A MOMENT WITH TINO I'LL NEVER FORGET!

This is a great email I received from former BYB writer Kate Munrow.  I wanted to share it because it was cute and when it comes to the Yankees, we like to share these types of stories with our audience... after all, we're 1 big family.  Thanks Kate for sharing... Enjoy this, I did.

I had to share this recent experience I had, and I just couldn't help but to think of you guys at Bleeding Yankee Blue! As you remember, I love Derek Jeter.  So, I was surprised with a trip from my family to see him play at the new Yankee Stadium!  I was there June 20th and 21st.  As you know, that Saturday was Tino Martinez day. Well, here comes the exciting part!

While doing a little shopping in New York City, I happened to go into the Cole Haan store for my son to look at shoes.  As I sat on a bench in the side of the store, I looked up and guess who is standing there? YES! It was Tino Martinez!  Now, I thought for a moment that I was going to faint. Nothing that exciting typically happens in my world.

The funny part is, the workers at Cole Haan came up to me and asked if he was famous. Funny, right? Immediately I rattled off stats, rings and referred to Tino as being honored on that Saturday. I also told them he was getting a plaque to be displayed at the Yankees Monument Park.

The girl laughed and said she asked him if he was famous because of my facial expression. Apparently, according to her, Tino told her "No." I laughed. She then approached him again. Apparently she told him I knew everything about him and he looked up and smiled at me.

Now truth be told, I didn't want to bother him.  I read articles about people who didn't want to bother celebrities and athletes while they were out in public... that stuck with me.  That went for me too... but Tino came over to me and my son and introduced himself.  He said "Hi, I'm Tino Martinez", and I immediately smiled and said "I know who you are."

He talked to my son and I for at least 10 minutes. It was the most amazing experience I've ever had with an athlete. Of course, meeting Jeter would trump it all. That being said, meeting Tino was amazing!

Anyway, when we left the store, all I could think about was Bleeding Yankee Blue and what a story I could tell! Hope you liked it!

#10. Shock to the System
 

Derek Jeter not a Yankee….What? (Read HERE.)  My heart literally skipped a beat when I heard this report last week.  Luckily for Bleeding Yankee Blue, we bring you the honest truth. See, it all started with Rick Reilly who simply asked Jeter the question based on Peyton Manning's recent move to Denver from Indianapolis.  But Reilly failed to inform the reader of that and instead Jeter's quote was floated all over the world in minutes.  BYB cut through the BS with DEREK JETER ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE. Glad that was cleared up. The last time my heart sank was when rumors spread Jeter was getting married…. HA.

#9 Blast Off

My best comparison for Russell Martin would be Aaron Boone. I always cringed when these guys stepped to the plate. With Yankees fighting for that American League title… Martin earned my respect with his 10th inning homer to win the game against the A’s last week, (read HERE) much like Boone earned my respect with his homer that put the Yanks in the World Series in 2003. Luckily for us, Martin is hitting himself out of his season long slump! So giving credit where credit is due…Thank You Russell Martin and can you please keep doing it!

#8 A MAZE-ing

Lou Gehrig’s life and fight against ALS still impacts people today! In honor of Gehrig be sure to visit the Chester Corn Maze this fall. Be sure to wear that famous Yankee gear and Alstede Farms will donate $2 to the ALS Association. Every dollar counts in the effort to find a cure for this disease. Read about it HERE.

#7. Back to Back 

Jeter is not the only one making history this season. Mr. Curtis Granderson hit himself right into the history books! He joins Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle and Jason Giambi as the only players to record 40 homers in back to back seasons, read HERE. Way to Go Grandy!!

#6. The Kid's Alright!

Ichiro Suzuki received his first player of the week honor as a New York Yankee last week, read HERE. He racked up 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 5 RBI, 7 runs scored and 6 stolen bases in only 6 games…yeah I think that proves he is worthy.  Ichiro keep that momentum going in the post season! BYB loves Ichiro and predicted he'd be a Yankee in June with ICHIRO A YANKEE? ANYTHING'S POSSIBLE.

#5 BYB Fan Favorite

Sure we get tons of pictures of loyal Yankee and Bleeding Yankee Blue fans all the time, but we wanted to feature someone who was nice enough to send us a picture of her in our Bleeding Yankee Blue shirt! This is Debi, who is extremely loyal and Tweets all of our BYB stories every day! Hey Debi, we truly appreciate you! Thanks.

#4. Good Samaritan

Alex Rodriguez is a controversial figure to say the least. Love him or hate him…he is using his fame and fortune to help kids get off the streets. Making headlines in a positive manner, he talks to Forbes about the non-profit organizations he funds which help kids understand the importance of education, read HERE.  Well Done ARod!

#3 Humble Yourself!

Eric Chavez let the Oakland A’s know exactly what he thought about their dugout display during Sept 22nd’s game. When the A’s took the lead during the 13th inning on Saturday apparently some rookies decided to break out in chants. Viewable from 1st base Chavez stated “It’s all about being humble”, read HERE. Well needless to say the Yanks humbled them quickly when they won the game in the 14th inning.  Rookie Lesson #1: You are baseball players not cheerleaders. Rookie Lesson #2: Don’t count ya chickens before they hatch!

#2 Nick of Time

Having Andy Pettitte back is one of the best things to happen to Yankeeland and when Pettitte returned from injury, he's lived up to the hype. No doubt we need him the next few weeks and nobody better than Andy in October. I can't wait. Stay Hot and Healthy Andy!

#1 From One Icon to Another

 It's amazing how baseball brings players together.  When Ichiro was recently asked about his experience in pinstripes, he took the high road, complimenting Derek Jeter and explaining his love of his experience so far in New York saying "This is a special experience to play with Jeter and the Yankees. When I am an old man I will look back and say "what an experience that was to be on this team..."  You gotta love Ichiro.  Great quote!

#10: Damned if you Do, Damned if you Don’t

When the Yanks are winning the critics state we bought a winning team. When we have a losing streak we are no longer the AL favorite. Read HERE. Comments circulate on the age of our players to the injuries and pitching. This simply irritates the hell out of me! The bottom line is we are the Mighty Yankees! Criticism is expected and ignored.  Remember this… “It's hard to beat a person who never gives up.” ~Babe Ruth. This team is not giving up! So don’t count us out yet!

#9: Bleeding Yankee Babe…Hmmm?

I’m calling on all the Bleeding Yankee Blue Lady fan’s out there!  I think it’s time we bring something to the attention of our beloved Casey. Not sure if you ladies noticed the little corner with the Bleeding Yankee Babe pictures. Well I have and it appears the pictures are of hot ladies only! Don’t get me wrong, these girls are beautiful but I believe a babe can refer to both sexes. With this said I think a couple male babes should be featured.  Here is a couple selections I feel would meet that criteria…Of course Derek Jeter, Matthew McConaughey, Mark Wahlberg, Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum…just to name a few.

#8: Futbol for Jeter

It appears the USA ladies soccer team caught the eye of our Yankees Captain. Derek Jeter was all about watching the team play for the chance to compete for the gold, read HERE.  Have to say it’s pretty impressive for him to notice you ladies. We all know he is quite the competitor himself. Remember you’ve got Jeet in your corner so Play Hard and Get the Gold!

#7: Bucks on the Ponds

Hey Yankee Fans…Do you know your baseball? MLB introduces a new trivia game called Bucks on the Ponds. This game gives you the chance to earn some dough while you are watching the game. They randomly select fans to participate. Read HERE. Be sure to know your Yankee trivia because you never know when they will be back in the Bronx.

#6: Look Out  

Let’s just say if Eric Chavez is on the field you better be on the lookout. During last Tuesday’s game against the Tigers the Yankees were throwing the ball around the infield and things got a little crazy. Not realizing the umpire had tossed Cody Eppley a ball Chavez threw his ball and it popped the pitcher in the head. Read HERE. Thankfully he is OK. Geez be careful Chavez we have suffered enough injury in our pitching rotation.

#5: Coin Toss

Mariano Rivera took to the field at Yankee Stadium to take part in the coin toss prior to the soccer match between Real Madrid and AC Milan. Read HERE. Glad to see Rivera being active. My hope is standing on the field at Yankee Stadium will make him anxious to return to the pinstripes…We miss you Mo!!

#4: Another record for Jeet

Yes once again we are discussing another record to be broken by Derek Jeter! Just Stop and Think what this man has accomplished and what he will accomplish. Jeter tied Hank Aaron for 17 consecutive seasons with 150 hits on August 11th. Read HERE. Truly amazing when you look at the whole picture. Jeter is one of a kind. Outstanding career as well as an outstanding person and role model…Keep it Going Jeet!

#3: Remembering Thurman

Aug 2nd …33 years ago the New York Yankees lost a member of the family. Thurman Munson was not only a catcher but the Captain of the team. He was loved by his fans and teammates...read HERE. A tragic loss that will never be forgotten. His legacy still continues today.

#2: Joltin’ Joe

A picture is worth a thousand words and this writer believed that. While visiting the Diamond Club a private dining room at the New Marlins Park a photo was discovered. The photo was Joe DiMaggio showing a 3 year old boy how to bat. Read HERE. This little boy was Larry Valencourt. Finding the photo priceless the writer tracked down Larry who is now 67 and a US Army safety engineer. Larry was surprised to get the call about the photo taken 64 years ago.

#1: Grants For Lou Gehrig’s

ALS Association announces grants worth 4 million dollars to be rewarded to 31 laboratories. These grants will help with research in hopes to find treatment and a cure for Lou Gehrig's disease. Read HERE. The man who considered himself the luckiest man on the face of the earth would be proud of the efforts to cure this disease.

10. Out of the Blue

Never imagined this one!  An acquisition worth talking about…You know the one that landed Ichiro Suzuki in the pinstripes, read HERE. This is a huge addition especially in lieu of all the injuries that plagued the Yanks this season. Very nice cushion as we move forward to Oct! Welcome to the Bronx Ichiro!!

9. Say it Ain’t So, Mo

Losing Mariano Rivera sent chills through Yankee Nation. But Mo quickly eased our minds by saying he wasn’t going out like that however his return to the Yanks is now questionable….WHAT?  Rivera recently stated “I don’t even know if I want to play next year. I don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring. One day at a time”, Read HERE. Please Say it Ain’t So!  I can only hope that Mariano will continue to rehabilitate and that over time those Pin Stripes will weigh heavy on his mind!

8. Here We Go Again

Another one Bites the Dust seems to be the theme of the 2012 Yanks, Unfortunately!  Adding ARod to the growing list of disabled is enough to make you shake your head! Read HERE. With this said we must remember there is an equal positive for every negative. The positive is the Yanks are on top of their division regardless of the hurdles they’ve faced. It appears this team is tough and eager for a ring!

7. Humanitarians 

Robinson Cano and David Robertson were honored in Trenton for their respective charities. MVP foundation gave the charities $25,000 each. Read HERE. It’s great to see these Yankee phenomenon’s donate their time and fame to help others. Check out these charities and help if you can. Don’t forget to buy the famous Bleeding Yankee Blue shirt. 6. Dazed and Confused

The crowd roars boo in Oakland when Nick Swisher steps to the plate! Swish scratches his head on this one. Can’t understand why you are hated there? Read HERE. Well Swish here is two reasons. #1- You don’t know what you got til it’s gone!  #2- Haters come with the Yankee uniform.  Just grin and bear it because you are the man Nick!

5. Take a Hike Spike

OK Yankee fans this one is from a couple weeks ago however I think it should make the shorts list. Stating Spike Lee caught Mark Teixeira’s bat is a bit scripted, read HERE. Technically he recovered the bat after it fell in front of him. An excited Spike showed his enthusiasm by demonstrating his baseball swing. Let’s just say you don’t need to quit your day job! Besides we all know that Jay Z is the ultimate Yankee fan!

4. Conspiracy Theory?…Don’t Think So

Where’s Wally the Green Monster? (Read HERE)  First of all let’s make this clear the Yankees don’t know and don’t care!  It’s comical that the buzz about the missing monster resulted in a conspiracy by the Yanks to distract the Sox.  Wow!  Let me help you out here....The last time I checked the standings you Red Sox have bigger concerns than Wally. Just Sayin'! Wally was found, read HERE, but this silly story was all over the net!

3. BYB's Favorite GIF

We're not fans of Buck Showalter these days so we stumbled across this GIF file of Buck Showalter in an awkward moment after a missed "five". It's actually kind of funny, so enjoy it.

2. Camp CC

Calling all Youth….CC Sabathia is set to visit Verona High School in NJ on Aug 2^nd to host a youth baseball camp. Read HERE. The camp will focus on the fundamentals of baseball! Thanks to CC for giving our youth such a great opportunity.

1. Super-Human

The return of Joba Chamberlain may be sooner than ever expected. We all know Joba has faced his fair share of adversity however he has consistently climbed back to the top. Read HERE. Cashman stated he "has been doing great'' noting that “He’s been hurt, he gets hurt a lot, but then his recovery time is like super-human." This is definitely great news for the Yankees especially going in to the post season!

10. America’s Team Welcomes our American Heroes

Eight Soldiers participating in the New York Solider ride will cycle to Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. Read HERE. These soldiers suffered life changing injuries while serving our country. After completing the ride, they will be greeted by Yankee staff and players. Nick Swisher I’m sure will be front and center. Stating… "It's an honor for the entire Yankees organization to welcome these brave men and women to Yankee Stadium." 9. Good Vibrations

There is a great Vibe around New York in recent days. We're currently leading the Division and that's great but there's some news coming of returning injured players to the roster and that's always sweet. CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte, Joba Chamberlain and Brett Gardner are soon the comeback but Pettitte will be the longest of the group, read ANDY PETTITTE IS ON THE ROAD BACK, and CC is expected back on July 17th, read HERE. Get ready ladies and gentleman these Yankees are in position to take the 2012 title!

8. Honoring David Roberton & Robinson Cano

On July 26th, the Trenton Thunder in coordination with the MVP Foundation, will honor DRob and Cano and their foundations, High Socks for Hope and the RC24 Foundation. Read HERE. You guys remember Doc Haveron, we here at BYB did a piece tipping our cap to him about a year ago.  Read WHY DREAMS COME TRUE.  Bill Cook, the PR Manager for the Trenton Thunder said this of the event:  “Having two of our All-Star alumni, Robinson Cano and David Robertson, return to Trenton will make this a night that Thunder and Yankee fans won’t want to miss.” You gotta love it.

7. Keeping the BYB Shirt Tradition Rolling!

 6. Moving Forward

Leaving his Yankee career behind, Mr. Bernie Williams is focusing on his musical talents. With that being said Bernie will be playing a free show in Yonkers on July 16th. Read about it HERE.  What a great way to see one of our beloved Yankees! Be sure to check it out!

5. Questionable

Russell Martin's season hasn’t been a great one to say the least! The New York Post as a good story here about Martin wanting to get off to a second half.  Read HERE. Martin said of his struggling 1st half: “The only thing I can do personally is forget about the first half and start over... I know I can do it.” I wish him well and hope he can turn things around for himself and the Yankees, however I must say I miss Jorge Posada.  It’s still hard for me to understand the decision not to resign him. For me, Posada was a great catcher and hitter. It's my opinion that the front office made a bad decision and makes think about Posada more when we see a struggling Martin.

4. The Power Ladies of the New York Yankees

Amber Sabathia sent out a Tweet (HERE) with a fantastic shot of all the wives and girlfriends of the Yankees at what appears to be a baby shower for Erin Robertson who's expecting her first child with DRob.  How exciting.  The world of Twitter is amazing and the fact that the Yankee family reaches out to the fans to keep them in the loop is tremendous. Thanks Amber!

3. Oh My...Goodness Gracious
 
  

 I found a really clever video on YouTube apparently it was created in 2009, but I can't believe I missed it.  It's a clever little sketch where the Yankees make fun of ARod incorporating the pie, the players giving him jazz and of course Suzyn Waldman.  Kudos to whomever made it, I guess it's Global Sports Fraternity... way to go!

2. Kate's a Yankee fan, Verlander

Kate Upton may be dating Justin Verlander (Read HERE), but let's be straight about this...she's a Yankee fan!  Here are some great shots she took wearing her Yankee cap... and other stuff and it's clear to Bleeding Yankee Blue, she knows which team is the best.  Click HERE.

1. The List Continues

Derek Jeter continues to slap the faces of the critics, breaking another record and moving into 16th place in the all-time baseball runs list. He passed Carl Yastrzemski. Read HERE. I can’t even speculate anymore on what this man will accomplish. All I can say is no record is safe. The proof is in the pudding! Currently... Jeter has 1819. Go Derek Go!

10. Captain Cano

Robinson Cano has been named Captain….Captain of the 2012 American League All Star Home Run Derby that is. Read HERE. Cano is the reigning 2011 champ and I’m certain his champion status will not easily be broken.  Already planning his strategy he has invited CurtisGranderson as his first choice to represent the AL. Looks like Captain Cano knows what he’s doing.  Grandy and Cano a dynamic duo that will be tough to beat!

9. Wounded Warrior Supporter

We all love our Yankees for their incredible contributions on the field but let’s not forget the non-baseball related heroics. Nick Swisher announces his support for the Wounded Warrior Project, read HERE. Swish and the Yanks are going to recognize Veterans throughout the 2012 season for their contributions to our country.  You gotta love our United States Military as well as Nick Swisher for all his help raising money and awareness for our brave men and women!

8. Is Soler really on the Yankees radar?

You never can really tell because when it comes to "big name" acquisitions, the rumors fly, but the latest from Buster Olney suggests that the Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs and Braves are the teams aggressively pursuing Cuban sensation Jorge Soler. Read HERE.  We will keep an eye on it for you and bring it to you if something develops!  We should hear about an announcement on Soler any moment, read HERE. 

7. Yankeeography Giveaway

In honor of Father's Day, YES Network in conjunction with MLB Productions is hosting a Yankeeography Giveaway. All you have to do is follow YES Network on Twitter and answer the trivia questions. 6. The Hot Seat

David Robertson found himself sitting in the hot seat in front of a group of kids ranging from K-8th grade.  DRob and his wife Erin made an appearance at Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Park Ridge on June 5th to help raise money for the High Socks for Hope fund aiding those affected by the Tornadoes in Tuscaloosa, AL. Read HERE.  DRob answered questions from various kids and I must say their questions were pretty tough.  Watch out ESPN analysts, the kids at Mercy Academy may just take over your hot seat segment. 5. Yakima Speaker

Mel Stottlemyre spoke at Yakima Valley Community College commencement ceremony last Thursday, read HERE.  Mel can certainly give these young men and women advise on what it takes to be successful. Congrats Grads!!

4. BYB on the set of WKTV!

That's right! Thanks to Nicole Hart, she sported her own Bleedingyankeeblue.com shirt on the set of WKTV recently and helped give us alittle extra promotion.  Like we said in #6. 3. Eye of the Tiger 

He’s got the guts and the glory. He’s went the distance and he’s not going to stop. He’s a man with a will to survive.  He’s Mr. Andy Pettitte the blessing from the past that’s the center of the Yankees future. Keep expecting great things from this man because he has the Eye of the Tiger!! Read Ken Davidoff HERE.

2. Security Breach

During last Sunday's game in Detroit a fan had his one moment in time when he decided to jump on the field and approach Nick Swisher.  Swisher who wasn’t alarmed said “He runs over and he’s like, Come on, Swish, give me some dap”. “I was like well, hell, he’s going to jail. Why not?"  However others like Mark Teixeira and Joe Girardi wasn’t impressed with the fan or the security response time. Read all about it HERE. Looks like the suits in Detroit have some things to work on. As for the fan it appears he chose the coolest Yankee to go to. Hope that Swish fist pump was worth the Benjamin’s and Jail time.

1. Joba On Track

With Yankees being plagued with their fair share of injuries, things no longer look so gloom. Once headlined as the end, Joba Chamberlain is actually at the beginning. Healing better than anticipated Joba threw from a half mound and running. Read HERE. Girardi impressed with his progress says he wouldn’t be surprised if he was back in the stripes this season.  Things continue to look up for the Blue!
