run homer in the first inning and scored the game winning run in the 9th on an infield hit by Brennan Boesch.  But not only that, he made a perfect defensive play in the bottom of the 9th to help preserve the Yankees 3-2 lead over the Rockies... and then the Yankees won, just like that!

That defensive play was key, because he wasn't in the outfield at this point, he was at 3rd base... that's right, 3rd.  According to the New York Times, "Girardi had no more infielders for the bottom of the ninth. He considered using catcher Austin Romine at third, but decided to go with Wells, whom he had seen take ground balls at third during batting practice earlier this season. Wells said he takes grounders as a way to keep his hands active and to practice catching bouncing balls. And he uses his own glove, a small outfielder’s mitt...  In the bottom of the inning, Wells said he got chills after the brief infield warm-up when he was able to throw the ball to closer Mariano Rivera... With one out, Carlos Gonzalez hit a bouncer to Wells’s left, and he threw a strike to first baseman Lyle Overbay."  Read HERE.

Good for him.  The Yanks put a good win together. Only 3 other Yanks had hits last night...Brett Gardner, Chris Nelson and Brennan Boesch.  Wells had 3.

David Phelps started and went 6 innings and allowed 3 hits and 2 runs.  David Robertson got the win. Mariano Rivera got the save...Save number 12. 

Final: Yankees 3 - Rockies 2.

YANKEES WIN AFTER YESTERDAY'S HICCUP

What makes a team great? Consistency.  Consistency to win.  Sure, once in a while a team can lose a game, but in the end, if they win a series and every series in a season for instance, they make the playoffs.  If they feed off of each other, if they push each other to do better, or win after a loss like they did tonight, things happen.  Winning happens and consistency happens.  That's baseball... that's my New York Yankees.

Yesterday was forgotten and the Yankees won tonight and I'm not going to nail every highlight but I'll tell you this, they looked good.  Hiroki Kuroda is 4-1 this season and that's not by mistake.  He's actually good although, I need to tell you that he struggled early but figured out ways to escape danger. That's the sign of a good pitcher. Tonight he went 7 innings, allowed only 4 hits and stuck out 8.  It's also important to note that he walked 4.  David Robertson and Shawn Kelley each gave up 2 earned runs each, but they Astros only scored 4 to the Yankees mighty 7.

Lyle Overbay homered tonight again, this time it was his 4th of the season. Travis Hafner was 3 for 4 tonight with 3 RBIs and a walk.  Even Brennan Boesch beat out a fielders choice! It's the little things that add up to wins. These are the guys that are putting together a run in pinstripes worth remembering. 

The final tonight: Yankees 7 - Astros 4.

I'm tired, but I'm happy.  The Yankees won and now I head home after a long day.  Sleep tight... don't let the bed bugs bite.

SHADES OF 2009... MINUS THE PIE

Another comeback win in the Bronx... this time Lyle Overbay put us ahead. I'm realizing how important it is to have that first baseman replacement there for Mark Teixeira... Overbay was a smarter choice than Juan Rivera, and the timing was right.

The Yankees swept the Blue Jays in 4 games and I'm not the type to brag, and I won't, but where did all those Blue Jays fans go who were telling me on Twitter that the Yankees season was over before it even began? Again, I'm not bragging, but I did say not the rule the Yankees out, just let the season play out, that's all I said and that's what's happening.

Brennan Bosech cranked out a home run today in the 2nd inning. That was all the Yankees did offensively until Lyle Overbay hit a 2 run shot in the 7th. That put them ahead and just like clockwork, Mariano Rivera shut the door.

Final Score: Yankees 3 - Blue Jays 2 and a 4 game sweep.

There are some nice comebacks this season, real nice and it reminds me a lot of 2009... minus the pie of course.

THE TIPPING POINT OF WINNING

Here’s the deal, if you are winning, you are popular and everyone wants you but if you are losing, well, now that’s a whole different kind of situation.  Of course we all want to win, but what if we can’t?  I mean, what if the infrastructure is not strong enough, the ingredients not powerful enough and the environment just can’t support winning? 

In 2002, The New Yorker magazine award winning author Malcolm Gladwell wrote (HERE) The Tipping Point:  How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, and our world has never been the same.  In his book, Gladwell discusses how trends stick and epidemics spread.  He also brings to light a keen understanding of what and even who makes ideas stick.  A Tipping point, defines Gladwell, is the “name given to that moment in an epidemic when a virus reaches critical mass. It's the boiling point. It's the moment on the graph when the line starts to shoot straight upwards.” 

So what’s the Yankees’ tipping point of winning- what makes that graph gradually move up?  I say the Tipping Point for the Yankees, the one thing that keeps the Yankees going with enduring strength, despite bad break after bad break, injury after injury, and loss after loss is the fact that they were born to win. 

162 games- that’s what Major League Baseball presents to teams each year.  Some games are on the road and some back at home.  Some games are played in the rain, others in the snow and still others is in the sweltering heat.  Each game builds upon the next and what goes wrong one day, can go absolutely right the next.

As level-headed New York Mets manager Terry Collins continues to preach to both his players and the media is, “We’ve got a long way to go,” Collins said after the Mets beat the Padres, 11-2, on Opening Day. “We know we’re going to have some ups and we know we’re going to have some downs. But the one thing we’re trying to do is establish some credibility amongst our fans -- get them excited, as they were last year. But we want to finish it off this year. We want to make sure we continue to play as consistently in the second half as we do the first half." (HERE)

The difference between the Yankees and all of the rest of the clubs out there is that the Yankees are consistently in it- they do make their fans excited year after year, they do have credibility, they do finish what they started closing down the East year after year and although Derek Jeter won’t be back for sometime, no one seems to know what’s going on with CC Sabathia and his velocity woes and it seems like it will be a long haul for Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson, the Yankees still tip- they are still an epidemic, they are still making a difference.

Yeah, we got guys like Hafner, Overbay, Wells and Boesch who we probably never thought would done a day in pinstripes, but this scrappy bunch is getting it done.  Would I like more wins, yes, but from the standpoint of being contagious, being infectious, threatening to win, threatening to score and just being the Yankees, I’m happy I am a Yankee fan because each year there’s an opportunity to be number one.

I mean who wants to be a Cubs fan, Mets fan, Pirates fan, Jays fan, Indians fan, Astros fan?  They don’t win and if they do, they don’t consistently- they do the fake out; make you believe that they will win, that this will be the year, but in the end, they bring up the cellar and leave you miserable in September.

I say for the Yankees, they were born to win and the games tip in their favor, overall.  The Yankees are legendary, they are epidemic, they are infectious, and they are ours.  Everyday is another chance to win when the boys are on the field.  And we have lots and lots of games to go!

THE PRIDE OF THE YANKEES

None of us expected this.  Well, let me rephrase that… True Yankee fans, believers… you expected this.  Many were skeptical.  I mean, many thought “How could Brian Cashman do this to us?” when it came to doing or "not doing" a thing this off season.  The New York Sports Media was all over this team. "The Yankees are old", "the Yankees are done."  Remember Sean Hartnett's piece on CBS Sports? "2013 Brings Uncertainty For Aging Yankees." Well, of course it brought "uncertainty", it was written before the season started, Silly! Remember ESPN's Jim Bowden's prediction that the Yankees would be in last place this season? That was in his piece, 10 bold predictions for 2013 season, HERE. Come on now.  I mean, after all this talk of "old" Yankees, I'd say we're doing OK.

Look, I see there is a change in Yankeeland. We don’t spend like we used to, I get that.  But I realize something also... Cashman’s no idiot and if he was, he would have been gone a long time ago.  But being a General Manager has never been easy, nor is being a Manager, or a player.  It all works together to put the best team on the field.  Sometimes there’s hard choices. Sometimes dudes get cut who we would have liked to keep. Sometimes we sign players we don’t want.  Sometimes we sign “old” guys, who, we forget are “experienced" guys.  And that’s what I’m seeing right now… guys, veterans working hard in our lineup. And that's not all, they're forming their best bond and going on and kicking ass.  Brennan Boesch was released by the Tigers because they couldn’t find a place for him and he “wasn’t the 30/30 guy they thought he was.” No matter. The guy hits the ball harder than many guys in the box. 

Vernon Wells was done, remember?  Even I was confused when the Yankees signed him. Read THE VERNON WELLS TRADE IS BIZARRO for context on that.  I am pleasantly surprised with Wells and I like to be wrong when it comes to my Yankees.  They prove me wrong.  Travis Hafner has done a ton of nice hitting.  Lyle Overbay just needed a chance to play and he’s shining right now. Kevin Youkilis? He's a gamer.

Something happens when you put on the pinstripes.  You feel the pride. You feel who had been there before and you don’t want to disappoint.  Not only for yourself, but for the club.  Look at Francisco Cervelli.  No one and I mean NO ONE believed this guy could be a starting catcher in the major leagues.  But the difference is HE believed and, when given the shot, the innings to perform, he’s shut up his critics and good for him.

Brett Gardner hit a monster homer run the other night that hit the right field foul pole.  And I don’t mean it was wimpy and just made it, I mean it crashed high and looked like Cecil Fielder hit it.  My point is things happen when a team gels… winning is just as contagious as losing and I like it.

Look at our top 3.  CC Sabathia almost seems like he’s finding his groove early.  40 year old Andy Pettitte looks like his 30.  Hiroki Kuroda? The dude just pitched a complete game shutout.  I can’t believe I doubted this signing 2 winters ago, but we brought him in and he’s terrific. 

It’s the pride of the Yankees… I believe that.  They read the papers, you know they do. They get angry, they prove the critics wrong.  There ability is clear and there heart and there passion is contagious… and by the way, we don’t even have Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson with us… can you imagine how that changes things when they get back?

No question, the Yankees are in the driver's seat. Old? Nah… just experienced...just skilled… that's what I wrote in NO DOOM & GLOOM WITH OLD AGE...JUST SKILL: "Age don't mean a thing unless you, the player, are thinking about it. Jeter doesn't think about that crap. Neither does Andy Pettitte... if he did, he would have stayed retired. No, the ones who think about it are the haters.  Hey, that's fine, but they don't play the game, so they don't get it."  

Not bad for a fan website... just sayin'.

ATTACK OF KURODA & THE YANKEES

A quick recap of last night's game which was also the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game of the night. Things were pretty quiet much throughout the first 4 innings. That is until the bottom of the 5th where the momentum got a kick start by base hits from both Brennan Boesch and Francisco Cervelli. Jayson Nix hit an RBI sac fly scoring Boesch.

Brett Gardner then hit a monster shot of a 2run HR that hit the foul pole out in right giving the Yankees a 3-0 lead.

Hiroki Kuroda pitched solid getting a complete game shut out. He struck out 5, and held the Orioles to 5 hits. Good game tonight by the Yankees. We got a win going into an off day today. Tuesday will bring the start of a 3-game series against the Diamondbacks.

CHECK OUT HOW MESA & NUNO ARE DOING...

I just wanted to bring you some news about Melky Mesa and what he is up to these days since the start of the season. I know you guys are curious...

So far Melky is hitting .250 with 6 hits in 24 at-bats. He has 1 HR with 3 RBI's. We wanted to see Mesa make the major league roster but with Vernon Wells and Brennan Boesch added to the outfield depth chart, we were pretty certain he would be sent down to AAA Scranton/Wilkes Barre. For the most part, he had a 5 game hitting streak between April 4th through April 8th. I hope to see some progress out of him down on the farm. We know what he did at Spring Training and we hope if he gets enough at bats down on the farm, eventually it will get him call up to the Bronx sometime in the near future. Time will tell for Mesa.

Remember Vidal Nuno? He is the lefty who had a big Spring Training and drew some attention as a possible option for our major league roster. You can find out more about Nuno in Jeana Belleza's piece, VIDAL NUNO COULD BE THAT NEW YANKEE LEFTY.  Nuno still has yet to win a start but is pitching with an ERA of 2.31 and has struck out 12 batters in his first 2 starts with the Rail Riders. Again, hopefully Nuno can continue to gel as we already know that having effective lefties on your depth chart is definitely like striking gold.

As for the rest of the Baby Bombers, just like the Bronx Big Brothers started, they too are off to slow start. With only one win in their first six games, they can still turn this around. I personally will get a look at the Rail Riders when they roll into my town to play the Red Sox Triple A affiliate the Pawtucket Red Sox. I hope to get a good look at the kids and bring you a report on what's happening down on the farm soon... look for it.

CLEVELAND ROCKED!

Andy Pettitte pitched a gem and it was overshadowed by the bombs in Cleveland tonight! The Yankees were knocking them out of the park at a record level.  They were on a mission and they clearly refused to play small ball.  Maybe this was just a crazy coincidence that the Yankees continued to crank out home runs. Maybe it was a sign that the Yankees are truly in-sync.  Or maybe this is what Brian Cashman knew would happen all along, and we, the fans, on the outside looking in are wrong about this club. Any way you slice it... the Yankees are in fact the real deal, and it was evident tonight when they were the "true" Bronx Bombers!

First off, our "go-to" guy, Andy Pettitte.  7 strong innings. He struck out 4 and gave up 5 hits and only 1 run.  What can you say... it's Andy Pettitte... simply the best and stronger than ever.  And to think... this guy retired. My goodness.

Now onto the hitting.  There was a ton of it and I'm bound to miss something, but here it goes...

Brett Gardner hit a double in the first inning and then the homers began. In the 3rd, Ichiro Suzuki hit a solo shot. Robinson Cano, who is hot as hell had a 2 run home run and a 2 run double tonight. Kevin Youkilis clobbered a two run home run off Brett Myers in the sixth inning.

Then Lyle Overbay hit a solo shot off Myers in the 8th, and then Brennan Boesch hit a 2 run shot off Myers in the 8th.   In the end, the Yankees were a power club tonight... small ball what?

Final tonight: Yankees 14 - Indians 1.  Oh yeah... and that losing record? Um, we're 4-4. A new season starts tomorrow...
