THE PLAYER'S REBELLION AGAINST ROB MANFRED IN FULL SWING!

I have nothing nice to say about Rob Manfred, and I really would be surprised if any of us have anything nice to say about him. I wouldn't believe it to be honest. I never thought I would say I miss Bud Selig.....but I do. Rob Manfred is absolutely killing the sport that we all love and he's been getting away with it easily but now, the players begin to rebel.

This is only the start and it's going to get even stickier than it already is. Rob Manfred is determined to crackdown on pitchers' use of foreign substances on the baseball only adds fuel to the fire. Pitchers are already angry and it will only make agreeing on a new CBA that expires on December 1st virtually impossible.

I really don't want to think about the possibility of a lockout but....I believe CBA talks were going to go sideways anyway, so this only makes it worse. The players were already frustrated with Manfred unilaterally deciding how to handle last season due to the pandemic so if 2022 Spring Training starts on time it will be a miracle.

MLB headlines Tuesday night were not pretty. The Yankees lost on Tuesday 6-5 to the Royals and umpires checked Gerrit Cole's hat and glove for foreign substances after the third and sixth innings. You can read about it more HERE, but a picture says a thousand words.

And if a picture says a thousand words, videos tell us even more. Nationals ace Max Scherzer also wasn't very happy when he was checked by umpires three times in four innings. Then in a crazier turn of events Phillies manager Joe Girardi gets ejected from the game after he instigates a fight with him.

By the way, after the game Scherzer had a lot to say to the press. The most interesting part of this is he is a member of the MLBPA executive subcommittee which is the highest level of player involvement in the union. Scherzer is going to have a lot more to say in the coming months.

And there's still more! Oakland A's pitcher Sergio Romo was also checked for sticky stuff and he was a little less PG-13 when he removed his belt. It's highly unlikely that he saw Scherzer's reaction so I doubt he was playing copycat here, just in case anyone thinks so.

This circus is what Manfred has created. This isn't baseball at all. The ASSTROS cheated to win a tainted championship and players weren't punished at all, but pitchers who use a foreign substance will face a 10-game suspension. You can't fix stupid.

Manfred has turned baseball into a circus. He's destroyed this game and infuriated fans but now he's pissed off the players to the point of a rebellion. This is only the start, and as tensions rise it will only get worse. Manfred has destroyed baseball and until the owners are financially crippled by MLB's frustrated fanbase we will be stuck with him. So I hope it happens sooner rather than later otherwise baseball is dead.

CONSIDERING TRAVIS WOOD... OR SOMETHING

Photo: MLB.com
Look, in the rumor mill, you really have no idea if a move is gonna be made until it's made.  But damn it's fun to think about players in your team's uniform... am I right?

The Yankees allegedly checked in on lefty pitcher Travis Wood.  After all, the Yankees need arms, or at least that's what I think.

(Chris Sweda / Chicago Tribune)
NJ.com's Brendan Kuty has the story:

"The Yankees may be looking to trim their starting rotation openings from two jobs to one.
The team has "checked in" on free agent lefty Travis Wood, though they don't appear to be the favorites to land him..."

The original story was from Jon Heyman. Anyway, two things stuck out to me in Kuty's piece:

"Wood, 30, had a solid year for the Cubs in 2016 ... in relief. He posted a 2.77 ERA in 61 innings over 77 games, though his strikeout rate (6.9 K/9) was way down from his career high (10.5 K/9) from 2015...

(Armando L. Sanchez, Chicago Tribune)
Wood is a flyball pitcher who doesn't throw hard. Yes, he's a lefty, and that helps. But the Yankees tend to gravitate hard throwers with strikeout or groundout tendencies."

Photo: Getty Images
That falls in line with the Yankees maybe not bringing in Wood.  What they could really use is a starter, and so why bring in a reliever to make a starter when we could easily use Luis Cessa or Chad Green and figure it out with them... you know what I mean?

Look, if anything, it is interesting, but I gotta tell ya. I just don't see it happening as a starter for Wood in the Bronx.  If Wood can help the Yankees in the pen, just like when they reached out to Sergio Romo before he signed with the Dodgers... I say give that a shot for sure.

Starter though? Nope.

CALL IT A COMEBACK...

(April 8, 2014 - Source: Stephen Dunn/Getty Images North America)
And to expand even further... I would definitely take a flier out on the now non-bearded right hander by the name of Brian Wilson.

(Feb. 27, 2010 - Source: Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images North America)
Brian Wilson is making a comeback as a knuckleball pitcher, and Yahoo Sports Tim Brown tweeted this great shot of Wilson throwing... with no beard and with knuckleballs on his mind.
You gotta love that.  The New York Post writes:

(Sept. 21, 2008 - Source: Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty Images North America)
"Wilson, 34, has been training in Southern California, where he’s trying to reinvent himself as a knuckleball starting pitcher, a pitch he taught himself when he was a 12-year-old.

His comeback may seem like a stretch. Wilson was used exclusively as a reliever during his nine MLB seasons. He’s also endured two Tommy John surgeries on his elbow, which raises more questions about his durability....What makes Wilson’s knuckleball different from others is he’s throwing it from multiple arm angles to manipulate the speed of the pitch. "

(Aug. 11, 2014 - Source: Mike Zarrilli/Getty Images North America)
Now will the dude make it back to the big show? Who knows, but the way I see it, the Yankees are always looking for arms to stack in their pen and if they were to sign the dude to a minor league deal, see what he's got. After all, they recently made a push for Sergio Romo for crying out loud.

My take is...if anything... it's fun.

Will that happen? Nope... but for my selfish purposes and because I'm a fan, I hope they do.

THERE'S A REASON ROMO WOULDN'T COME TO THE BRONX...

It's the beard.  I'm telling you!! He didn't want to shave!

Photo: MLB.com
Look, there are many reasons why Romo ended up signing with the Dodgers and not with the Yankees.  But I believe some of it had to do with keeping that beard nice and thick.  The other is he probably had that feeling of West Coast rivalry running through his bones and wanted to try and stomp the Giants in Dodger Blue and all of that.  Whatever the case, it is true; the Yankees definitely wanted Romo! Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com has the story:

"The Rays, who have a scout at the Caribbean Series, and the Yankees also made a strong push to sign the veteran.

Photo: Getty Images
'For me, not having a team, I just try to focus on myself and get better in certain areas,' Romo said. 'That's the reason why I came out to play [in Mexico] was to show that I'm healthy and I'm OK and I got past certain injuries. And also, that I can get better still. There are ways we can always improve, no matter what level -- so here I have picked up a couple of things and some tricks that I honestly feel can keep me around a little longer.'"

Photo: Scott Strazzante, The Chronicle
The Yankees are not done building their bullpen.  They were thinking "Hey, the guy's on his way back, he's probably not a closer anymore. This guy could help bridge to Aroldis Chapman." But in the end, the Dodgers saw an opportunity, offered him a 1 year, $3 million dollar contract, and who really knows what that strong push was from the Yankees. But if you know Sergio Romo... he was thinking about the razor, and since he was on the West Coast anyway... why not try to be part of a big rivalry and beat the Giants as a Dodger...with a beard! Am I right?

YANKEES EYEING SERGIO ROMO JUST IN CASE...

(Oct. 9, 2016 - Source: Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images North America)
It's been 24 hours since the Yankees have made their offers to both Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen.  Rumor has it the Yankee offer to Chapman is in the range of 5 years and $92 million.  No idea if that's true or not... just putting it out there.  I do know this; Chapman wants 6 years, and so, if that offer is true, maybe that's the Yankees saying "5 years will get you alittle more than $80 million with us!"

Source: Getty Images
Whatever man... I just want a deal with Chapman.

Now, the Yanks are trying to protect themselves just in case Chapman and Jansen dart elsewhere. You all know about David Robertson and them sniffing around Chicago for him.

(July 23, 2016 - Source: Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images North America)
Read THE BACK-UP TO THE BACK-UP CLOSER PLAN for more on that. But now there's another closer whose name being floated.  It's Sergio Romo.

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle just tweeted this about Romo and the Yanks:
Now obviously this is just a precaution in case our top guns don't come to the Bronx, but in the grand scheme of things, if Hal Steinbrenner is serious about strengthening our pen, this isn't a bad back-up to a back-up to a back-up plan.

(Oct. 9, 2016 - Source: Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images North America)
The Score writes of Romo:

"Romo was limited to only 40 games in 2016, but was one of the few bright spots (2.64 ERA) in an otherwise dreadful Giants bullpen that led the league in blown saves."

You gotta wonder if the Yanks pull the trigger on guys like Robertson and Romo quickly if, God forbid, things fall apart with Jansen and / or Chapman.

And so... we continue to wait.

NO... ROMO WON'T BE IN THE BRONX THIS YEAR

Quick note to my readers, just because we posted a piece titled YANKEES ARE "CHATTING IT UP" WITH SERGIO ROMO last week about Sergio Romo and the Yankees "chatting" with him. Note to readers... "chatting" and "signing" are 2 different things.

That became evident today when Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweeted that Romo is very close to re-signed with the San Francisco Giants:
So... not that I was expecting anything to happen with Romo, but I was hoping there was some progress since the initial reports.  Nothing of the sort.  It looks like Romo's going back to San Francisco.

Hey, wasn't Brian Wilson cut by the Dodgers? Maybe we can go after that bearded guy instead?

Carry on...

YANKEE FANS TO COVER JANET JACKSON'S 80's SMASH HIT

Enough is enough. Yankee fans everywhere have had it.  We have done NOTHING as a club! And the question is... WHY NOT?

Andrew Miller was a great pickup. I loved that move. Could not be happier...

but meanwhile, David Robertson and Brandon McCarthy took a hike, we watched pitchers like Rick Porcello and Justin Matherson get snatched up by rival Boston, and we're standing around with our dick in our hand and no aggression or urgency at all? What gives?

Yesterday it was revealed that the Yankees liked Sergio Romo.  Yet, Brian Cashman couldn't confirm that that was happening. In fact, he skirted:

“If it’s the right guy, I have no problem signing a (reliever) to a major league deal... If it’s the right guy; if it fits with everything else we’re also trying to accomplish. We also have a lot of good young arms. It’s just, we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out. We have trade opportunities, so it can come in a lot of different ways whether it’s from within, whether it’s non-roster invite, major league signing from the free agent market, or trade. It’s tough to say right now.”

That statement, while appears important, is not.  It's filler, and to be honest, I've been pretty supportive of the job Cashman has done, but now I'm pretty unhappy.  Moves are happening everywhere... but not in the Bronx.  The Winter Meetings is the time to make deals.  Trust me... I will not be happy if we end up signing a guy like Barry Zito (BARRY ZITO IS IN DEMAND APPARENTLY) because we missed out on everyone else... you know what I mean?

Here's what might happen.  Now that Rick Porcello is gone, most likely the Tigers need to sign Max Scherzer becomes bigger.  They will do whatever it takes to keep him.  The Yankees, no doubt in panic mode, will attempt to sign this big fish in a way to keep Yankeeland from exploding.  But over shooting and offering this guy 7 years and a whole lot of money will only make Yankeeland angrier!

The problem is, the Tigers will go in full force for Scherzer... and the Yanks won't be able to offer just 4... it won't happen.  This uncertainty will surely blow up in Cashman's face and the Tigers will get their pitcher back.

Cashman has not signed a quality starter, starters that are available. This is the same Brian Cashman by the way, that has stated he's doing his best to give us a solid rotation for 2015.

Was not offering David Robertson a contract a good idea? That's debatable. Some like it, some don't, but here's the reality;  We could use an extra reliever now that he's gone, and if we just signed him, well, we'd be in Starting Rotation mode right about now. Instead, we're scrambling for replacement parts. Clearly Cash can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

Was letting McCarthy walk a good idea? Well, for 4 years and $48 million... yes it was.  I like McCarthy, but not at that tune.

Was letting Shane Greene get traded away for Didi Gregorius a bad move? Well... before all hell broke loose at the Winter Meetings, I was OK with it.  Now... now that DRob's gone... now that Brandon McCarthy's gone... I'd say letting Greene get traded away truly sucks.

Brian Cashman appears to be that cashier at Target that can't handle the long lines and discounted prices and chaos all around him during the Christmas crush. It's too much for him, but it's his job!  As the General Manager of the New York Yankees, we, the crowds surrounding him want to see action!  Yes, Yankee fans are selfish and greedy and there's a reason for that.  WE'RE THE NEW YORK YANKEES.

We have a tradition of winning and getting the best players.  We spend hundreds of dollars to go to a single game with our family and to be perfectly honest with you, I don't want to go to a Yankee game knowing that our franchise player we have is Brett Gardner.  No disrespect to Brett Gardner... BUT... BRETT GARDNER?????

So, to you Brian Cashman. To you Hal Steinbrenner, guys I've defended... but I'm losing my patience right now...

"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY?"  What have you done for us fans this week? WHAT?

Fix it, we're fed up.

YANKEES ARE "CHATTING IT UP" WITH SERGIO ROMO

Not much to this, but something interesting.  Apparently the Yankees are in search for a closer. Weird, right?

Reports are the Yankees are looking into possibly wanting to sign Sergio Romo.  The terrorist looking closer of the San Francisco Giants could be a perfect fit for the Yankees, but he'd have to shave, which will probably be a big deal for him... but everyone should start a new chapter at some point in their lives. A new chapter beats becoming complacent, right?
The Red Sox and Dodgers are interested as well, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.  Doesn't surprise me. Look, if you're going by hair restriction and beards and people that love their beards alone... it makes sense for Romo to be lazy and NOT want to shave and stick with a team other than the Yankees.

That's right... while the rumor may be true, my post is about hair and hygeine.  That's what we give you here at BYB... a different angle.

Get over yourself... it's just baseball.

We'll keep you posted on this. It is funny however that the Yankees are looked for a closer after they just let David Robertson walk away. And that guy didn't even have to shave. Just saying.

Oh well...

COULD THE HOUSTON ASTROS SIGN DAVID ROBERTSON?

Ken Davidoff of the New York Post wrote this about David Robertson and recent communications with the Houston Astros.  I found it very interesting:

"The Astros have communicated with Robertson’s agent Scott Leventhal to express their interest in the Yankees’ closer, an industry source said.

MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart reported on Nov. 13, on Twitter, that the Astros were 'going hard' to get a top closer on the market, and McTaggart identified Robertson, Andrew Miller (most recently of Baltimore) and San Francisco’s Sergio Romo by name, though only Robertson ended the 2014 season as a closer.

Whether the Astros are willing to go hard enough to give Robertson the four-year contract he desires, for roughly $13 million per season, is unclear."

This is now the second team to be rumored to "go hard" for a top closer.  The first time we heard this was with the New York Mets and DRob a few weeks ago.  You read it here on BYB first.  Read SOURCE: METS WANT DROB FOR LEADERSHIP & "TOP" CLOSER. That's when we wrote:
"A source that I am friendly with was chatting with someone "familiar" with the internal chatter inside Mets camp, and it was suggested that there is concern about the closer situation in Mets-land.  With that, there were "serious discussions" about making a "hard push" to bring David Robertson to Queens.

The idea is to get him over there on a 4 year deal and tout him as one of the Mets “leaders”. Something, this person suggested, the Mets "currently lack." That's not to take away from David Wright by the way. Don't worry, I asked about that.  Anyway, the plan would be to set up with Jenrry Mejia, and close with DRob.  While the Mets liked Mejia as their closer,  they aren't truly convinced he's a closer yet. "
As you know... we've seen nothing yet, but there's plenty more winter to go. Stay tuned.

AROUND MLB RIGHT NOW

Some nuggets around Major League Baseball right now you should be aware of:

Nate McLouth has been turning heads in Baltimore lately. He has a stunning .522 average over the last 7 days and has reached base 22 times in his last 36 plate appearances. He is also tied for second in the league in stolen bases with 8.

Mat Latos reported tightness in his right hip on Monday's start, cited as the reason he left the game. Latos is proving key to the Reds, with two wins, 37 Ks and a sparkling 1.83 ERA.

Carlos Gomez is boasting a slash line of .360/.415/.616 with Milwaukee these days. The rangy center fielder has 5 homers and 12 RBI this season, making some think he is making a move towards elite status.

Matt Cain has yet to find his footing in San Francisco this season. No wins, and an eye popping 6.49 ERA hang like an albatross on the starting pitcher. Still, it's a good bet that Cain will shake these troubles off and settle down.

Josh Hamilton is unable to hit home runs unless he plays the Astros this season. No word on whether or not those terrible stripey vintage jerseys are the key. Seriously, what is going on with this guy? He went 0-8 with a sac fly Monday and now has an average of only .202. Unsettling.

The best closer in the league is... Jason Grilli? The Pittsburgh reliever is in a four way tie for most saves in the league with 10. He shares this with Jim Johnson, Sergio Romo, and our own Mariano Rivera. But he has more strikeouts (17) than any of them, and his 0.82 ERA is only worse than Johnson's inhuman 0.64 by a microscopic sliver.

Slade Heathcott is in the news too.  We want to give Bronx Baseball Daily a shout out for their interview with Slade. Read that HERE.  Good work!

If you like this... we'll bring more to you over the season. Let us know.

WHO WILL SIGN THE BEARD?

According to CBSSports.com guy Scott Miller, there are 5 teams that Brian Wilson can choose from, there is plenty of interest in the guy. That list was cut down from 10 teams by Wilson himself... read Miller's Tweet HERE.  Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle (HERE) believes that the Giants could definitely have Brian Wilson back, but one thing is clear and he writes it in to the first part of his piece saying: "You get the feeling the Giants would love to have Brian Wilson back, as long as he understands something: Spring training begins with Sergio Romo as the closer."

You have to assume the Yankees would NOT be involved in any part of this as they already have plenty ideas to bridge to Mariano Rivera as well as a second closer in guys like Joba Chamberlain and David Aardsma. That being said, we here at BYB have always appreciated the talent Wilson has, as well as the antics... and... beard.  Read I'D LOVE TO SEE THE BEARD IN THE BRONX.  One thing wrong with that statement...the beard would come off in the Bronx.  One main reason I am sure in Brian Wilson's eyes why he would never set foot in the Bronx.

Stay tuned... I'm eager to find out where he's go.
