ALL GROWN UP & DOING THE TOWN!

When Bleeding Yankee Blue started it was just me.  After a while, a collected a few writers and we were on our way.  One of those writers was Will Cohen, a kid with alot of passion about the New York Yankees and an interest in writing stories for me. 

I hired him and he did a great job for me. One of Will's first pieces with BYB was in February 2011, titled WHY PITCHING WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. Since then he wrote dozens more articles for BYB before returning to his own busy life.

I haven't talked to Will for a few years now.  Then, last night, I received this tweet:

Now, while my grammar in my tweet was wrong, I was sincere.  It is always outstanding to see people you know blossom in their passion, and I'm proud to see Will Cohen, a former Bleeding Yankee Blue writer out on his own doing his own blog and having his own dreams.  It should be applauded.

For those of you who remember Will, be sure to congratulate him. His handle is @NYSportsPlease.

CURTIS GRANDERSON IS STILL OK WITH ME!

Here's a great story about Curtis Granderson from a former BYB writer and friend, Will Cohen. Will was literally one of our first writers here at BYB. I'm happy to say we still stay in touch and Will has gone on to be successful in his life. He wanted to share this with the BYB audience. I'm glad he did... enjoy this...

The other day while at Six Flags Great Adventure, I caught a familiar face in the corner of my eye. I took a second look and realized it was our old bud Curtis Granderson. Granderson had a mob of security guards surrounding his girlfriend and him as he entered the Superman roller coaster. I decided to wait by the exit for him to come out. I was only waiting for about 10 minutes because he came prepared with his Flash Pass to skip all of the lines. When he emerged from the exit tunnel, I immediately approached him. He was trying to walk away quickly when I yelled: "Curtis"! 

He turned around and acknowledged me. This cemented all of the positive thoughts I had about him during his time in the Bronx. Although there are many knocks against him as a ballplayer, he couldn't have been a nicer guy.  Even though he made the switch over to Flushing, I don't blame him. The Yankees didn't seem to want him back desperately enough, and he took a nice deal with the Mets.

Granderson was never known as an average guy, but he did in fact blast over 40 home runs in 2011 and 2012 with the Yankees. I don't see him touching the 40 mark with Citi Field's outfield as deep as it is, but 30 home runs is reasonable. 

Anyway... after shaking Curtis's hand, I asked if it was okay if we took a picture together. He agreed!

I appreciate Curtis's time in the Bronx, and wish him luck with the Mets. He went out of his way to please a fan, which I'll never forget.

THE YANKEES & THE FREE AGENT RACE

Every year when the offseason starts, I like to take a look at the potential free agents and who the Yankees should go after, including free agents on the Yankees. I also like to play GM and decide for myself who the Yankees should take, dump, and add.

I view this season as a disappointment. The Yankees were running on all cylinders at one point when they were leading the rest of the division by 10 games and looked as if they could potentially win 110 games or more. They squeaked by the Orioles for the division crown, and also squeaked by them in the ALDS, then promptly got crushed by the Tigers in the ALCS in only 4 games, scoring a total of 6 runs. Alex Rodriguez's lack of production really hurt our chances, but moving him is really unthinkable, and he could end up turning this all around. Here are my picks on the Yankees Free Agents to be.

•  Nick Swisher: Although once a fan favorite, he now seems to be anti-Yankee after a few of the comments that he made about the fans. BYB wrote HEY NICK SWISHER... IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU! Nick will command a lot of money that the Yankees aren't willing to spend on someone who hits so poorly in the postseason, that's the bottom line.

• Hiroki Kuroda: Give this man a new contract! Kuroda had arguably his best season ever after his transition to the AL and proved valuable for the Yankees. He was their most dominant and reliable pitcher this season. I would lock him up to a 2-3 year deal. His age doesn't really seem to bother me much. I am curious however is Russell Martin, his old battery mate in LA was a factor with his success. We shall see if he signs again.

• Ichiro Suzuki: Ichiro's stellar play since coming over from Seattle before the trade deadline makes him deserving of a new contract. He hit .322 with the Yankees, which in itself is enough to earn himself a new contract. I would sign him to a 2 year deal to patrol right field given the fact that Swisher will most likely not be resigned.

• Raul Ibanez: Lord Voldemort is well deserving of a new contract. His playoff performance will go down in history and he is also a good guy to have in the clubhouse. 1 year with a team option for a 2nd year at roughly $2-3 million is the route I would take in giving Ibanez a contract.

• Andruw Jones: He had a terrible season, he batted under .200 and is really seems to be getting old. He was good while he lasted. Let him walk, I'm OK with that.

• Russell Martin: If Mike Napoli or Yadier Molina are on the open market. I say, let Martin walk. If their asking price is too high or the Yanks are unable to get either of them to come to the Bronx, re-sign Martin. Russell has done a good job but there is significant room for improvement with that bat of his.

• Freddy Garcia: Is there even a slight chance the Yankees would sign him again? Don't count on it. Freddy, you did good while you were with us in the Bronx, but it's over. No hard feelings.

• Andy Pettitte: If Andy Pettitte wants to come back, the Yankees should make that happen undoubtedly. That's it.

• Mariano Rivera: No explanation needed here. Re-enter Sandman, he has unfinished business.

• Eric Chavez: Eric provides a good bat and great fielding off the bench. Re-sign him for a 3rd straight 1 year deal.

• Derek Lowe: Solid long reliever/ 5th or 6th starter option, re-sign him. If he doesn't get a gig somewhere else as a starter, the Yankees should use him as their new Freddy Garcia.

We'll have another unique perspective on the Yankee free agents within the next few days as well.  BYB's Lem Allen will give his thoughts, no doubt he'll be pretty colorful about it!

BLEEDING YANKEE BLUE & OUR 2 YEAR PARTY!

2 years and 1 million views later, here we are on Bleeding Yankee Blue's 2nd birthday!  Amazing. Back in September 14, 2010, Casey started BYB as somewhat a hobby, something to do in his spare time because of his passion and love for the New York Yankees. Back then, Bleeding Yankee Blue was only a staff of 1. Then, shortly after, Mikey came aboard and they were trying to figure out the whole thing.  I know because I was one of the first readers to reach out to Casey. Back then it was simple, if it didn't work out, they'd just move on with their lives.

But then something happened, people started reading, like me and we enjoyed the personal opinions of BYB, opinions that other blogs didn't bring to the table.  A blog written by the Yankee fan FOR the Yankee fan. Sounds like it's been done and it has...but not this way.  Being a huge Yankee fan myself and liking what I read, I figured, what the heck and I decided to shoot BYB a note. After chatting about the Yankees, I was asked to come on as a contributor and shortly after, I became the first writer for Bleeding Yankee Blue.  I remember my very first post, WHY DOESN'T CASH LIKE SPENDING CASH?... January 22, 2011.

Although the amount of writing I have done over the past 2 years has fluctuated and I haven't been contributing much recently, I do love both reading and writing for Bleeding Yankee Blue. I really feel that all of us writers like to get our frustrations, wishes, and insight about the Yankees out in writing form, instead of just screaming them at the TV or radio.  It's a great outlet.

2 years feels like a blur, but it really has been fun and Thank God for BYB.  When we first started out, we never really envisioned 1 million views, it seemed crazy at the time, but the BYB staff is tight and we care.  We care about what the readers read, what the readers want and why they might want it.  We know why... because we're you... we're fans too.

This wouldn't be possible without the awesome support we have received from all of you, the readers. There is really not enough thanks we can give you for sticking by us and letting us deliver to you our thoughts through BYB. We're just glad you like it and share it.

Casey asked me to write this because I was the first "official" writer and that in itself and cool, but I feel great to know that I'm still part of the team and that you guys have stuck around for so long.  Thank you and Happy Birthday Bleeding Yankee Blue!

WHAT I MIGHT DO AS THE YANKEES GM

On June 25th the Yankees defeated the Indians 7-1, Hiroki Kuroda got an impressive win throwing 7+ innings of 1 run ball with 7 strikeouts, propelling the Yankees to their 13th win in their past 16 games, and their 8th straight. Sure, it happened 2 weeks ago, but it was significant, it was the beginning of something good for the Yankees, a gelling if you will. The bombers were really clicking on all cylinders and the whole city knew it.

 Then, on June 27th a couple of hours before game time the Yankees announced that CC would be put on the 15 day DL for a groin strain, read HERE. At that point, I was still optimistic for the Yanks because they still had another left hander in the rotation, old reliable Andy Pettitte.  But that changed when Andy went down with a come backer off the bat of Casey Kotchman, busting his ankle, read HERE. It's devastating, but this isn't a cause for complete, "abandon ship" type of concern... we should however look further than who we have to fill the holes, my opinion of course. Why? Because since those injuries, some of the moving parts just aren't working and there is need for improvement....outside the organization.

 Let's break it down. Cory Wade has been good, but not recently.  That was why he was sent down and it's my opinion that he shouldn't have even been in last night's game against the Red Sox, read WADE HAPPENS. They Yankees picked up Chad Qualls and while I'm not exactly sure how effective he really is yet, I'm not exactly pleased with Wade's recent performance and I'm not too confident in Qualls ability.

I'm thinking another solid reliever in that bullpen could really do wonders. If I were assigned the Yankees GM role for the day, I would work very closely with the Houston Astros to make a trade for Brett Myers & Wandy Rodriguez a rental starter and reliever that could really help our club.

• Brett Myers is a former starter turned closer who really can do either.  Throughout his career he has been a starting pitcher on the Phillies (2002-2009) and the Astros. Sure, there were 2 seasons in 2007 when he was with the Phillies and became a closer for a good portion of the season after former Yankee Flash Gordon went down for some time. Bottom line, Myers did such a good job that when Gordon came back, Myers stayed as the closer for the rest of the season recording 21 saves. 

This year Myers was appointed closer when Mark Melancon was traded to the Red Sox. This season Myers has 18 saves already with a 3.54 ERA. He is a solid option to shore up the Yankees bullpen and in my opinion, a better option than Chad Qualls or Cory Wade.

• Wandy Rodriguez is the other piece to this potential deal.  He is the ace of the Astros pitching staff and is a proven left handed pitcher.  Rodriguez has posted an ERA under 4 every season since 2008.  He could be the piece that can fill the void as a lefty with 2 lefties out. Plus, the Astros are a team in serious rebuilding mode. They easily traded Houston fan favorite Lance Berkman to the Yankees in the summer of 2010 for just 2 mid level prospects. 

If Brian Cashman could work the Astros again and get a trade going again, give up a few low level prospects and get the Astros to eat some salary on Myers and Rodriguez, I'd be all over this.

Sure, there are other pitchers out there, but we all know Cole Hamels is just too expensive for the Yankees, Read HERE. How about Huston Street who's a good target (read HERE), and Matt Garza whom the Yankees really like and has already proven himself in the AL East, read HERE, but I tell you what, it's my opinion Myers and Rodriguez could be the best option by the deadline, a reliever and starter, both rentals, both reliable and both for low level prospects. If I'm the Yankees GM for a day, that's what I'd do, what about you? Comment.

WHY DIDN'T THE YANKEES RE-SIGN COLON AGAIN?

In case you missed it, Bartolo Colon pitched a gem Thursday for the Oakland Athletics. It was in the 2nd game of this young baseball season. This is his line: 8 IP 6 K's 3 H 1 BB. Colon was credited with the win.

If the Yankees had re-signed Colon at a very cheap price, similar to before last season, that could have caused the Yankees to potentially have 8 capable starting pitchers on their roster, which would have been way more then they would ever need... Yes, don’t be confused by the title. I am happy that they did not re-sign Colon for this year, but you have to ask why not? Colon would have been cheap and perhaps could have had a better season than last. Sure, we'll never know for sure, but that last start was impressive. OK, enough of playing devil’s advocate…

First of all, I doubt that Colon can keep up this level of play for most of the year, and secondly there wouldn't be anywhere for him to play if the Yankees re-signed him. Colon most likely would have been slotted as the 7th or 8th starter, and would end up not pitching very much, or perhaps come out of the pen on occasion or cut or who knows. Look at the drama Freddy Garcia was dealing with when Andy Pettitte came back, right? Same type of thing in my opinion.

I am happy for the small market A's who have to play "Moneyball" in order to succeed in picking up a quality pitcher like Colon at a cheap price, he fits their needs. So far it is paying off for them and I wish Bartolo nothing but the best this season. I think it’s safe to say many Yankee fans wish him well also.

The Yankees clearly have a starting pitching problem without Colon and it may be a good problem to have, as they have too many starting pitchers for 5 slots; but in the next few days we’ll know exactly what the Yankees want to do with their 5 slots. With the Yankee “good problem”, I’d say it was a smart move not to re-sign Colon early in free agency... it was good to part company when they did. Plus, we can all root for Bartolo as he embarks on a new journey in Oakland. Good Luck to you Bartolo.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM ANDY PETTITTE THIS YEAR

If you haven't heard already; Andy Pettitte has agreed to return to the Yankees on a $2.5 million minor league deal, read HERE. I never thought that I would be writing about an Andy Pettitte comeback after he has brushed off questions of a comeback multiple times. Well, we know that ol' reliable is coming back and it's terrific. The big question is, what can we expect from a 39 year old who hasn't pitched in more than a full year? Well... here's what I'm thinking:

Andy probably will not be ready for Opening day with the Yankees and will probably join the team in late April- early May. This is clearly my opinion of course. I can see him making between 20-25 starts and having a stat line similar to this:

12-7 4.25 ERA 110 K's 140 IP 50BB

This may be somewhat wishful thinking, but I am not completely positive yet how much a 39 year old a year and a half off of pitching can offer to the Yanks. He can turn into Brett Favre-esque, like when he lead the Vikings deep into the playoffs after coming out of retirement. Pettitte could also end up never really regaining his old form and only making about 10 starts...I'm just saying... you never know. Not to look at the negatives here, but there is always that possibility.

I love Andy Pettitte, and I really don't know a Yankee fan who didn't while he was playing. I am rooting for him 100%. I hope that he comes back and is just like vintage Andy from the days when he was anchoring rotations always going deep into the postseason. I am so glad that he has decided to give it another shot, because when he retired, I just had this feeling that he had more left in his tank. I'm glad I had a feeling, because this was a nice surprise. So now, we will have to wait and see.

WHY I'M BLEEDING YANKEE BLUE 1 YEAR LATER

Bleeding Yankee Blue has just finished its 1st whole year of covering the team you love the most, the New York Yankees. Casey started BYB in September of 2010, and had a small staff with a few buddies of his. I was the first outside writer Casey selected to write for BYB, and started writing January 2011. My first piece was WHY DOESN'T CASH LIKE SPENDING CASH?
Shortly after, Mikey, Jesse and Grant began writing, and then later on Christy, Lem and Jeana came on board.

The first few months went by slow, with not much traffic coming through our site, but slowly but surely with hard work and effort, we started gaining more and more views and doing something that many blogs don't do... interviews. Interviews with former and current Yankees and Yankee figures like Scott Brosius, Mickey Rivers, David Robertson and Jack Curry. Now, we at over 300,000 views and I am so happy to be part of this wonderful team.

BYB could never be possible without you, the readers who are committed to checking into BYB and seeing what has been going on, voting in our polls, submitting BYB fan of the week pictures, commenting, writing in the BYB Facebook group, and the list goes on and on of how much you mean to us. Nothing that we have accomplished would be possible without our loyal readers. We Love you and always will.

WHY THE MOST VALUABLE PITCHER ROBBED THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

"When I got the phone call, I couldn’t believe it." --Justin Verlander

Guess what Justin... we couldn't believe it either. (Read the story HERE.) In fact, I was outraged! This afternoon, Justin Verlander was named AL MVP. My immediate reaction was WTF?? I never thought in a million years he would win the MVP, after all, he is a pitcher and while it's been done twice before with Dennis Eckersley and Roger Clemens, I just didn't see it. There was a lot of great baseball played this season...by players, not pitchers. Jacoby Ellsbury, Grandy, even Jose Bautista had a good season and MVP worthy. It came as a complete surprise to me that a pitcher won.
Although Verlander had amazing stats that blew away every other pitcher's stats, he is still not deserving of the MVP. he's just not, in fact, as great as it is for him to win the award, it's clear to me that he robbed legit players. In my opinion, Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano or Miguel Cabrera should have taken it home. They completely led their teams to the playoffs and posted incredible numbers. Look, Justin Verlander is our AL MVP now, but I disagree with this decision because pitchers have their own award, the Cy Young and why they are even eligible for the MVP is something I cannot comprehend. Starting pitchers appear in 30 plus games a season... position players usually play anywhere from 140-162 games in a season. I just find awarding Verlander this award is disappointing.

Trust me on this, I'm being mild about this...be sure to check Bleeding Yankee Blue tomorrow morning for Casey's rant. Lord knows how he'll react...ha ha!

WHY THE YANKEES SHOULD EXTEND THE BRIDGE TO MO

In 2011, we felt great about our bullpen with Robertson, Joba, RaSo, and Mariano closing out games. This rotation was eventually toyed around with and it was changed to RaSo, DRob, and Mo because Joba got hurt and was out for the year. With Robertson's breakout year, he is the next Yankee closer after Mo, I have no doubt and deserves the set up role for sure. But with Joba coming back and everyone healthy going into 2012, here's a look at what I think next year's bridge should look like:

5th inning: Phil Hughes, 6th inning: Joba 7th: RaSo 8th: DRob 9th: Mo.

Phil Hughes belongs in the bullpen. I really believe that and Casey has stated it as well. Read WHY I'D MOVE HUGHES TO THE PEN. The Yankees clearly are in limbo about this kid and don't know if he will ever return to his 18 game form of 2010. If he performs well in the bullpen, leave him there. It messes with a pitcher's mind if he keeps being switched from the bullpen to the rotation and back. Pick a spot and stick with it Girardi!

With my proposed bridge, the 2012 Yankees bullpen bridge will be longer than the Bang Na Expressway in China, the longest traffic bridge in the world which is 34 miles long! With such a sturdy bullpen, the Yanks should be worried about 1 more legit starter, and let some of the kids try out for a spot or 2. If Dellin Betances or Manny Banuelos can give us 4 or 5 strong innings every time for the first half of the season, well be in great shape with our huge bridge to close out games. The bridge definitely makes Girardi's job a whole lot easier, not having to worry about how to finish games; just who is starting them. That's how I see it anyway.

CJ, FIELDER & YU... OH MY

We sit here in October, and it is already the off season for the Yankees. That's odd. We are the New York Yankees, known for our October excellence and at the moment we are sitting here watching two decent teams playing in the World Series, a series we should be in.

Did you know that the Yankees have played in 37% of the World Series', and have won exactly 25% of the World Series' ever. Pretty incredible. Now that my venting is done. Let's get to why I'm writing this post.The Bombers sported a great team this year, and with a few good breaks could have been in this year's World Series. Unfortunately we're not. During the regular season, our problem supposedly was pitching, but during the playoffs it was hitting. When we had runners in scoring position, no one could come through! Not Alex Rodriguez, not Mark Teixeira, not Nick Swisher... NO ONE!
That's $59.5 million the Steinbrenner's paid out this year to those players and none of them could come through when we needed it.

Our pitching was so much better than expected with the out of nowhere season Ivan Nova had, plus, Freddy Garcia had his late career re-emergence, and Bartolo Colon's early season excellence provided some stability, for a bit, but in the end, it obviously was not good enough to propel us past the Tigers in the ALDS.

So what happens now? Moves need to be made. My moves are harsh but fair, listen up:

• Nick Swisher: Let him walk or if the Yankees do pick up his option, do what Casey had suggested, make him compete for his outfielder role with a young stallion to prove that no job is safe.

• Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia: Thank then for their service and move on. They helped us out wonderfully in 2011, but it's over.

• Jorge Posada: Keep Jorge. Let him take a mentoring type role sort of like Kurt Warner did with Eli. (Read HERE.) Posada would mentor Jesus Montero.

• CC Sabathia: Re-sign CC if he opts-out, a must.

Now, like I've said before, we need a huge bat. I think although one of the best players ever is Albert Pujols, my feeling is at 32 , he's getting up there in years. We also don't need to spend millions on this guy and give him a lot of years. It doesn't make sense to me. To me, I feel like the Yankees should look into Prince Fielder.
He's only 27 and will be entering his prime next year. Ink him to a long term deal and have him split DH duties with Jesus Montero, and have him split first base duties with Tex. Crazy? Not really, in fact, it makes perfect sense. With the short right field porch in Yankee Stadium, I could see him breaking Maris' record... seriously he's that good.

As for the pitching, we need a lot of help there. The bullpen is awesome though with Joba coming back next year it should look something like Joba (6th), RaSo (7th), DRob (8th), Mariano Rivera (9th). That bridge is longer then the Verrazano.For starters, the Yankees could use 2 elite pitchers for next year to have them make the jump from a great team to a legendary team. Those 2 guys in my mind are CJ Wilson who seems like he will be leaving Texas in my opinion, and the other is Japanese import Yu Darvish.
Darvish is twice as good as Daisuke Matsuaka, and is not anal about routine like Dice-K is. Yes, it's risky,but this kid looks like the real deal out of Japan. This is a high risk, high ceiling type of signing.

With the Yankees not making it to the World Series this year, it is obviously looked at as a failure, and we need to improve immensely. The potential signings of Prince Fielder, CJ Wilson, and Yu Darvish, while expensive, would be huge for the Bombers and propel them into World Series favorites for 2012. Now it's Cashman and Hal's time to play. Go get 'em!
