I WAS WRONG ABOUT JOHAN SANTANA

There's nothing better than wanting to succeed.  There's nothing better than pushing and trying to get back to form and trying and wanting to contribute to a team and then doing it.

It's another to keep trying and falling... not because your heart's not in it, but because you're not physically able.  It's unfortunate, but that's what has happened to Johan Santana.

According to CBSSports.com, Johan Santana had a setback.

"According to the Venezuelan Winter League’s official website, the former two-time Cy Young Award winner’s latest comeback attempt has been derailed by left shoulder discomfort.

An MRI showed no structural damage, but Santana will likely be sidelined a while, hurting his chances to go to spring training with a team."

Look, you gotta give Johan credit for trying.  I appreciate it.  You gotta wonder if he'll try again once he gets passed this setback.  We shall see...

In the meantime... all my talk about trying to get this veteran cheap was wrong advice, at least for now.  I was wrong... and that's OK. Fans don't know everything... we're just fans.

BYB HOT STOVE: VOLUME XI

Here we are again; another week in the pre-season hunt for pitching and, another starting pitcher is again out of our reach.  Max Scherzer is headed off to DC for many years in a deal that smells a lot like a Mets Bobby Bonilla contract.  "The deal is for $210 million with half deferred, according to multiple reports. Scherzer reportedly will receive $15 million annually for 14 years. The deal also includes a record $50 million signing bonus, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press."  Yikes... check out Bonilla's contract. According to the website Celebrity Worth, "Bobby Bonilla hasn't swung a baseball bat professionally in over a decade, yet every year on July 1st The Mets cut him a check for $1.2 million. That's more than any current Mets outfielder will make in 2013."  How?  Well, here is how it happened.

According to CBSSports, "The deal was signed by the Marlins in 1996, but Bonilla was traded to the Dodgers in the 1998 blockbuster that involved Gary Sheffield and Mike Piazza. Bonilla was later flipped to the Mets. He then only played 60 games in 1999, hitting .160/.277/.303, so the Mets saw fit to get rid of him before the 2000 season instead of paying him $5.9 million that year. And now they'll be paying him a bit more than four times that -- just stretched out over 25 years."  Bonilla gets paid $1.2 million dollars through 2035 for doing absolutely nothing.  We don't need contracts like that, making lofty deals to pitchers who will be well into their twilight years or gone from the sport entirely.  Scherzer will be 44 at this point before the Nationals are done paying him on this contract.

I bring this up, because although we all thought we wanted Scherzer, we did not want that inflated contract.  Good luck with that, Washington.

"A source had earlier told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that the Nationals wouldn't have the financial flexibility to sign the right-handed Scherzer unless they have a trade in place to move starter Jordan Zimmermann and possibly shortstop Ian Desmond. As of Saturday, the source told Stark, the Nationals did not have trades in place for Zimmermann or Desmond," reported ESPN.com.  So, who might be interested in these guys?  I know, I would!  There is also talk that the Nationals could trade Stephen Strasburg or Doug Fister.  I'm open but again, we are not going to spend big dollars on these guys.

And Stark also reminds fans that the Yankees, although a team never to be ruled out of any deal including a deal with James Shields, have a clear focus and purposeful message.  "They've been all about getting younger and loading up on bullpen depth. And Shields would contribute to neither. Not to mention that his career ERA in the new Yankee Stadium is 6.35."  Nope, not interested.  

Interestingly enough, in this market of free agency and gluttony, as long as general managers keep feeding the beast, they will keep demanding the big money.  According to Stark, "I can't imagine he gets less than $80 million over four [years]," said one exec. "There's someone out there. You know that. I just have no idea who that is." Lots of teams have had interest in the Shields, but no one has stepped up officially.  Many say it could be any day.  

To end this week's Hot Stove, a word about Johan Santana.  According to Jon Heyman's Twitter feed, the Yankee, Padres, Blue Jays and about six other teams have shown interest in Santana.  Santana is currently 35-years-old and some say he could be a bull pen asset.  I don't know.  It is just too risky.  But, it could happen, so brace yourself.

What?

Look... Bleeding Yankee Blue prides itself on being different.  So when Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com says that a half dozen teams are looking seriously at Johan Santana, I think of a half dozen eggs.  Visually, you are drawn to it, and then you click and hopefully read about it...

Unless you don't like eggs... or unless you don't think I'm funny.

YANKEES HAVE JOHAN SANTANA IN THEIR SITES

Nothing wrong with the Yankees looking to try and sign a guy like Johan Santana, especially if he comes cheap. Especially if he can produce.

I know what you're thinking. We already have washed up Mets guy Carlos Beltran. Why do we need another former washed up Met?

 Well, it's about productivity and getting Santana on the cheap... and that's what I like. Plus, he's a lefty.

According to the New York Post, there has been interest from the Yankees:

"Johan Santana’s comeback began Tuesday night, pitching two scoreless innings in the Venezuelan Winter League, and the Yankees were among the teams in attendance...

 ...the Yankees remain intrigued by the possibility of bringing in Santana and will “keep an eye on him,” according to a source."

Taking chances on guys is part of baseball.  There is no crystal ball in a players career. The best thing we can do, if we are REALLY INTERESTED, is make a reasonable offer that won't break the bank. Then, if things don't work out, we can cut him loose and it's a roll of the dice that didn't turn up snake eyes... or something.

No idea if the Yanks are truly going to make a run at Johan Santana, but I believe in second chances.  I know someone else who did too. His name was George Steinbrenner and last time he did it with guys like Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, they became Yankees for life... and the years with the Mets were a distant memory... that's all I'm saying...

THE MINAYA HORROR SHOW

It’s October, which means if you’re team isn’t in the playoffs, it’s making big moves off the field. After a disappointing 2014 campaign which saw the Yanks end 12 games back of the Baltimore Orioles, a big move is certainly needed to get the mojo back in the Bronx.

Though many BYB fans would have loved to have seen the door hit Cashman on the way out, one name seems to be circulating to help with their scouting in Latin America... and he isn't actually the extra help we we looking for.  He could be described an actual downgrade. That name is Omar Minaya. If you aren’t familiar, Minaya was the GM of the Mets from 2004 to 2010.

His tenure with the club was a mixed bag—though Minaya was given ample cash to sign big talent like Pedro Martinez, Johan Santana, and Carlos Beltran to the Mets roster, he also was criticized for depleting the Mets farm system and had some notable busts—as in the case of the $66 million outfielder Jason Bay, who left the lineup in his first season after a getting a concussion and never returned.

The most important metric though, is winning when it counts and bringing home the championship. And that is something the Mets were unable to accomplish under Minaya. After taking the team to within one game of the World Series in 2006, the Mets blew late season leads in the NL East and missed the playoffs in the years following their NLCS appearance.

Catcher Paul LoDuca, who played for the Mets in 2006 and 2007, did not have kind words to say about Minaya in a recent radio interview on WFAN stating, “The guy was an idiot. And he ended up making the franchise go backwards. Where the Mets have always made the mistake is they’ve always settled for mediocrity.”

After this season, one thing is clear—the Yankees do not need to be striving for mediocrity or moving backwards. Minaya’s reign at the Mets may not have been as awful as some make it out to be, but that doesn’t make him a fit for any solid position with the Yankees... scouting in Latin America included. The Yanks need proven winners, and the former Met just doesn’t seem to fit the bill.

GUESS WHAT HAPPENED TO JOHAN SANTANA?

News broke earlier today about Johan Santana, who's trying to make a comeback.

The tweet about him signing with the Orioles comes from Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com:

Hey look, good for Johan. I mean, the guy is trying to get back, even though when he was showcased in front of teams last week, he could pitch much better than 80 mph on the clock.  Look, there is always a chance the guy builds some arm strength, velocity, but I would speculate that he may not be a starter much longer, unless he perfects the knuckler.

Whatever the case, you tip your cap.... it's an A for effort and you gotta wish the guy well.  I'm kind of relieved the Yanks didn't take a chance on him though...

SNIFFING 'ROUND THE HYDRANT OF JOHAN SANTANA!

They are creeping around Johan Santana.  That's right, kicking tires or sniffing around the hydrant... Yup. That's what the Yankees are doing.  That's if you believe the report put out by Andy McCullough of the Star Ledger who writes:

"The Yankees are one of several teams monitoring the progress of former Mets ace Johan Santana, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. The person requested anonymity in order to speak freely about the situation. After missing all of 2013, Santana is still rehabilitating from his second anterior capsule surgery and has yet to pitch off a mound this winter. Santana could audition for scouts near his home in Fort Myers, Fla. before spring training.

A message left for general manager Brian Cashman went unreturned. He likely has more pressing matters to handle."

Those pressing matters are Masahiro Tanaka and making sure he doesn't slip our grasp.  The other thing to understand is, and this is my opinion... not too many pitchers are going to move until the Masahiro Tanaka sweepstakes is won, meaning negotiating rights.  So while the Yanks are "sniffing"... that's all their doing.

CHECKING IN ON MANNY BANUELOS

I have always been a fan of Manny Banuelos.  I believed, much like many of our writers here at Bleeding Yankee Blue, that he could be an important piece to the future of the New York Yankees pitching.  He, and Ty Hensley of course.  We wrote about Manny a long, long time ago in: FEATURE: ATTACK OF THE KILLER B'S. Febuary 2011 we wrote that.  It seems like a million years ago.

As many of you know, Manny underwent Tommy John Surgery and was out for the entire 2013 season.  Many forgot about him.  Me, being a lover of the southpaw, didn't.  And neither did Chad Jennings of LoHud, who, in October, wrote this about Banuelos:

"After having Tommy John surgery last year, Manny Banuelos did not pitch in an actual game this season. He did, however, pitch at the minor league complex and in instructional league.... he was reaching 92-94 mph with a good changeup and getting breaking balls over the plate. He is expected to be ready this spring, but he will not pitch at all this winter..."

In Joel Sherman's New York Post piece from December 28th, he writes, "... whether the Yankees sign Tanaka or not — there will be so much intrigue come spring training surrounding Banuelos... "

He also wrote that Cashman said of Manny: "...Banuelos is coming back from Tommy John surgery that is not considered as serious, but he hasn’t even finished his development program."

Sherman also wrote: "Banuelos, 23 in March, once drew comparisons to Johan Santana. But questions remain about his control and durability. Brackman is gone, Betances has been put in the bullpen and so Banuelos is the last chance for the Killer Bs."

All is interesting and I'm hoping that Manny does great things and surprises alot of people.  I also hope the Yankees aren't babying him like the did guys like Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain, both are now out of the Bronx.

YANKEELAND REJOICES. YANKS BEAT METS EASILY

It wasn't much of a contest.  Johan Santana who just pitched a no hitter in his last start didn't have the same luck this time giving up 6 runs on 7 hits in just 5 innings.  The Yankees struck early last night and didn't look back and now they lead the Subway Series 1 game to zip against the New York Mets.  I'll take that...I'll take that all day long.

Robinson Cano was one of the big stars last night jacking out 2 home runs and collecting 4 RBI's on the night.  Yankeeland was also happy to see Nick Swisher crank 1 as well as Andruw Jones.  Overall, 9 runs by the Yankees. 

Hiroki Kuroda was the other star and pitched great again which is nice to see.  He went 7 innings, allowed only 1 hit and no runs.  He left in the 7th because he got a bruised foot, but X-rays came back negative.  He could have probably went the full game if he wasn't hit on the foot.  But as John Sterling would say to Suzyn Waldman... "That's baseball Suzyn, you never can predict it." After Kuroda, Cody Eppley pitched great and then was the debut of Ryota Igarashi.

Igarashi wasn't outstanding in his inning, but he also wasn't terrible either. He allowed the lone Mets run of the game although he did strikeout 2 and walk 2. His ERA ballooned to 22.50.

Alex Rodriguez was 1 for 2. He scored 2 runs and walked once, but again...he struck out 1 time.  The K bug is killing me. Why does this guy strike out nearly every single game.  That's a clear indication to me that all this stuff is in his head.  He's thinking too much.  Read ALEX THE LOST BOY for more incite.

Final Score tonight: Yankees 9 - Mets 1.

JOHAN SANTANA THROWS FIRST NO-NO IN METS HISTORY

Congratulations to Mets starter Johan Santana who became the first Mets pitcher tonight to ever throw a no hitter as the Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-0.  Santana threw 134 pitches, walking five and, of course, surrendered 0 hits. Also, this was Carlos Beltran's first game back in Citi Field as a Cardinal so I'm sure this no-no is that much sweeter for Met fans.

JETER'S CLIMBING THE HIT LIST: Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger is the guy who finally had the nugget I was looking for.  Many knew that Dave Winfield was Jeter's idol growing up, but not many talked about it right around the time Jeet hit his 3111th hit to pass Winfield for sole possession of 18th place on the all time Hits list.  

Carig writes: "Derek Jeter used to keep a poster of Dave Winfield on his wall. Growing up, Jeter viewed the former Yankees star as his idol... In the Yankees’ 6-2 victory against the Red Sox, Jeter singled in the second inning, moving him past Winfield for sole possession of 18th place with career-hit No. 3,111. Padres legend Tony Gwynn is next on the list with 3,141 hits." Read Carig HERE. Keep going Jeet, we love ya!

SHOULDER SURGERY FOR MOSELEY: Remember Dustin Moseley? He was with the Yankees for a few minutes.  Well, he ended up playing for the Padres and now it appears that he has shoulder damage and has opted for surgery. He has a right rotator cuff and labrum injury.  MLB.com has the piece HERE.  The surgery will take place on May 2nd according to the article.  Moseley says: "It's not a matter of if I'm going to fix it [through surgery], but who is going to fix it... I'm not in limbo anymore." It appears he's chose New York physician David Altchek, the guy who worked on Johan Santana.

GAMMONS GETS CALLED OUT...FINALLY:  I've never been a fan of Peter Gammons because anyone who clearly has an allegiance for a team and reeks of it as they try to fool the rest of the baseball world that they aren't a fan of say... the Red Sox, needs to step aside, that's not journalism, that's bias and I know where Gammons falls. Finally the Boston Globe has done it! They've outed him. Read HERE. The Globe writes: "During his weekly appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Felger and Massarotti’’ show last Wednesday, Gammons asserted that Globe reporter Bob Hohler should reveal the anonymous sources from his bombshell story last October on the factors contributing to the Red Sox’ historic collapse. Those factors, according to Hohler’s sources, included manager Terry Francona’s personal issues and a fractured clubhouse in which a clique of pitchers were drinking beer and eating chicken during games. It was an absurd suggestion. Betraying the trust of a confidential source would be journalistic suicide." True, but it get's better. They then write of Gammons: "It’s the fan (Gammons) who pleads for last September to be forgotten and for the team to start winning again. A journalist wants to know why the collapse happened, and uses every ethical tactic in his or her reportorial arsenal to find the answer. That’s what Hohler did. If Gammons can’t agree with it, he should at least recognize it." Bravo Boston Globe... Bravo, time for more to call out Gammons.

PUDGE CALLS IT A CAREER: Ivan Rodriguez is set to retire.  Pudge is probably one of the best catchers that I've ever seen, although I have a huge love for Johnny Bench, Yogi Berra, Thurman Munson and Jorge Posada as well.  The Sports Network and Miami Herald write: "Rodriguez is the all-time major league leader with 2,427 games caught and set a record with 13 Gold Glove awards. He had a career average of .296 with 311 home runs and 1,332 runs batted in over 2,543 games." Read HERE.  Don't forget, Rodriguez was part of the Yankees very briefly in 2008. That's why we're mentioning him in Bleeding Yankee Blue's 3rd addition of the Newsstand.

2012 BYB NATIONAL LEAGUE PREDICTIONS

In case you missed it, check out 2012 BYB AMERICAN LEAGUE PREDICTIONS. Here’s part two of our predictions, enjoy.

NL East:

1. Phillies: Best 1-2-3 rotation punch in baseball, need to tread water with Chase Utley and Ryan Howard out, Jonathan Papelbon slight upgrade over Ryan Madson. X-factor: Jimmy Rollins; needs to prove that he has enough in the tank and can stay healthy.

2. Nationals: Fantastic young rotation headlined by Stephen Strasburg, Ryan Zimmerman needs to stay healthy for Washington to snag a wild card spot. X-factor: Jayson Werth; had a sub-par first year of mega contract, needs to step up big time.(In Photo: Jose Reyes)
3. Marlins: Health of Jose Reyes and Josh Johnson are vital, Giancarlo Stanton is one of the best young hitters in the game, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell additions are huge to pitching staff. X-Factor: Josh Johnson; if he’s healthy he can win a Cy Young, no doubt.

4. Braves: Can easily finish first in stacked NL East, tons of young pitching in rotation and high minors. X-factor: Jason Heyward, had nightmare year last year, needs to go back to 2010 form for Braves to make the playoffs

5. Mets: Offense better than most think, revamped bullpen, not much starting pitching. X-factor: Johan Santana. If he can turn back the clock to 2008 and pitch 120+ innings it’d be huge for this team that is assured to finish in last.

NL Central:

1. Reds: Great 1-2 combo in rotation (Cueto and Latos) and 3-4 combo in lineup (Votto and Phillips), Madson injury won’t hurt too much with Sean Marshall closing out games. X-factor: Bronson Arroyo/Homer Bailey/Mike Leake. One of these guys needs to step up and pitch like a legit number 3 starter.

2. Brewers: Fielder departure will hurt, but Aramis Ramirez signing may help, Yovani Gallardo and Zack Greinke one of best 1-2 rotation combos in the game. X-factor: Corey Hart. Needs to stay healthy and help fill the void of Prince Fielder.

3. Cardinals: Albert Pujols, LaRussa, and Duncan departures critical, Chris Carpenter injury huge as well. X-factor: David Freese; Needs to stay healthy and continue to hit close to what he did in ’11 playoffs.(In Photo: Andrew McCutchen)
4. Pirates: Some good young talent in the lineup led by Andrew McCutchen, Joel Hanrahan elite closer, may have to wait one more year to break streak of consecutive losing seasons. X-Factor: Erik Bedard; would be a nice boost to the team if he can stay healthy for an entire season, could thrive in National League setting.

5. Cubs: The curse of the Billy goat and such will continue another year, Starlin Castro a young, exciting player that will eventually emerge into a star. X-factor: Geovany Soto; has followed every good season in career with a bad one, last year he OBP’d a career low .310 after .398 showing in ’10. Is a big year in the works?

6. Astros: By far the worst team in baseball and it’ll only get worse when they move to AL 2013. X-Factor: Wandy Rodriguez; Needs to pitch well enough to get traded to a contender in late July.

NL West:

1. Diamondbacks: Could be best team in NL with great young pitching and lineup, Justin Upton and Ian Kennedy are MVP and Cy Young candidates, respectively. X-Factor: Trevor Cahill; Needs to prove he can handle pitching in desert after pitching in spacious Oakland.(In Photo: Melky Cabrera)
2. Giants: Buster Posey and Brandon Belt have potential to be one of the better young offensive combos in the NL. Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Madison Bumgarner are second best 1-2-3 rotation combo in the NL. X-factor: Melky Cabrera; Needs to repeat strong ’11 campaign and get on base in top of Giants order.

3. Dodgers: Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp both cornerstones of potential elite team in a few years, Dee Gordon is very young and exciting player, best of luck to Don Mattingly in second season of managing. X-Factor: Chad Billingsley; Needs to take next step and become legit number 2 starter behind Kershaw.

4. Rockies: Troy Tulowitzki is best shortstop in the game, acquired two nice pieces in Ubaldo trade to improve starting rotation in near future, Jamie Moyer comeback is great story. X-Factor: Carlos Gonzalez; Needs to stay healthy and return to 2010 form for Rockies to have a chance at the NL Central.

5. Padres: Fueled by pitching and not much offense, Yonder Alonso could be future star. X-Factor: Edinson Volquez; Needs to pitch somewhat near 2008 form. Maybe change of scenery and friendlier ballpark could do the trick.

Wild Cards: Nationals, Marlins
NLCS: Marlins over Phillies
MVP: Joey Votto
