HANK STEINBRENNER IS DEAD

No one could every figure the guy out. He just seemed like a crotchety dude who thought he knew how to run a baseball team, and he always put his foot in his mouth or was really, really outspoken and that just pissed everyone off.  But the truth of the matter is, you never want to see anyone pass away because everyone has family and so did Hank.

Today is a sad day for the New York Yankees and for the Steinbrenner family. Hank Steinbrenner, one of George's sons and the general partner and co-chairman of the Yankees has died.

The New York Post writes:

"Hank Steinbrenner... died early Tuesday morning due to a lengthy illness at his Clearwater, Fla. residence surrounded by family members. He was 63.

According to a source the cause of death was not COVID-19. Steinbrenner was in his 13th year as general partner and 11th as co-chairperson."

Yahoo Sports writes:

Steinbrenner was known to be outspoken and colorful character when he was involved with the team. Back in 2008 he called Red Sox Nation “a bunch of bull----.” 

"That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans,” he told the New York Times’ Play magazine, via ESPN. 

"Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order." 

That was the fire that was Hank.  God love him.  Today, it was announced that he has passed away. A sad day for Yankeeland.

Rest in peace old friend.

My heart goes out to the New York Yankees and the Steinbrenner family.

New York Daily News has some great quotes about the Yankees and Hank Steinbrenner and his thoughts on their fight to win a championship this year and what will be needed!  Love when Hank speaks to the media!

'I wasn't dis-confident for this year. I've told everybody, 'Look, we're going to do alright this year. We're gonna be even better next year. Maybe by a mile.' As it turns out, we're doing really good this year with a mix of the young players and the veterans who we have now,' said Steinbrenner, the older brother of Hal Steinbrenner, who is the organization’s managing general partner and the more visible Steinbrenner face with regard to ownership. “'I still think it will be even better next year. But that's not to say, ‘You never know.’ I mean even though Houston right now looks like the '27 Yankees or maybe the '65 Dodgers, you never know this year. I'm not saying it couldn't happen this year. It sure as s--- could.'...

'We're greedy. We want to win this year. It'd be great to win the championship this year. Obviously we're (32-22). They're playing great as a team'...

'We'll never (trade away prospects). I didn't want to do that in the '80s. But there was somebody that disagreed with me,' Steinbrenner joked, referring to his father. 'Yeah we lost (Doug) Drabek and (Jose) Rijo and guys like that that I loved. That happens. I've always been against that. We traded a ton of prospects away in the '70s too.'”

Look, it's clear that Hal and family don't let Hank out much, because there is one thing that Hank does that not a lot of the others do... and that's be open and honest.  That's what gets the guy in trouble.  But I love it once in a while... it's refreshing.

I KNOW WHAT THE YANKEES WILL DO BEFORE THEY DO!

I have reached an all new level of epic. I have been given a gift that has no explanation other than it has been given to me in order to help "fix" this franchise. Apparently the baseball gods have chosen me for whatever reason to do the impossible.....see what the final Yankees decision is even before they make it. I can sift through all of the possibilities and just get down to the final answer. I'm Yankee baseball psychic! Okay, maybe not but something did happen that is quite extraordinary.

Okay so I am not psychic and I suppose I can live with that. I'm not trying to pull a Miss Cleo on anyone but I had two major similarities happen the other night....as I was dreaming. Yes, I know it was "only a dream" but in retrospect it was enlightening.

So this season has been a big disappointment for Alex Rodriguez. We officially have the most expensive, ineffective, part time, right handed match up only designated hitter. WHEW that was a lot, but it's true. He is part time at best and the Yankees only care to play him against right handed pitchers. He looks lost at the plate and the Yankees have just lost faith in him altogether. So fast forward to my point....I had the other night and he was in it!

So in this dream, Hal and Hank Steinbrenner make a trip to Yankee stadium and have this long meeting with ARod. They are all sitting at the world's longest rectangular table. In fact, it is so long that they have to yell just to hear each other and it just looks very cold and uncomfortable. In the end, Hal is of course doing all of the talking and there are some screaming matches but at the end of it Hank holds up a copy of ARod's contract and just rips it over his head very dramatically and ARod is escorted out of Yankee stadium, pushed into the parking garage and told to kick rocks.

So a version of this happened on Friday, you can read that HERE. It's a small version obviously because let's face it Hank doesn't really work, he's not that dramatic and ARod wasn't fired. In fact he called the meeting "positive" but how upbeat can that meeting be when he has a .206 BA, 9 home runs and 29 RBI's? So maybe he didn't get fired but the meeting still happened! So maybe the baseball gods are telling me something and to dig deeper. We will see.

But there is one more coincidence I can't forget....my dream told me that Mark Teixeira was going to be dropped in the lineup before it happened this weekend! Let's face it, Porcelain Princess has been ineffective. It would be smart to give other guys who are hitting a chance to move up in the order like Starlin Castro and Didi Gregorius. Tex has also been a part time player this season and he just isn't healthy. Give the healthy guys with better numbers the RBI opportunities.

So in my dream Joe Girardi had to break the news to Tex that he was dropping him all the way down to eight in the order. He was visibly stunned, it definitely hurt his ego but he understood. There was no temper tantrum but the disappointment was written all over his face. Fast forward to what happened this weekend....the Yankees dropped him down to seventh in the order which is the first time since 2012. Maybe the number seven agrees with him though because he found his power again and hit a home run on Sunday. That is he Tex we need to see more of.

So I guess this is where I put myself in check. I am not the first female baseball psychic even though that would be incredibly cool. I guess I should just continue to strike while the iron is hot. Maybe tonight I will dream about the winning Powerball numbers and finally strike it rich...

YANKEES WILL CELEBRATE AROD'S 3000TH HIT

You know, if I had typed that title a year ago, it would have been total click bait. Honestly, if you had asked any Yankee fan if they thought Alex Rodriguez would be honored in any way at Yankee stadium ever, they probably would have laughed at you. To be fair, there are probably some that still think he shouldn't be celebrated in the Bronx, but that is neither here nor there.

The Yankees have announced that they will be celebrating ARod's 3000th hit on September 13th, in an on field pre-game ceremony, before the Yankees face off with the Blue Jays. This is good. It's good for the team, it's good for ARod, and it's good for the fans.

ARod, who was suspended for the 2014 season, has had an incredible comeback season. Despite his current slump, he's  hitting .268 with 24 homers and 63 RBI's as full time DH. Which is probably more than any of us expected. For the 40 year old to come back after a full season off, and hit so well has been phenomenal for him and the team. He's reached 600 homers, becoming one of three to ever reach the milestone, and 3000 hits becoming only the 29th ever to reach the milestone.

Since his 3000th hit, there has been some speculation over whether or not the Yankees would recognize it. ARod battles against the MLB and the Yankees was very public. But all of that has been healed it seems. Starting with ARod making his rounds during the preseason and apologizing to everyone involved for his behavior, to ARod staying out of the media and playing great baseball, it's fair to say that the organization has forgiven him. Hank and Hal Steinbrenner, Brian Cashman, Joe Girardi and even Joe Torre have had nothing but positive things to say about ARod this season.

It seems only appropriate, I suppose. A new chapter for ARod. He's made mistakes and it seems he has learned from them. He is a strong contributor to this team, and fans, for the most part, appreciate him for it.

HOW I ENVISION THAT MEETING BETWEEN AROD & THE YANKEES

The following post is imaginary and contains harsh language.  Reader discretion is advised.

Alex Rodriguez walks into a dim conference room. He's wearing a $5,000 suit. He smirks as he opens his suit jacket.

The room is very smokey.  At the long table sits Brian Cashman with his hand on his forehead. His other hand is clinched to his phone at his ear.  He's whispering into it almost like he's about to make a blockbuster deal, but he's not.

Hal Steinbrenner sits at the far end of the table. He's at the head. There are a stack of newspapers in front of him. He's holding a pen with both hands forward. There's a sparkle that catches his 2009 World Series ring, but it's just for a moment.

To his left is Randy Levine.  He's got a slight bead of sweat dripping from his curly hair. He looks nervous, but then he starts coughing. It's the smoke, coming from Hank Steinbrenner, who's not sitting at the table at all.

His seat is off in the corner, under a small floor lamp.  He's reviewing the horse races and smoking Marlboro Reds.  It reeks.

Alex walks over to Hal...

Alex: Hi sir. Long time no talk.

He's grinning. They shake hands..

Hank barks out: You FUCK!

Hal, as he's shaking Alex's hand, snaps and turns toward Hank...

Hal: Shut it Hank!

Hank looks back down at the paper. After his 'Hellos', Alex walks back to the far end of the table.  The meeting has begun.

Randy: Al, what's this all about? We know what you did. You tried to sue everyone, and now you want to sit down and talk? About what?

Alex: Well, I've disrespected everyone, I've tarnished my legacy, but I still work for the Yankees, sir.  I still believe I can fulfill my obligations.

Hal: That's very noble Alex, but what makes you think we want you to?  We have all been in your cross hairs and you've sued our doctor for crying out loud! 

 He slams his hand on the table...

Hank: Screw him Hal! He's a loser... LOSER!

Hank waves his hand and his cigarette ash now falls slowly to the carpet.  He squashes it with his worn out shoe.

Hal: HANK! You're only here to listen! Keep your mouth shut This is why you're not in meetings!

Hal now glares at Cashman...

Hal: And what do you have to say about this!

Cashman slowly closes his flip phone. He puts it on the table. He looks at Alex, nervously.

Brian: You're a good player Alex, but you crossed the Yankees and you've lost my trust.  You don't do that and now, we have to sit here and talk about what? Home Run records? Money we really don't think you deserve? I mean, this IS about money when it's all said and done.  Where the hell were you last season when we needed you? Oh, that's right, you were serving a suspension for something that you told everyone you didn't do! There were investigations and lawsuits and we struggled as a team last season because you lied and didn't contribute.  We're not happy.

Alex: I know. I know all of it.

Brian: I'm not finished you selfish Son of a Bitch!

Alex puts his hands up... he's silent.

Brian: We want you to come to Spring Training and keep your fucking mouth shut and do your job! THAT'S IT!

Hank: Keep your FUCKING MOUTH Shut!

Hal: Alex, you need to show up, you hit for us, you produce and get us wins, that is now you're only job!  When we want you to play 3rd, you will do it and smile.  If you need to be benched because we want to bat someone else that day...

Randy: Guess what else you're gonna do?! You're gonna sit down and root your team on, chat with the youngsters and demonstrate leadership! That is what you do from this day forward!

Brian: I understand that some of the players on our team like you. You have friendships, despite the bullshit, but do NOT take advantage.  Your job is to come to work and contribute. That's it.

SILENCE.

 All you hear right now is the ticking of a clock that sits on a shelf next to a smokey corner where Hank is sitting.

Alex: OK...  ok.  You're right.  I am a huge asshole.  I'm arrogant, a prick... what did you call me Hank?

Hank: A FUCK!

Alex: OK fine.  You don't approve of me. I blew it, I'm a liar, I'm a cheater and I have destroyed my own reputation and I have made the Yankees look bad.  I have no friends and I've disappointed everyone close to me.  I have ruined my own career.  I know this.

I know this really well.  But here's what I can offer you now.  I apologize. I apologize 100 times over.  From this point forward, I will provide the full athlete to you. I've been working hard.  I've been trying to get back to game shape and I'm almost there.  I will walk out on the field ready to play!  I will do whatever Joe needs.  I understand my role is diminished, but you have to understand that sometimes my ego gets in the way and I say things to the press about third base and... 

Brian: That shit can't happen anymore!

Alex: OK. I'm working on it sir.  I will do my job.  I will get hits and get runs home.  I promise.  I will earn my way back and I hopefully will earn your trust back.

Hal: Alex.  While I appreciate that and I understand the need to sit down with us today, here's the thing... we will accept you wanting to play hard for us again, but we've been burned a lot.  So apologizing won't really help, but I'll accept it.  Now though, you and us, we need to come together and do a job.  My dad had many disagreements with Billy Martin, but he trusted his abilities and kept going back to him.  I believe in your abilities and I think they are still there, and so all I want you to do is produce for us.  Let us get something out of the remainder of your contract, maybe we even win a championship... and then, when the time is right, we say our goodbyes and that's the end of you and us.  The Yankee name has been dragged through the mud by you.  If my father were alive, trust me, bad things would happen.  That's how angry we are in the Steinbrenner house.  Bottom line, you owe us quality appearances at the plate. You owe us a season and I want it back!  Shape up or I'll find a way to void your contract.

Alex: Ok...

Alex now clamps his hands together. He then stands up and turns toward the door.  You still hear that clock tick and as the door opens.  Alex then turns his head toward the table again.  He gives a timid wave...

Alex: Thank you for your time.

Hal nods.

The door shuts.

FADE TO BLACK.

HEY ROBERTSON! I AIN'T MAD AT YA!

It seems like every time the Yankees lose a player during their free agency, fans get all up in arms about it. Usually the reaction is anger, followed by a resounding "good riddance." This is especially true if a player was someone who came up through the farm system.

Some times, I get it. Robinson Cano, for example. I loved Cano as a Yankee. I watched him play in Staten Island years back. I cheered him on, and really enjoyed watching him succeed in the Bronx. And then came free agency, the Mariners, and a 10 year $240 million contract and lots of anger. Believe me, I was one of the fans heart broken and angry over this. This signing was clearly financially driven. I get it, a player wants to get paid their worth, so they sell their talents to the highest bidder. But 10 years and $240 million? It was ridiculous! Clearly a greed driven move. But, this isn't the case for every player.

Last week David Robertson signed with the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees gave him a one year $15.3 million qualifying offer, which he turned down. The Yankees then went on ahead and signed Andrew Miller, and never once looked in Robertson's direction again. They never even gave him an offer. The New York Times reported that Robertson "Wasn't surprised" that the Yankees didn't approach him. "It is a business, and the Yankees had to do what they had to do. Obviously when they signed Miller, I kind of had a feeling they might not approach us as well as we would have liked."

Robertson knew what the outcome would be the moment Miller was signed. With Miller and Dellin Betances, how much need did the Yankees really have for Robertson? So the Yankees didn't approach him. That really is the biggest difference between Robertson and Cano. Cano was offered a beautiful 8 yr deal by the Yankees. But for those 2 years, and a couple of million more, he tucked tail and ran. Robertson never had that opportunity. He was never approached. Hard to call him moving to Chicago money driven when he wasn't even offered a deal by the Yankees.

Robertson has stated that he is excited to play for the White Sox. I get it. They wanted him enough to make him an offer and that is where he plays now. Is he supposed to be sobbing in the corner over the loss of his Yankees pinstripes? He's got a job. Like Robertson said, this is a business and at the end of the day, he's going to perform for the team that made the effort to sign him.

I feel like we always go through this. Just last year I wrote a piece just like this about Curtis Granderson. Then, just like with Robertson now, Granderson said he was excited about playing with the Mets. Back then I wrote "He obviously liked being a Yankee. But as a new member of the team, he had to say something to endear him to a new set of fans." With Granderson, much like with Robertson now, it was a PR move. You can't go into a new season, with a new team stating that you hate them. Fans are passionate. If he plans on making his stay easy for himself, and his family, he's going to do and say whatever it takes to get in the fans good graces.

I understand the frustration from the fans. Really, I get it. But the anger in this case is incredibly misplaced. Robertson's contract of 4 yr/$46 million doesn't say "I ran for the money." It says "I really want to pitch in a game, so I took an offer." You can't lump him into the same category as Cano. The dollar signs don't match. Again, the Yankees didn't make him an offer. How long was he supposed to wait? Until the season started and he was unemployed? The Yankees owed him better. They dropped the ball with Robertson. Like Jeana Bellezza said "Hal and Hank Steinbrenner are the puppet masters." 

I won't begrudge Robertson his success. I hope he has an incredible next few years with the White Sox. I'll be watching him play this year, and cheering him on. Best of luck, DRob! BYB has got your back!

FLATLINERS

In 1990, I saw a movie called Flatliners.  It was a thriller about a bunch of medical students who run an experiment where they bring themselves literally near death, or flat line and over time, things just get bad.

It's funny... that premise sounds like the New York Yankees.  Not the "medical students" part... but the "bringing themselves literally near death, or flat line" part.  Our Yankee club looks horrible.  There is no way around it.  If I hear 1 more announcer say or tweet that that Yankees are "frustrating", I'm going to scream.  We know that already.  Like I've stated here on BYB, enough talking... we need action!

You know what I want? I want the Yankees to let Hank Steinbrenner out of his cage.  I want him to say something honest and offensive about our club and then I want him to follow up with what he says. Right now we need a shock factor.   I want Hank to suggest guys that don't perform should be benched!  I want a shake up and a microscope on the guys that can't get it done! I want all the papers to pick it up and then I want to see those players... NOT PLAY.   Then, I want Hank to put his Marlboro Reds in his blazer pocket, hop into his Cadillac and drive off like a bull in a china shop. Meanwhile, we just standing there watching him drive away, and we're thinking...  "Holy Shit... but he might be right!"

Lost. Sad. Pathetic. Lifeless. Those are all words to describe this Yankee offense. I don't want to hear my Yankees say in the post game that "Cobb was tough tonight", because I don't care. Cobb didn't pitch in the past 10 games against the Yankees, but we still managed to lose some of those too.  I'd rather they say they aren't doing the job and they should have their pay docked.  OR, how about they apologize to us fans?   We are no more than a below average ball club right now. And by the way, I salute the hard work by our pitching... they are not the problem.

Brandon McCarthy pitched well tonight.  Blame the hitting. Blame the lousy offense... they're on notice... they suck.

McCarthy went 6.1 innings, he allowed 7 hits and 4 runs.  Esmil Rogers gave up the 5th run, but the reality is, the Yankees were shut out and they shouldn't have been. Alex Cobb is good, but like I tweeted, he's not iconic or anything:

HAL STEINBRENNER JUST GOT PRO-ACTIVE...

And I guess Hank's out taking a smoke break.

I was happy to see this report in the New York Post today (HERE) about how Hal is having a meeting to discuss the Yankees' farm system,  but I question how an owner, with Steinbrenner blood, could he be so late to the party when all of us fans have been calling out the Yankee brass for not "readying" their minor league system. The same minor league system that for years they have touted as, "one of the best."

According to the Post, "Steinbrenner summoned his baseball people to a Tampa meeting yesterday to discuss something other than the Alex Rodriguez saga.

With questions about the lack of talent in the minor league system ready to help at the big league level, Steinbrenner gathered his department heads.

General manager Brian Cashman attended and the group more than likely included Tampa based minor league head Mark Newman, Damon Oppenheimer, who is in charge of the amateur draft, and Donny Rowland, the director of international scouting."

Look, I have been very critical of the way the Yankees have handled the minor leaguers for a few years now, read MAYBE THE GROOMING OF YOUNG YANKEE TALENT AIN'T WORKING,
where I wrote:

"The Yankees have over-hyped talent since their historic run from 1996 to 2000. We've heard every big name youngster be mentioned as "the next best thing." Then, like clockwork, something happens, be it a trade, or they get hurt and are never the same, or, they just disappear."

I got heat for it, but it almost seems like it's coming to light.  By the way, let me be clear, there are many very talented youngsters on the Yankees farm, but there are several that the Yankees either "baby" or don't give a shot because of over working or not giving them a chance in the pros.  Others are a few years away... it's not a blanket attack, trust me.

Now, when it comes to "babying", that's been well documented with our investigative work when it came to Bill Masse, a former Yankee and former Trenton Thunder manager who blasted Yankee brass for the handling of Phil Hughes, he said, " “We get so ridiculous with this dumb pitch count stuff… Somebody came up with a pitch count thing (like) this is going to decide if a kid’s arm is going to be healthy or not. It’s like predicting the weather sometimes. ‘If he throws 66 pitches, he will be fine, but if he throws 81, he is going to get hurt.’ No one can predict that...The only negative you run into is that he never learns how to pitch when he is tired. He never learns how to pitch when he is a little bit fatigued. I think you run into those problems because he is always fresh."

And that's just pitching, who really knows about the other kids, like Slade Heathcott and Tyler Austin, guys we really want to see right now in pinstripes.  I know you guys agree because you fans have been calling for the kids for a while now. In fact, we have reported the same here on occasion, read LET THE YANKEES KIDS PLAY!

That being said, Bleeding Yankee Blue is fair here, we report on both sides, read YOUNG GUNS III: STRUGGLE OF THE KILLER B's. Bottom line, many young players are signed and then disappear only to either find out that they are hurt, or the Yankees just give up, release or trade them off. 

Put it this way... look at Jesus Montero for example, the guy was supposed to be our "top prospect", yet we traded him.  Now, it just so happens that Montero has his own issues as of late, with the Biogenesis list, read HERE, but the point is, when we have "top" talent, the goal is to groom "top" talent to get them up to the pros.  It's frustrating and disappointing as a fan, but I'm glad Hal Steinbrenner is actually angry about this... I mean, where the hell has the guy been?

Good work to the Post's, George King III and Dan Martin to bringing this all to our attention. And to Hal... get moving man, we have issues with our minor league development. There's a log jam and it's time to keep the line moving and bring our guys up!

TIME FOR HAL & HANK TO READ BYB!

Well, here we sit... just a 1 day away from the All Star game at Citi field in Queens.  Many of us die-hard Yankee fans have been so frustrated by all the injuries the Yankees have had all season... it's a mess, but BYB gets me up to speed daily.

We look at guys like Joe Girardi and his binder and we want to blame Kevin Long too.  Many of us are outraged because of all the so-called "rejects" the Yankees have picked up off the scrap heap... I think of them as re-treads like in the tires.  Many of the DFA's end up signing and wearing Pinstripes within hours of being let go by their former teams.  You can read the BYB archives about any of these guys. Meanwhile, many of the Yankee baseball prospects are near the top of the list... so why are we wasting our time on DFAs?   I, like many, scratch my head and think about what Brian Cashman is thinking by NOT bringing MORE of these prospects and giving them a shot.

I have stated in some of my past Bleeding Yankee blogs that we pay and develop players have for years. My question is, what does that say about our farm system if they don’t bring these guys up and use them? It's time... it really is.

Now, some of you know that I have attended some AZ Fall League games the last 3 years (Read HANGING OUT AT THE ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE), and I've seen some of the best in the Yankee minor league system play. For example;  Mark Montgomery for instance. I've heard some talk about how he could be our next closer. Montgomery should be up!  How about Slade Heathcott?

Slade should be given a shot... he has great ranger and can hit some monster shots.  The bottom line is we can't do any worse than what we have up here now.  Heck, with all the injuries this season, we then end up rushing Derek Jeter back too fast,  and he pulls his quad the first day back Come on! Now, we're all hoping it isn't too serious, but time will tell.

I, and others feel like Hal and Hank Steinbrenner don’t care about the Yankees and us fans and are laughing all the way to the bank. Cashman's hands are tied with the tightening of the wallets, it's clear aid is NOT on the way.

Sure, if the Boss were around, heads would roll, but sadly, he isn't and his sons now run the show. Man, I truly wish Hal and Hank read BYB, because if they did, they'd see what many fans feel. I wonder if it would change anything?  I don’t know, but if we got some kind of response, it would be nice.  Look, rumors are all around us lately, but will we actually do anything to better ourselves as a team? I wonder.  It's crazy, but this current 2013 Yankee team reminds me of the late 1960's teams when we had guys like Clete Boyer, Tom Tresh, Dooley Womack & Fritz Peterson... remember them?

Now, you're reading this thinking, "Oh great, another Yankee fan giving up on his Yankees!" NO WAY! I am not bailing at all!  In fact, if you check the standings, this 2013 Yankees team has won 50 games before the All Star break. This is the 6th year in a row we have done that!  Check the standings, every team but the Blue Jays has won 50 or more games in the AL East. As I type this, we are currently in 4th place, only  6 games out of first in our division. So, once again we remain in the toughest division in baseball.  But, what am I hoping for? I am hoping the boys and Cashman shock us fans and make some beneficial trades before the July 31st deadline. I am hoping we start obtaining quality ball players, or at least get more of the kids up here to contribute! That's what I want. So folks, while it hasn’t been pretty the first half, we are still in the thick of this race, remember that. We just may need alittle extra to put us over.
