NOW CANO'S IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT

Don't think it's over and don't think we're piling on Robinson Cano here at BYB. I know that's what it seems, but truth be told, we love Robinson Cano here. But there is something in life called common sense and when you have none, well, you are exposed.  Guess who's been exposed?

The money is running out in Yankeeland and while it appears that the Yankees have become irritated by Cano's selfish antics, it may be what Cano wanted all along.  After all, the Yankees have made their move and now Cano needs to make his.  He appears to be in the driver's seat. It came to me in a dream... more on that in a moment.

The Seattle Mariners are willing to pay Cano $200 million.  We aren't.  So, in the end, this is about money for Robbie and you need to assume that at that price tag, and add in all the spending the Yankees are doing right in front of Cano's eyes, his best bet will be to just cut bait with the Bronx and move to Seattle. 

Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes this: "The Yankees have offered Cano seven years for about $165 million, with hints of maxing out at $170 million with an option for an eighth year. The $170 million figure would equate to $24.285 million a year, third most ever among position players behind just A-Rod and Ryan Howard... Yet, the Yanks privately have believed someone would exceed that, particularly fearing the Mariners, who have contacted Cano’s representatives and have given the feeling within the industry they are going to act boldly in this market. As one AL executive said, “They have lots of money and lots of desperation and that is a dangerous mix.”

Which is why the key question has never changed: What does Cano want? Is he privately telling his representatives to squeeze and squeeze the Yanks, but at the end of the day, he only wants to be a Yankee? Or is he following the last penny? Yankees officials believe he will follow the money."

I find that info fascinating and I wonder if the Mariners are a good choice.  Does he want to money and not care about the team, or the protection in the lineup? Or does he really want to be a New York Yankee? I am under the assumption that he has no idea what's going on with his own negotiations. He seems sad, pathetic even. Plus, where the hell IS the guy??

Then I had a dream last night.  I woke up today annoyed.  What if the Red Sox, who are seeing red right now with the Yanks stealing Jacoby Ellsbury reached out to Jay-Z last night.  What if Cano started texted David Ortiz last night and said, "Put a feeler out."  How would we, true blue Yankee fans feel about that?   We would be furious, just like the Red Sox are about Jacoby.

Alex Rodriguez moved to third base because he was chasing the money.  What makes you think a desperation move by Robinson Cano moving to shortstop, next to Dustin Pedroia ISN'T a possibility.  I say it is.  Yes, as crazy as it sounds, what's to say Cano doesn't make a position change just so he can be part of a contending team, AND get his cake and eats it too... while rolling around in $200+ million.   I know it sounds far-fetched... but in my dream, it was too real and too upsetting and in the end, Cano became the enemy.

I don't know what will happen. I do know that I want Robinson Cano back in New York, and according to FOX Sports, he may be.  Jon Paul Morosi says: "The Ellsbury signing won’t prevent Cano from re-signing with the Yankees. In fact, that remains the likeliest outcome — particularly now that the Yankees seem to have remembered that they are the Yankees and dispensed (in deed, if not word) with this claptrap about a $189 million spending limit."

Interesting again...but we shall see. Look, it's clear; he doesn't know how to deal with his own contract talks, and that's a bad way to go into a free agency season.  I go back to my own theory about free agency.  Sure, you have an agent, and you have "people", but in the end, home is where the heart is. Cano's not a trouble maker.  He grew up with solid parents.  Go home Robbie... go talk to mom and dad... I swear to you, they'll set you straight.
