IF YOU'RE A MAJOR LEAGUER, YOU BETTER HUSTLE

A long time ago when Bleeding Yankee Blue was in it's infancy, a tool by the name of Peter Keating of ESPN the magazine thought it would be unique to try and throw an up and coming writing under the bus in a much bigger forum than my BYB audience... (ESPN) to shame me with my OPINION of why Robinson Cano needs to hustle his ass off as a millionaire role model for the New York Yankees.  He didn't reach out to tell me... he just did it. Hey, that's his right.... but thank god for the BYB audience. Because when it was published, our readers were all over it and let me know it happened.

In my piece CANO: NO LEADER, NO DRIVE, I wrote "Maybe it’s him NOT fist pumping after a game or big play like Jeet does. Maybe it’s him just making it seem like it’s “too easy.” The energy is much different. Comparing the 2, Jeter and Cano, and I hate doing it… Cano looks like he’s padding numbers as opposed to leading a club to a championship."

I'm slamming a Yankee there, I fully admitted that back when I wrote it in 2013. But in 2013, not everyone was so sensitive.

Back then you could write an opinion and have a mature banter back and forth on social media or in the comments section of your story.  But that's when that shady Keating wrote this in his article:

And with a difference of opinion from Keating, I'm fine with that... it's how he handled it that made me realize what kind of a sad journalist he is. Do you know to this day he has never responded to a single email, call, tweet? Nothing. That's spineless.  But more to it... he missed the point of what fandom is and why I wrote what I wrote.

Fans WANT hustle. Fans WANT players playing hard. They pay good money to go to games and to see wins. They understand that teams will lose, but they get frustrated anyway. One thing they don't get? Dogging it.  Keating can act like an intellect all he wants, many of these journalists can. But the difference is these so-called established writers are really just bending over for these athletes because it helps them. They'll rarely slam players because they don't want to look bad in front of these organizations and not get future interviews and freebees when the team allows. And so, they kiss ass, they act like they care and they push their integrity aside and try to slam the little guy, the fan as being wrong and ignorant.

But we're Bleeding Yankee Blue. We cater TO the fans. We don't care if a Yankee sucks, we're gonna tell you and if the Yankees win, we celebrate. That's because being a fan is special, either way.

I'm not looking to get into the Yankee party. Our BYB team will never sway from our integrity and that's vital in journalism... in fact, dare I say, integrity in journalism is gone these days.

Fast forward to race, white privilege and no one getting along on any level in 2021. (Wow that escalated quickly.)

Opinion these days gets you attacked, abused, yelled at. You can't have an opinion.  Now, before I go further with this, I need to state what opinion is, and what fact is.  There is a difference.

Facts are important. If you're gonna spew facts, make sure they're right. If you are listening or reading a commentator talking about something, make sure you can decipher if that person is offering opinion or FACT. Sometimes these commentators or "influencers" say things that aren't true.  That's bad. Aubrey Huff is a perfect person for that. He's a tool, lies and acts like what he says is fact, when, if you were to research his comments, there is usually no source attached and you can debunk it with actual research from legit sources.

And then you have opinion, which, I respect. But it's when we dive into that line between journalism and fan that I have a problem.

Enter Jesse Spector and his attack of Andy Martino's assessment of Gleyber Torres. He claims, and this is so odd to me, that Martino made a racial attack against Torres. That not hustling for a man of color is different than for a white player.

I appreciate that, but I gotta tell ya, I don't agree. No, not because I'm white, but because I have a difference of opinion.

What I DO agree with is the unfair attack toward Torres. If you are gonna look at a check swing tapper to the mound and yell at a player for not running hard to first, you are pretty much an idiot.  These are professional athletes in the field. The percentage of him busting down the line and making on that play is probably 0.08%. Not Happening. So, if Spector is calling Martino out for that, good for him.

Spector writes: "As it is, the Yankees have lost six of seven, are tied with the Twins for the worst record in the American League, and sit only half a game ahead of the Rockies for the worst record in baseball.

And it’s all Gleyber Torres’ fault, apparently.

Torres did not run hard on a check-swing tapper back to the mound, it’s true. You can understand his frustration, being 11-for-59 on the season with no homers and 15 strikeouts, while also struggling defensively at shortstop....

At the same time, it’s 17 games into the season. Torres is a two-time All-Star — and he’s only 24...

Or, for Andy Martino of SNY, Torres can be made the scapegoat. The idea here is that “It’s not a birthright to start games for the New York Yankees, even if you’re one of the most talented players on the team. It might be worth a shot for the front office to remind the entire group that these jobs must be earned on a daily basis.”

That’s right, the Yankees should send Torres to the minor league alternate site, and install Tyler Wade, an objectively worse player, at shortstop, in order to cure their slow start.

“The Yankees’ problems are not nearly all Torres’ fault,” Martino wrote. “But he’s optionable, struggling, and showing a lack of hustle.”

This is where I have a problem. Balance.

I don't know if Andy Martino has called out white players for lack of hustle before, and to be honest, that should be Spector's focus of this article.  Spector is grouping ALL WHITE JOURNALISTS into a pot and basically suggesting that white journalists don't call out white athletes on hustle.  And that's my problem... All black people aren't the same... neither are all white journalists. I don't feel like that's too fair.

Spector says:

"Gardner’s “lack of hustle” in April of 2019 was described as “uncharacteristic” by the New York Daily News. Meanwhile, the San Francisco Chronicle’s reference to Posey was a caption, noting that Posey was “not booed … for his lack of hustle,” associated with a Sept. 15, 2019 column by Ann Killion headlined, “Why Giants’ Buster Posey still gets benefit of doubt in frustrating year.”

The other white players who have gotten tagged this way are Harper and Souza, both of whom were benched by managers explicitly for incidents where they didn’t go as hard as they could...

Is it really the case, then, where not hustling is an almost universally Latino issue, and when it isn’t, it’s highly likely to be a Black player not giving his all? Or is this an issue of perception from the heavily white media corps, not to mention the heavily white baseball executive and managerial contingent?"

And see what he does there? Couches it as a question, yet his headline says so much more:

"What it really means when white sportswriters talk about lack of hustle".

I read Jesse Spector. I love what he does, but I also feel like this is just as racist as what he's accusing white journalists of doing. Do I dislike the guy for it? Nope. It's a deep, important perspective that needs to be taught and explained. I just didn't like the bunching.

But you know what it does? It opens my eyes. I will be mindful of how I react to hustle going forward. And you know what? Black, White, Latino... they're all ballplayers... they ALL should be called out if they're not busting down the line.  On a check swing tap back to the mound?... NO.  But on an infield hit to the shortstop or third baseman? ABSOLUTELY.

I don't care if it's Brett Gardner, Robinson Cano, Bryce Harper, Gleyber Torres or Fred the Martian... if you have fans paying big money to pay your salary and you jog? You need to be called out... not racially... but as a chump athlete that thinks he made it because he's a millionaire on an MLB team.

Fans pay big money to see big things. It's what they expect. While human, this is the biggest stage in sports... they're ain't nothing racial about hustle.

Smart perspective Jesse Spector. Makes you think.

THE BAD LIAR

I used to admire this guy, but he's now just basically peddling BS just to draw a Twitter following or something and I gotta tell you, it's dangerous.  This isn't about the Yankees guys, this is just about me rambling about false bullshit so if you wanna tune out here. you may. Forgive me, I gotta get this off my chest.

I hate when people push a narrative that's not true, but act like they are part of a movement. Yet, this loser just sits in his house doing nothing but getting us all riled up. Dare I say, in today's society where no one actually reads facts or values truth... you're just gathering sheep.  The irony is Aubrey Huff is the biggest sheep of them all.  His latest piece of theater was that he walked through a supermarket in California... allegedly... and spewed how he was not wearing a mask and got some dirty looks and thinks everyone needs to do it.

Here's the problem, there wasn't a soul around him. If he was truly a rule breaker, you'd see a crowd... you'd see the faces, the disgust, the applause whatever.  You'd see something... you see nothing but this toolbox claiming he's some crusader.  He's not. Why? Because this guy is too worried about what people think about him on both sides... so if he can fool you, he will try.

Remember he's anti-mask, but wore one on his recent trip to Kentucky. So, for all y'all that think this guy is noble? You've been played, just saying.

I don't care if you want the vaccine or not. I don't care if you want to wear a mask or you don't. I don't care if you believe in COVID-19. I do, that's good enough for me. What I do care about is facts and information.

Where is the tweet about Aubrey having to wear a mask on his flight? He left that conveniently out. That's because he wears a mask and that's disingenuous to his false brand. I know for a fact that he wears one where places require one, especially when he's with his boys. My point is, this guy's a fraud, all for your entertainment.

So, do what he does, go for it. And if you get ill, or die, or get busted on social media for not following the rules, be sure to let this guy know he's being destructive.

I leave you with this...When he preaches America needs to be taken back and applauds a capitol riot, just remember he wasn't there. He was in the comfort of his home.

Facts are pretty important. This guy doesn't use them. Be weary.

ASIANS ARE NOT A VIRUS. THE VIRUS IS HATE.

I'm so sick and tired of stupidity.  I have to tell you, we are in a very dangerous world right now. Social media has crippled people's thinking and have literally made everyone stupider.

Look at my continue fact checks and wise cracks with Aubrey Huff on Twitter.

He continually puts out crap, lies, bad facts and people, sheep... believe everything he says.

There are no more independent thinkers and the world is full of wanna-be influencers. That's scary.

COVID-19 is a virus. In the world, we are doing our best to combat it. If it means that health officials ask you to wear a mask to protect yourself and others, do your part. It's not a big ask.

If there's a COVID vaccine out there that could protect people? Take it... IF YOU CHOOSE TO. It's not mandatory... it's a precaution. You can read all you want about people that have died from the vaccine, but the numbers don't add up to what COVID has killed. I'm not saying you're risking dying by taking the vaccine. I'm just saying it's to better humanity so one day soon we can all take our masks off.

I lost too many friends this past year.  Some were careless... some were defiant suggesting that the Government can't control them. Now they're dead.  All I'm saying is, if you're smart, not selfish... it could make a difference.  But it's more than that... it's what's transpired since this virus hit our shores. Those same, idiotic "influencers" think it's ok to blame Asian Americans. What's the reason? There's no connection.  It's like looking at me as an Italian American and saying, "Oh, you're Italian? You're mobbed up?" It's racist and idiotic. Knock it off.  Stop calling Asians the virus. Wake up! Think for yourself! Read everything. ACTUALLY READ. Don't read a headline from Aubrey Huff, he knows nothing. Read articles... FROM LEGIMATE SOURCES... left, right, everything... and form your opinion that way.  Sure, it takes longer to find the truth, but it's the truth and not made up.  I'm so tired of it.

Masahiro Tanaka walked away from the MLB and the Yankees because of Asian-American hate. That came from his mouth.  That's being reported everywhere today.  Do you see how serious that is? He's scared enough for his family that he would leave America... the greatest country in the world, full of opportunity, to circle the wagons and go back to his homeland.  That is significant.

NJ.com writes:

"In an interview with a Japanese newspaper, Tanaka appeared to suggest that one of the reasons he and his family chose to return to Japan was because they faced racism amid the coronavirus pandemic. According to a translation from Google on the Japanese newspaper’s website, Tanaka said his son felt insecure at school and that they were “discriminated against.” He also said his wife felt “anxiety” in the U.S.

NJ Advance Media’s Brendan Kuty reports Cashman was asked Monday about the Insider.com report:

“Brian Cashman said Masahiro Tanaka didn’t tell him about any instances of racism he faced in the U.S., but that it was ‘heartbreaking’ to read about.”

Think real hard about that.  Think about the Asians getting beaten on streets in my country... the USA, because they just wanna make ends meet or just want to live their life in a free country... and they can't.... because some asshole deeply believes that Asians are to blame. Think real hard about that.  Think about how they got that information. Probably from the internet of some hate sight. Probably from Twitter where headlines of false information reign supreme.... and someone with an axe to grind thought that that one headline "must be true" without doing the research to find out the truth.

We are America. We are supposed to be the example of freedom, humanity and what is it now? Think about it?

Trust me... no one is making you wear masks. No one is making you take the vaccine. No one is taking away your guns. No one is banning abortion. And no... Asians aren't the virus.... Hate is.

You need to read EVERYTHING. You need to smarter. You need to stop being a sheep... Left, Right... all of you.  It's disgusting and it's time to better yourself with information. Otherwise... we will never move forward.

I feel terrible for Masahiro Tanaka, but as a family man, he did what he needed to do to protect his family. I applaud that.  But that's a signal folks... wake up.

I leave you with this. Read this dynamic piece from the Athletic by Kavitha Davidson.

A must read!

SUZYN WALDMAN SLAMS THE RANGERS!

Suzyn Waldman has spoken! So, listen, because she's right!

With all this COVID-19 stuff, people are going crazy. And now with places like Texas opening up to regular life again, and the pandemic not over, it's wrong and it's selfish, just like that idiot Aubrey Huff. If you really wanna read misleading tweets, lies and falsehoods, read that loser because he seems to think that it's about him and not the 532,000 that have died because of this pandemic.

Anyway, enough about that, it's just facts... people are dying and if wearing masks and vaccinations work, then do it. NOT for you... for the rest of our people.  Enter Suzyn Waldman.

The New York Post writes:

"The Rangers announced on Wednesday that they will allow full capacity — 40,518 fans — for Opening Day at their new stadium, Globe Life Field, when they take on the Blue Jays. After that game they will have socially distanced seating.

Yankees play-by-plan man John Sterling brought up the story to Suzyn Waldman on Wednesday night’s Yankees broadcast.

“I am glad I am not there. I am glad I am not there,” Waldman said. “Stupid.”

I really hope that 2 weeks after opening day there isn't gonna be a huge outbreak in Texas after their opening day.  Then again, I hope there is... to make a point. You know what I mean, it's sickening.

I applaud Suzyn Waldman. The greatest! Love that she's speaking her mind.

CAN AARON HICKS HIT 30 DINGERS?

Well... if Aaron Hicks is healthy for an entire season, I say absolutely. Here's the problem... he's never healthy. But damn I love his confidence. NJ.com writes:

"Hicks’ 27 homers in 2018 are by far a career high — his next-best total was 15 the year before — but he thinks he’s capable of blowing past that every season.

“It’s definitely going to rise,” Hicks said. “I definitely see myself hitting 30 plus. That’s what I want to do and that’s what I believe that I can do. If get 500 plate appearances, I’m definitely going to hit my mark with those numbers.”

And Hicks isn't the only one who's pumped about the season. Us Yankee fans are too. I was reading Twitter the other day. And Yes, it's such a sewer with a-holes like Aubrey Huff, but there's some good stuff too... Yankee fans expressing their true love for their team.

I saw one fan suggest Luke Voit will get 50 homers in 2021. And one fan even suggested that this is the year that Aaron Judge hits 62 homers beating the Yankees all time record of Roger Maris and his 61.
And here's that Judge one:

Nice! Listen... let's hope these predicts are right. I wanna see a monster season for my Yankees!!!

IS THE POSSIBLITY OF JT REALMUTO A REAL THING FOR THE YANKS?

I don't know what to believe any more. I mean, we literally just had an election but no President was determined yet because the votes weren't all counted. Meanwhile, our president says he won.  But that's not how democracy works and I had to let Aubrey Huff know that...

Republican or Democrat, I don't care what you are.  When it comes to common sense and Democracy, all votes need to be counted. And so what's my point? Understand common sense and run with it. Read EVERYTHING, not just 1 thing and make up your mind. Read a headline sure, but read the article attached to it. That's the problem with society... in our world of Twitter, no one reads for information anymore. They just read a headline and make something up to sound intelligent. But you don't come off smart... you come off looking like a fucking idiot. Hence, Aubrey Huff.  OK, I'm getting off track.

I just read this headline about JT Realmuto, a solid catcher and choice for the Yankees, assuming we are getting rid of Gary Sanchez, but I wanted to see what Mike Rosenstein had to say about it. Check this out:

"...there will be at least a few nine-figure contracts signed this offseason. MLB Network Radio’s Steve Phillips thinks one of them will go to Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto.

"J.T. Realmuto is a quiet, humble leader who plays his a** off every single pitch, and lets his athleticism, his hitting and his catching ability do the talking. Realmuto is the best catcher in the game. His free agent value is boosted by the fact that he is a great fit for both the Yankees and Mets. He will get over $100 million."

It’s no secret the Yankees aren’t happy with Gary Sanchez, so Realmuto could definitely be a good fit in the Bronx."

Now, a few things here.  Steve Phillips is probably the worst person to judge anyone's talent. He was horrible as a GM for the Mets and is never right.  That being said, the idea of Realmuto to the Yanks is intriguing. But how will the Yankees get him? Who will the Yanks trade Sanchez to? What will the exchange be? My point is... this is just an idea and nothing more.

The rumor season can be fun and this idea is fantastic... but we need more.  That's all I'm saying.

Fun rumor. Read everything. And if there is more to this Realmuto story... I want more information, something Rosenstein lacks here.

TULO RETIRES

Oh, Thank the good Lord.

Troy Tulowitzki came to the New York Yankees at the wrong time in his career. And now... it's over. Yahoo Sports writes:

"Tulowitzki is hanging up his cleats. The 34-year-old Tulowitzki announced his retirement from baseball Thursday saying, “It has been an absolute honor.” Tulowitzki played in just five games with the Yankees this season. He injured his calf in early April and was unable to return. In his retirement statement, Tulowitzki expressed a desire to stay in the game."

Here's that statement:

Now, I love Tulo, but like any baseball player, things come to an end. As a fan, you don't want them to hang it up, but you see the decline and you think about it.

When I heard the news that he was retiring, I was happy for him, plus I was relieved. It's hard to watch a solid ballplayer decline in front of your eyes.

I'll tell you what. I'd love to see him on that Aubrey Huff podcast OFF THE CUFF with AUBREY HUFF. Talk about honest interviewing. I'd love to hear about any nuggets Tulo has about the Yankees clubhouse or baseball in general.  Hey Huff... get him on!

Anyway... happy retirement to Troy, a class act all the way through. Good luck my friend.

GREAT PICKS FOR THE HALL OF FAME!

I love this Hall of Fame class!

There will be some great players named to the Hall of Fame this year, and these guys deserve it! Honestly.

The Associated Press simply writes the following:

Photo: Tim Umphrey
"Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Jim Thome and Trevor Hoffman elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame."

Now, I am not lucky enough to vote for the actual Hall of Fame. But myself and the BYB writers are members of the Internet Baseball Writers Association of America, and we do vote every year for who we think should be in the Hall of Fame.  Here is my ballot:

It also should be noted that Vladimir Guerrero and Edgar Martinez had already been honored in previous IBWAA elections, which is why you don’t see their names listed here.

And if I was thinking clearly at the time, I would have marked Vlad on my ballot.  That's my bad.  It's good to see that I was in line with the baseball writers on the others.

Photo: CBS Sports
And yeah, I voted for guys like Matsui and Huff in my picks.  Those were guys I respected as players, maybe they don't necessarily deserve the honor right now, but still, it's my vote, I can do what I want with it.

Anyway... congrats to the winners this year.  It's pretty damn exciting.

DON'T PEE IN THE POOL

With Mark Teixeira out for 8 to 10 weeks, read HERE, many have gone into full panic mode in Yankeeland.  I'm not yet. An Opening Day pitch has not been thrown yet... it's the Spring. I just can't get crazy about it yet. I will tell you that the idea of certain dudes internally already available for 1st or 3rd has diminished.

Yes, we have Kevin Youkilis, and he'll fill in for Alex Rodriguez, but we lost Nick Swisher and Eric Chavez, 2 guys that would be have been great at first base in Tex's absence.   No bother... we can't go back in time, what's done is done. We don't have them and no one would have predicted this.

(In Photo: Juan Rivera)
Is Dan Johnson the answer at first base? He may have to be.  Will Juan Rivera also contribute there? Sure, but we may also need him in the outfield.  Questions, questions and luckily for me, I don't have to come up with the answers, the Yankees do.

Brian Cashman isn't too excited about the free agents that can fill in either by the way.  He was asked about it and as you can see from Mark Feinsand of the Daily News's Tweet below, Cashman's statement is obnoxious:

Now, Carlos Lee and Aubrey Huff are out there as possible "plug-ins" for the Yankees,  this is true.  After all ,they are still free agents. But the reality is, they either need to suck it up and just make a phone call to Cash and tell them that they'd be happy to sign on, OR they should just turn their back on the Yankees and tell Cashman to scratch.

(In Photo: Carlos Lee)
Cashman meant nothing by it his "pee in the pool" statement.  He was trying to be provocative, and he believes in what we have internally. But the reality is, that statement is insulting and cuts deep if you're a player still on the junk heap.  Me personally, I don't see how this Tex situation is as major as everyone else thinks it is.  Sure, without him, Granderson and Alex, we lose a shit load of home runs, but there are 2 things we can do... play small ball and manufacture runs the way baseball should sometimes be played, or the Yankees need to go out and get a big bopper or... 2.   Sitting on the sidelines questioning what can be done, is no way to go through life... the Yankees need to act.  The question is, what will Cashman do?

Quick, someone get Giancarlo Stanton on the phone...not only will that provide stability in the outfield, but we'd also have more options at first. I know... I know, I'm silly. But the idea of Stanton in pinstripes would be glorious.

Please comment, we have DISQUS, it's easier than ever. Let me know what you think and follow me on Twitter @BleednYankeeBlu and join the group Bleeding Yankee Blue on Facebook, just type it in.

THE RED SOX ARE PLAYING HARDBALL WITH NAPOLI

Sounds like there is more trouble in paradise between the Red Sox and Mike Napoli. Baseball can be a funny business, and the recent rift could play nicely into the Yankees hands. I can't help but wonder if the Yankees are just laying in the weeds waiting to pounce on this one...

Back on December 3rd, the Red Sox agreed to sign Mike Napoli for a three year, $39 million dollar contract. Here we are alomst a month and a half later and there has been no contract finalized after a requisite physical gave the Red Sox cause for concern. Napoli is no stranger to injury, and it looks like his recurring hip injuries have scared the Red Sox.

It has been reported HERE by Pete Abraham that the Red Sox have now changed their plans and want to give Napoli a gauranteed one year deal. Doing this puts the pressure on Napoli to give them the plate appearances they expect, otherwise he could find himself a free agent again.
This could give other teams, like the Yankees, the opportunity to pounce. Clearly, things are not going smoothly here. I'm no expert, but I understand why both sides feel the way they do. If I am Mike Napoli, I want the three year deal that was given to me and I want to just sign on the dotted line and get myself ready to report for Spring Training next month.

On the other hand, if I am Ben Cherington do not want to give a player a handsome three year deal that involves a lot of risk to it. Clearly, they saw something in his test results that are not pretty. It's rebuilding time, and you can't expect optimum results on a high priced player with warning signs on a long term deal. Maybe he isn't sweating yet because the Red Sox also went through this already back in 2007.

(In Photo: JD Drew)
It took the Red Sox 52 days to finalize a five year, $70 million dollar deal with JD Drew. They waited it out and eventually got the contract they wanted forcing him to agree to a deal that enabled them to void the contract after three years if Drew were to re-injure his shoulder. Maybe this is the route they will go again.

This scenario has "sneak attack" written all over it. The first basemen market is extremely thin now that Adam LaRoche has signed with the Nationals. Other players available are Carlos Lee, Aubrey Huff, Lyle Overbay and Casey Kotchman, and these guys don't have the same bat power. If Napoli is upset enough to test the waters elsewhere some other team could swoon him away, but it is very unlikely he will get the three year deal and money that was originally offered to him.

I am sure the Yankees are keeping close tabs on this one. Napoli's value has clearly been diminished, and if the Yankees want to continue giving out one year deals, it's not unreasonable to think that they could come in and pull off another big steal. If Napoli is willing then it really poses no risk.

Stay tuned....this could get very interesting. Of course, if anything else develops we will definitely let you know here at Bleeding Yankee Blue.
