THE TRADE PROPOSAL INCLUDING JASSON DOMINGUEZ THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND!

All I can say is "woah!" It's been a frustrating and slow offseason. The Yankees have sat back and done a lot of observing, which is never what fans want to see. I think the Yankees will make improvements to the roster, but I think it is done by trades rather than free agent signings.

You have to give something to get something good in return, even more so when it is higher valued talent. I have been salivating for the Yankees to get Matt Olson in pinstripes but it is going to cost a lot. It may cost more than what the Yankees really want to spend. This is where my "woah!" comes into play.

MLB insider Joel Sherman had an interesting trade proposal HERE but you have to be a paid subscriber to see it. His proposal includes Jasson Dominguez, Luis Gil and Chad Green for Elvis Andrus and Olson. Hence my "woah!" I mentioned before.

I believe Olson is our long term solution at first base and Andrus would be the stopgap at shortstop until  Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza are Major League ready. That all makes sense but...would trading Dominguez now be a mistake?

I know prospects are just that....prospects. They are not guaranteed to live up to their hype or even become a productive big leaguer. He may not accomplish what Matt Olson already has. It's a gamble and Dominguez is supposed to be a once in a lifetime talent. He's supposed to be the real deal, the player every single team dreams about. He's the Yankees number two prospect and ranked 17th in all of baseball. Then there's Gil who is the Yankees top-ranked pitching prospect at number four and 94th overall. Green also has his own value, he led the Yankees in appearances in the 2021 season.

I think the Yankees improvements this winter will come from trades instead of spending big bucks on free agents. I'm okay with that as long we get good pieces and if it Dominguez is part of a trade it better be a damn good superstar piece but even that I would think twice about. Actually, maybe three or four times.

MY PERSONAL HIGHLIGHT OF YESTERDAY'S YANKEE GAME

The Yankee game sucked yesterday.  It really did.  The Yankees got shut out for the first time in 220 games.  Nuts to think about because that's a great achievement... but true.

But the highlight for me had to be Clint Frazier in left field throwing out Elvis Andrus.  By far my favorite in a while. YES Network thought so too... take a look:

Now many rip on this kid for his "horrible defense". I don't think of it that way. To me as a fan watching this kid, I know it's about confidence, reps and most of all comfort.  He's been under a microscope since he came over from the Indians.  He just needs to relax. Not only that... the press needs to back the F up and let the kid play.

Anyway... not too many highlights yesterday.  This one was however. I'm happy for Clint.

YOU CAN'T WIN THEM ALL, EVEN IN THE RAIN

Sometimes a pitcher goes out there and his tits get lit up.  Sometimes he can't find the strike zone. Sometimes pressure gets to them. Sometimes, in rain, a pitcher can't grip the ball properly, their footing sucks and sometimes, rare, but sometimes... they blow a save. Sometimes the elements kick the crap out of you.  That's the game... and no one should ever give excuses... it's just the way it is.

MLB.com has the story about the Yankees and last night's loss:

"With the Yankees leading by one run and a runner on first base following a leadoff walk issued by closer Aroldis Chapman to Robinson Chirinos in the top of the ninth inning, the game entered into a three-hour, 35-minute rain delay, beginning at 10:40 p.m. ET. After the delay, Kirby Yates entered the game to pitch for the Yankees and couldn't secure his second career save, allowing a two-run single to Adrian Beltre and an RBI single to Elvis Andrus as the Rangers won, 9-6."

Fans can get angry all they want, but sometimes weird things happen, and last night, it was weird.

I saw this comment in our comments section of  YANKS MAY RESIGN CHAPMAN AFTER ALL.

"Sorry though. This guy melts in the rain."  -Dave
 

So I guess we just give up on Chapman. I mean, sure Dave, he did fail last night, and fans don't like to see it, but the elements weren't in the Yankees corner last night.  I mean, Kirby Yates hit 3 batters last night.  Think about that one. Chapman even chimed in on his performance:

"It's very wet out there... I was trying to find a way that would allow me to do my job. So I was doing the best I could. The ball was getting wet easily out there, so the best thing to do is keep asking for a new one and try to get a good grip and try to do a good job."

Think about that. He tried, there was a ton of craziness all around him, look at out lead photo!  All I'm saying is, while it stings, it was highly unusual and we as a fan base just need to move on.

THAT'S WHY HE'S 'NASTY NATE'

Nathan Eovaldi ran the table last night... and good for him.

Eovaldi flirted with a no hitter. As MLB.com writes:

"Eovaldi was trying to become the first Yankees pitcher to throw a no-hitter since David Cone's perfect game on July 18, 1999. That bid ended when Mazara grounded a single through the left side. There have been 10 no-hitters in the regular season in Yankees history in addition to Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series."

He was most effective because he was moving the ball around, changing speeds, using different pitches and being creative.  The Yankees no doubt are thrilled about that and so, they will long to see that again.   Nate went 7 innings gave up 7 hits and 2 runs.  He struck out 6.

Betances and Miller followed and Miller got save number 5.

The Yankee run scoring went like this:

In the third, Jacoby Ellsbury homered. Thank God. Be sure to read AS ELLSBURY GOES, SO GO THE YANKEES which is out feature today!

That was followed by Teixeira doubling home Carlos Beltran.

In the 6th, Starlin Castro homered.  And those are the Yankees 3. The Rangers scored 1 run off of Betances.

Good work, nice win.

THE TROY TULOWITZKI SAGA

No, I never said Troy Tulowitzki was "gonna be a Yankee."  What I said was my source said he could be, and that my friends is the problem with the rumor mill. No one reads the stories... they only read the headline.  Then... suddenly, it's fact.

Here's the reality. BYB was the only one on the "Troy Tulowitzki could be Bronx Bound" train the past 3 weeks, and that's because we had a rock solid source who revealed to us that someone in the Colorado Rockies camp said they wanted to present a list of prospects the Yankees had and try to flip Troy for them. Oh yeah... and there was another catch... they were also looking to unload a bunch of Troy's salary with that. BYB reported that, and even expressed that on the surface, that idea from Rox camp was absolutely ridiculous.

We wrote: SOURCE: "TULOWITZKI TO THE YANKEES..." from November 14th.

In it was a text I received from my source that read: " "Troy Tulowitzki  to the Yankees might actually happen.... It's one expensive gamble. Top prospects and alot of salary."

From there, BYB was able to confirm the names the Rox wanted: Greg Bird or Rob Refsnyder, a pitcher "MLB Ready", like "Shane Greene", and Luis Severino.  Right there, I found it to be outrageous.  Then I was thinking about "a lot of salary" and whatever that meant, and we stated many times on BYB, that that kind of deal for Troy Tulowitzki was not only suicide... it was madness and NOT happening.

Today,  for some reason, that's news.  Andy Martino of the New York Daily News wrote:

" Tulowitzki’s elite abilities are obvious, but the Yanks are sending clear signals that they have no interest whatsoever in assuming the final six years and $114 million remaining on the shortstop’s contract."

That wasn't a confirmation ladies and gentlemen... it was a "strong indication", or, a guess.

I mean, it's an educated guess. It's also a guess that you and I have already formulated on Facebook and Twitter when we chat about the off season.  The idea of picking up "a whole lot of salary" for a guy with a bad hip probably isn't a good idea. Yet, today, I was asked about my "still thinking Tulo was coming to the Yankees." Really?

I also wrote recently that if the price was right, and maybe we traded away 2 lesser prospects, took on $40 million or less, maybe THEN a deal for Tulo makes better sense.  But Bleeding Yankee Blue in the month of November never stated that we "knew Troy was coming to New York." What is true is that my source got a pretty good whiff that Tulo was about to be shopped from his source in Rockies camp. But don't forget, BYB was unclear if the Rockies ever even presented an offer to the Yankees. We still don't know.

That brings me back to the Martino piece... " Further complicating the situation, rival officials who have spoken with the Rockies in the past two weeks have come away with the impression that Colorado will not trade Tulowitzki...."

That is NOT what my source stated at all!  We know Tulo's trade-able because our source said the Rox were planning a package to trade for, and Tulo was the "prize".  That, my friends is just my source versus Martino's source... not wrong, just different sources... in other words... the rumor game.

Here's more: "... the Yankees remained privately steadfast in the position that they had no interest in assuming another veteran contract -- even if that contract belonged to one of baseball’s best hitters when healthy, and a guy who idolized Jeter, and detoured to New York to watch his hero play this summer."

Here's the thing with that final statement;  I believe the Yankees aren't interested in a big veteran contract any longer, but just read BYB every day for that indication.  We firmly believe that the Yankees are close to done giving long contracts to players, or, when it comes to Tulo, taking on his big salary for a whole lotta years.

If they did, the Yanks would have figured out a way to trade for Elvis Andrus of Texas already, who, at the end of his contract would only be 34 years old.

No, at the price the Rockies would be willing to part with Tulo, it's way too high and not worth the risk.  If the price came down substantially, the Yankees should go for it though, but it would have to be a very, very sweet deal... with the Rockies taking on a whole lot of that Tulo salary.

That's the only way it would work, and that's the only thing we have been stating here at BYB all along when the idea of Tulo "perhaps" coming to the Yankees came about from our source.  Giving up prospects, and taking on a ton of salary these days are NOT what the Yankees want to do... but you don't need Andy Martino of the Daily News to tell you that.  You read BYB ... and you're all very smart baseball fans with common sense.

Oh yeah... and Martino's a "Baseball Insider" too. That title cracks me up.  Aren't we all at this point?

A SOLUTION AT SHORT: JIMMY ROLLINS

Sweeny Murti of CBS wrote a good piece about the Yankees and some of the holes that need to be filled.  One of which is shortstop.

I found 1 thing he said very interesting:

"...the more I think about it, the more I’m fascinated by Jimmy Rollins. He turns 36 next week, but has only one year left on his contract in Philadelphia for $11 million. He’s realistically only slightly above average at this stage, both offensively and defensively. But Rollins is also a veteran with leadership skills and some swagger. 

 Those qualities will serve him well as the guy “replacing Derek Jeter.” It’s not a long-term commitment, and if the Yankees are willing to take on the entire salary it might not take a lot in prospect cost to get him..."

As much as I don't want a 36 year old shortstop, this idea makes sense.  It also buys the Yankees time if they're looking for a younger shortstop.

Now personally, I would rather a Elvis Andrus type of player, but only if the Rangers are willing to take a lot of that salary.  If not, maybe Rollins would be a smart, temporary choice...

We'll see.

SHORTSTOPS, ELVIS ANDRUS & TROY TULOWITZKI

A lot can be said about Elvis Andrus and Troy Tulowtizki.  Both are shortstops. Both are being eyed by the New York Yankees in some capacity, as they try to figure out how to fill the position after our great Captain, Derek Jeter retired.  

But besides the talent and the numbers, there is a bigger factor, something that back in the George Steinbrenner days, we didn’t think about.  Well, these days we think about it a lot.  It’s money and it’s big contracts and it’s watching players with large contracts break down in front of our eyes… almost as fast we get them into our uniforms.  I don’t have to run down the list.  Alex Rodriguez is a big example in Yankeeland, but it goes further than the Bronx.

Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, both of the Angels.  Prince Fielder, going to Detroit and then being flipped to Texas.  Are baseball execs any smarter these days? Not exactly.  Look at Miami and Giancarlo Stanton.  

He’s a great player, but he’s not 13 years, $325 million great, especially when you still need to field 24 others guys as well.  They’re foolish in Miami and while Stanton is a franchise player, you gotta wonder what they’re thinking down there.  Stanton cannot carry the team. Plus, you don't know what type of injury could effect him tomorrow. It's a gamble. Sure, he went for the money… and I wonder if he’ll be scrutinized like the other “big contract” players of yesteryear.  We’ll see…

Believe it or not, this all goes back to Elivs Andrus and Troy Tulowitzki, because with years, comes age and with age comes a slow down that teams don’t see when they're signing their “big player.”  Let me state that I think the idea of Andrus in pinstripes is a terrific idea.  But that’s on the surface.  When you think about the years and salary we’d be paying for, it becomes less appealing.  There is a plus with Andrus though. He’s young and if the Rangers can pick up some (most) of that salary that is owed to him, signing Elvis Andrus is a no-brainer. Why? Because at the end of Andrus’s contract, he will be age 34 . Not 38, not 42…. 34  That’s significant.

A Troy Tulowitzki rumor was floated to us late last week here at BYB.  The source is solid, but the rumor is slightly murky. I say that with respect to our source, because the reality is, What we know for sure is the Rockies have their Yankee prospect targets, and one would suggest the Yankees know about it.  Read SOURCE ON ROCKIES: "THEY KNOW WHAT THEY WANT" for more.  

The Rockies want to unload Tulo, but they want prospects in return. In fact, they want way too much.  “Baseball insiders” that don’t have this information are mad at me.  Well, we clearly have different sources, and guess what, that’s OK. It happens.

Here’s the thing though;  Giving up guys like a Greg Bird or Rob Refsnyder and a pitching sensation like Luis Severino and a “MLB ready” pitcher like a Shane Greene, AND THEN taking the majority of Tulo’s contract is absolute madness.  The price is too high for a shortstop who is almost 29 and has a bad hip.  If the Rockies could take the majority of that contract, and maybe we unload a few "less" prospects, I’m all for it.   But, it's still alot of years on a contract for a guy that is most likely past his prime at age 31. Just my opinion.

Here's the reality. The Yankees cannot part with Bird and Refsnyder. Ref would most likely (and should be) the Yankees second baseman next season. Not only that, may I suggest the Yankees bring up Bird too.  Make Bird the backup first baseman to Mark Teixeira, who’s clearly near the end of his career.  Remember I was talking about broken down players and big contracts before? There’s another one.

While the Troy Tulowitzki rumor is in fact true, the price is ridiculously high and the Yankees cannot commit to something like that.  It doesn’t matter that Troy wears #2. It doesn’t matter that Troy wants to be a Yankee. The Rockies need to be realistic.  Troy Tulowitzki isn’t 24… there is no way in hell I pull the trigger on that the way it stands right now. If I had to choose, and if negotiations would go smoothly, I choose Andrus.

Over the winter, it’s going to get silly in the Rumor Mill.  Many of the players are talented, Troy and Elvis included. But these teams that think they’re trading off solid gold and the Yankees should “pick up their salary”, because we’re the Yankees is ridiculous.  We want to win too and we need to be smart with our signings going forward.

BYB HOT STOVE: VOLUME 1

We are beginning a new feature here at BYB called BYB HOT STOVE. Every Wednesday from now until the start of the season, we will focus on hot news items and rumors in and around the MLB with a focus, of course, on the Yankees.

Anxious to find a shortstop to fill the void on the left side of the field vacated by Derek Jeter, the Yankees could go after Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus.  According to Sporting News, "Andrus has been an outstanding defensive shortstop (though his 2014 defensive metrics slipped a bit), he’s solid at the plate for the position (career .272 average, .335 on-base percentage, average of 32 stolen bases a year) and he’ll be just 26 heading into next season. Plus, he’s already locked into a long-term deal. He’s not cheap — the eight-year, $120 million extension he signed in April 2013 kicks in for the 2015 season — but the deal would provide position certainty for a long time." Not loving the longterm deal prospect but I am loving his youthfulness and the speed he could bring to the team.

There is also some buzz around the possibility of Troy Tulowitzki checking out of Colorado for some New York baseball.  But, in order to secure someone like Tulowitzki it's going to cost us some pitching prospects. According to NBC Hardball, the shortstop is talking to the other New York team about joining their club. After scoring Michael Cuddyer on Monday, the Mets are looking at Tulowitzki.  He has a big contract with the Rockies through 2020.  Frankly, I would pass.  He hasn't been healthy for several years and we can't afford no longevity and quick fixes at shortstop.

Both New York teams have shown an interest in Phillies' shortstop Jimmy Rollins.  The Mets were on the horn with Philadelphia just yesterday according to ESPNNewYork.com.  "Rollins, as a longtime Phillie, has full no-trade protection. He will earn $11 million next season, then is eligible for free agency," states the report.  According to Phillies GM Ruben Amaro, "If it is ever the right time, I will have the conversation, but Jimmy will be the one who decides where he is going.” 36-years-old, bad attitude and work ethic issue are not what we need here in the Bronx.  The Mets can have him. The Phillies do have the biggest for sale sign up this off season, so look for movement of veteran players as the team rebuilds.

How about some Pablo Sandoval?  Will the Red Sox jump on the possibility of picking up the third baseman?  According to CBS Sports, "As expected, third baseman Pablo Sandoval rejected a qualifying offer from the San Francisco Giants worth $15.3 million, according to the Associated Press. Sandoval -- now a free agent -- is seeking a six-year contract, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He batted .279/.324/.415 over 588 at-bats last season."  Six years is a long time but reportedly, he will be meeting with the Red Sox next week.

COULD THE YANKEES SNAG ELVIS ANDRUS?

Name dropper Joel Sherman of the New York Post has written the latest nugget in Hot Stove land.  It involves a perfect replacement at shortstop for Derek Jeter... it's Elvis Andrus.

Sherman writes:

"One shortstop that at least has the Yankees intrigued as they rev up their efforts to find Derek Jeter’s successor is Texas’ Elvis Andrus.

The Yankees would have to feel Andrus is a buy-low candidate whose downturn on both sides of the ball in 2014 was reversible and that, at 26, his best years are ahead of him."

Here's the problem though, and Sherman almost contradicts himself in the piece, and I say that because there has been plenty reported about how the Yankees don't want to spend alot this off season. If that story is true, than would this next line make sense for the Yankees? Check it out...

"...Andrus’ eight-year, $120 million extension does not even begin until next season and runs through at least 2022. Texas would love to unload that deal as it searches this market for starting pitching..."

All that is fine and good, but we're talking about $120 million that the Yankees would have to negotiate with the Rangers on, and then pay down a large portion of that contract most likely.  While I love the idea of Elvis Andrus playing shortstop for the New York Yankees.  I just don't know how the Yankees could do it.

WILL THE YANKEES SHOP FOR ANOTHER SHORTSTOP?

Someday Yankee fans everywhere will sit in front of their television and listen to another Yankee great hang up his spikes and call it a career. Thankfully, that day wasn't on Thursday and according to the captain himself it won't be this year either. That gives us all some level of comfort. Derek Jeter will play again sometime this year. When? No one knows. So until he is one hundred percent the Yankees have some decisions to make. Do the Yankees continue with the infielders we have, or will they go shopping for a temporary replacement? If they do, who is available?

The Yankees have trusted the shortstop duties to Eduardo Nunez and Jayson Nix since Spring training started. They have done well for the Yankees during this time, but we never expected them to fill in for this long. Now that we know that Jeter wont be back anytime soon....does this change their approach? Nunez has shown some major improvements this year defensively. He even surprised me so far. The question is, will the Yankees continue to put their faith in this kind of consistent performance going forward? While he has done well defensively, he has really struggled at the plate. He just doesn't look comfortable up there at all and he looks lost. It's weird how his strengths have switched this year. I never saw it coming.

On the other hand, Jayson Nix can also fill in when needed. He has always been known for having a better glove than a bat but even he is surprising people. Nix does have a great arm and he can make a play when needed. This year his bat has shown some signs of life. Sure, his .245BA isn't stellar but he has helped bring runs in, he has 4 RBIs and a home run. Like Nunez, you have to wonder if he can continue to produce like this all season. As the injuries pile up, increased playtime time could drain these guys.

It never hurts to explore what is out there, but the problem is that finding a shortstop right now is like searching for a needle in a haystack. There are three that the Yankees could target if they want some extra infield security.

Cesar Izturis would be an interesting option. He won a backup role for the Cincinnati Reds this spring as a non-roster invitee. If the Yankees are content with the infield as is, it couldn't hurt to pick up a bench piece for the time being. He would be able to fill in at shortstop when someone needs a day off, but he can also play second or third base as well. He would give the Yankees a lot of options because he is so versatile. He is also a switch hitter so he would give the Yankees a much needed right handed bat right now. He is off to a slow start so far with a .238BA, but he is willing to take a walk and won't chase balls as often. He is also playing a back up role for the Reds everyday shortstop Zack Cozart, so the Reds may be more willing to part with him then some of the other options out there.

If it were still Spring Training then Elvis Andrus might be an option. During the off season it was rumored that the Texas Rangers might be willing to part ways with him. His contract was going to expire at the end of the 2014 season and the St Louis Cardinals were looking to replace their own shortstop. Andrus was tied with the Cardinals for awhile read that here. Fast forward a month later and now he has a new contract extension with the Rangers read that here and he wont be a free agent until 2023. The idea of Andrus is nice, but if we have learned anything this off season it is that the Yankees just are not going to make any sort of long term commitments right now. It's a nice theory, and it would mean that the Yankees wouldn't have to worry about replacing Jeter when his dreaded retirement announcement comes along but it is probably too little too late.

If the Cleveland Indians don't make a playoff run this year they could decide to deal Asdrubal Cabrera. The Indians made some big moves in the last year or so and they believe they are a team that could contend, at least that is the plan. If they are too far behind by the All-Star break they could become sellers, and if they are then I bet they would throw Cabrera into trade talks. His name has already been involved in trade rumors, including during the off season, read Cleveland beat writer Jordan Bastian's tweet here. Cabrera is signed through 2014, so he wouldn't be a long term investment. He can also play second base and he is a switch hitter as well. His .229BA isn't impressing many right now but he does have 2HR, 5RBI and a stolen base so far this year. He is also a patient hitter so he wont chase pitches. If the Yankees could get him for the right price he might have a lot to offer the team.

Shopping for a shortstop is never easy, it's probably one of the most difficult positions to fill. Luckily for us, our backups have performed so far. Unless Jeter suffers another setback I don't see them making any moves for a new shortstop. Of course, if the Yankees do make any moves we will have all of that information here for you.
